I love that you address having an image, because I absolutely cannot take a band's dedication seriously when they walk up on stage with bermuda shorts and high tops. Lemmy was right - an audience doesn't want to pay for a show where the band/ artist looks like they just walked out of the garage, fixing a lawnmower.
@jasonstallworth

I love that analogy (fixing a lawnmower!) Yes, you're right...image is important! I think it also shows that you care about what you're doing and the audience will see that.

I learned this when I was directing short films. I had the same actors for several films and they went from an plumber in one film to a pirate in the next. And way more than I anticipated it came down to their costume and make up. In terms of music. You want the audience to know you are the talent when you walk in or on stage. You don’t want them to wonder why a plumber is taking the stage. They might assume that you’re there to announce that the toilets are out of order :)

Hey there! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Natalia here. I’m on a mission to network with other female musicians and happy to have found you here. ☺️ As a solo acoustic musician, I have been performing live at various venues for close to 20 years now. I find it so exciting that you’re open and ready to share your talents with the world! 🌟 I am all for helping encourage other females to get into the industry because we have shortage of female musicians where I’m from! I know, it’s crazy! 🥹 If you’re open to chatting a bit about some the struggles you’ve been having starting up, I would love to exchange insights! I think that it’s amazing that you’re starting to build the courage to take those steps into performing live and securing bookings!! 💫 🎶🎤🎸☺️ Super informal convo if you’re open to helping answer a few questions for my research. I am so happy to share any helpful tips with you about getting into the industry. 🥰 Do let me know if you’re up to chatting! Thanks darlin! Just so you know I’m human, this is me ☺️🙋🏻‍♀️ www.nataliafaculo.com

My first gig at a bar/restaurant was scary. I even had a bowel movement before performing and had terrible stage fright. Not believing I was good enough was a recurring theme when I played to an audience. Eventually, these negative thoughts faded and I’m now comfortable but could improve on engaging the audience a little.

I'm 69 years old and I played live a few months ago for the first time since my band fizzled out 40 or so years ago. I live in Brazil and my wife and I go to a local bar every Saturday afternoon where they have live music. Friends there knew I played guitar so kept trying to get me to go up and play something during the singers break, I said no a couple of times but decided to practice something during the week, then on the Saturday I nervously got up and with my growly bluesy voice did a full on version of Nina Simones Feeling Good, and man it went down a storm!! The following week I did Wonderful World and Feeling Good again and again roars of approval! Since then I fill in for the guy's break with four or five songs and, honestly. it does get less nerve racking. The singer is also very appreciative because it keeps the buzz of the bar up while he's on his break. Easy songs like those mentioned and Always on my Mind, Can't Help Falling in Love With You and one of my favourites Need Your Love So Bad work well for me, but in Brazil a lot of songs that would go down great in US aren't well known here so my Folsom Prison Blues fell rather flat and for some reason I tried Lionel Ritchie's Hello and totally murdered it so luckily I still had Feeling Good to come to the rescue. Anyway the reason I mention this is that you should follow the good advice in the video and go to an open mic with a couple of songs you've practised all week breathe in deep and do it, you'll never know until you try. I would also suggest you take some supportive friends and or partner with you to the bar to give you some confidence. Good luck.
@roberto3262
@roberto3262 Ай бұрын
@j.blogsblues thanks for that! I was supposed to play at an open mic a few weeks ago. I dragged my mic, amp, and guitar all the way there, being a nervous wreck the whole way. I carried my stuff in only to find out that the event got canceled. I was a panicked mess all day long for nothing 🤣 I live out in a very rural area and there aren't any open mic nights available to play at. So they're hard to find. This weekend is a holiday weekend and I live on a lake. So maybe I'll bring my guitar to a campfire to play at a party. The more everyone drinks, the better I'll sound. So I'll wait till everyone has had a few before I break out the guitar 😆

Another great video, Jason! You are paying forward very valuable information for fledgling musicians! Even experienced ones, such as myself! One thing I need to do is bring extra cables. I’ve had moments where a mic cable connection wasn’t great. Had to wiggle the end of it going into my mic. Or, like you said, don’t buy cheap cables! I have a KZbin demo video (which needs updating, big time) and I provide venue GMs/owners a link to on my Biz Card along with an attachment of my music bio, and sample song list. Thanks again, dude! Keep on truck’in!

Great stuff again man. I use a TC helicon "Play Acoustic" pedal. It processes the vocals and the guitar, it's a great tool. On the subject of portable PA , the other positive is you don't need a monitor. Your advice is great and you put it across really well! Most of my stuff is Scottish Folk but I've strayed over the years into pop and country, it takes a life of its own. Originally in the 70s I was a punk. 😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇦

I'm definitely considering a portable system, and soon! Scottish Folk is such a cool style! But I totally get doing more pop and country...especially if that's what the crowd is used to. But hopefully you're throwing in some Scottish Folk songs here and there!

Love your channel. I've taken a lot of your advice from equipment to technique. Moving from using Guitar Tabs to using something simpler like "Pages" on apple is complete common sense. I found I also only need the lyrics as a back up "to songs I really know". An app like Guitar tab is excellent to learn on but not reliable to use for a performance. the extra info you don't need and the timing of the "new smart scroll" is very unreliable. Your comment about "use Pages for songs you really know" is wisdom in spades. Keep doing what you are doing, cause its working! Thank you

Great videos. Have been taking a lot of notes. I live in a small town and it’s touristy during the summer. I can’t believe how many people give $$ to a solo guitarist who isn’t really all that good (yes, I am making a judgement). Then it dawned on me that they don’t care about improving their craft because they are hauling in over $100 a day for playing a few hours. Then I saw your videos and I was blown away. You are a man who knows his craft. You are always improving and always teaching others. You inspired me to play this summer but instead of collecting a 100 a day for myself, all donations will go to helping people financially in my community. Thank you again.

I appreciate your clear and systematic layout of steps to snagging gigs. A few comments, appreciate your response 1. Open Mics as “auditions” for gigs, especially at the same venue. I’m in a duo and we regularly attend 3/wk a. Time: 2 song/10 minute limit b. In-House Gear: No DI box for instruments or any personal gear, even though most lack the gear capability to present ourselves/sound in the best possible fashion 1. Been accused of not understanding purpose of open mics, no time to cater to each performance, all acts end up sounding the same. 2. Monitor wedges-often way too loud, boomy c. Want originals, not covers 2. Gig Inquires a. Need to be made 6-9 months out b. 90+% go unanswered even with EPK link to website/social media. c. DIY bookings; some success, a venue provides the space, we do the advertising, bring our own gear, money collection 1. Join with 2-3 other acts, split proceeds, usually for exposure/networking, not making money
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 5 ай бұрын
Great questions. I'll start by saying don't overthink this. The open mic limitations really depend on the venue and who's hosting. But if you can use that 10 minutes and just nail one cover song, or even an original, and have someone video that, you now have something to share with other venues to get gigs. Just do your best with what you have or what you're presented with; don't let that hold you back. Because if you can sound great with minimal (or not ideal) gear, you're going to sound even more awesome with your own gear. There's no time limit for gig inquiries. Sure, some will be booked out for several months or even a year. But one tactic you can use is to let them know to call you when a musician calls out sick. That's a great way to get your foot in the door. And yes, you can expect many unanswered emails. You just have to keep gently pushing without getting upset or taking it personal. As far as the non paying venues, that might even be a better place to get video footage to promote to other venues. You've got more freedom.

I was excited to find this presentation and so I grabbed a coffee and settled in to soak this stuff up. What did I come away with? "Go and spend as much as possible at Sweetwater" You are _not_ gonna buy talent A gig is a commitment and a responibility and _anything_ can fail/get lost/get stolen People out-grow equipment, nothing wrong with buying used How about backups? I _always_ have _TWO_ of everything and in fact, my floor-pedal, I have SIX of them. I find it incredible that very few guitarists are aware of the Variax (Line6). The acoustic emulation, straight to the PA sounds at least as good as any acoustic fitted with piezos. And then there are all kinds of other emulations and alternative tunings that are switch-selectable. I happen to be a professional electronics/software engineer who can‘t resist tearing gear apart. Long story short, don‘t be fooled by brand-name horse doo-doo.

Hey Jason, great video. Lot of good tips. I have been playing solo for a few years now. Mostly ‘trop rock’ stuff. Happy hours are my specialty. For gear I really try to keep it as simple as possible. I play a Martin OM28e with 2 Bose S1 Pros. No mixing board required. Good enough for a smallish pub. My pet peev at an open mic night is when players get up….and they haven’t tuned up their guitar yet! Seriously! My other suggestion , at an open mic, only one original song. People like to sing along and have a few drinks, bar managers like to see that. If you play a set of original tunes, you will almost never get hired by that bar. The sad truth is, your band will be judged by the house bar and food sales at the end of the night. Bills need to be paid and you will need to earn your keep. I have seen jazz bands that the musicians had doctorates in music, they were killer. But their audience would just savour a coffee for the entire evening…they went broke. Just my two bits. Cheers Brother!
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 5 ай бұрын
Yeah you're right about open mics. If the intent is to use open mics to get gigs, play the covers that you'd play at a gig. If that's not the intent, you can play all the originals you want. That's the downside to these gigs (what you mentioned about great musicians). I think guitar players can sometimes get caught up playing for other guitar players. At the gigs, the majority of people aren't musicians and most don't care what you can pull off. So there's a fine balance between showing your talent while keeping yourself (and music) relatable. Good stuff!
