Jasper Eclectus Parrot Flight Harness Complete

Jasper finally let me put the flight harness on him completely! This is the result of working with him every day for over a month. Now I just need to tighten it better and get him used to wearing it longer. Please post any questions below!

Ya , I'm trying so hard to train my bird to wear a harness so I can take her out, she really needs to go out she gets very anxious indoors , she loves enrichment

Definitely give that a watch then, when I had to re-train Jasper to wear his harness all the things in that video were what ultimately got him back into it. (And it took 6 months, so patience is key) Good luck!

ok thankyou! I already have it and thankfully it's the right size. I thought I'd ask a solemon islands owner to be shure. I was worried I got the rong size. I thought it looked a little small but the solemon islands are small compared to other eclectus species. jasper is adorable by the way. :)

Wow. He really accepted the harness very well. How many attempts did it take for him to accept the harness on? I can't wait to get my baby & start working with him after we get to know each other & are bonded. Flight training is so important. Thank you.

The first time took about a month I think, but then I stopped completely over the winter (bad idea) -- it then took about 5 months to re-train him. It can be a very frustrating process so it's good to start early and do it at least once a week to maintain.

getting my green cheek conure use to his harness. good progress every time. He puts his head through but after he receives his treat he wants to take it off. (sometimes) he stays for a long time. but better him wanting to do it then nothing at all :P

That's definitely progress! Jasper was the same way. Actually since this video he hasn't let me put it on him again, but he's also started a molt so I think that's why. What worked for me was stuffing his face with treats while quickly slipping a wing through one of the loops. Then when he realized what I had done I gave him a whole almond. Then he learned the next step = bigger treat :D

***** bad news.. As we do our usual routine.. This Morning he pulled away to early and took the harness with him. (freaked him out) Tried later this afternoon and he now avoids it D: Even when he's interested in the treat he wont get near the harness. He even flew off the table. Tried starting from the beginning and still wont go near the harness. I feel lost now. don't know what to do or other method to get him started again. And we were doing so well for two weeks too..

Kimai Firehawk Oh no, sorry to hear that! Jasper had a little incident as well, decided after the harness was on he REALLY wanted out and started to freak. Took a good 10 minutes to get him out of it b/c he wouldn't stay still and just got into a tangled mess. Best to give them a break and start again slowly! Don't force it. I'm in the same boat as you.

The loop has elastic in it but it's very well made

Thank you! I got him from a breeder in Western Canada. I'd suggest getting a carrier to take him outside so he can get used to it. Then you can work on harness training him and see if that'll work!

Hey Emma! I've been working from home since the start of the pandemic so now I never leave him (best ever!). But previously, it could be as long as 10 hours depending on work/commute time. They need lots of toys to keep busy. I'd turn on the TV before leaving for work and set a timer to turn it off at a certain time and leave about an hour or so of quiet time then VPN to my computer to turn music on for him for the rest of the day.

+penny oliva If you google Eclectus weights you'll see some ranges. Jasper is a Solomon Island Eclectus, they're smaller than the Red Sided Eclectuses. Also depends on how big their parents were. Jasper is about 315 grams, he's on the smaller side.

Could anyone give a me tip on caring for an eclectus parrot? I'm thinking on getting one. Any food, playing, talking or anything like that tips? I'm going to live in an apartment so I'll need to take him down to the park often right? + where do you buy harnesses? They'll probably come in handy due to how many people go to that park.

you can buy a harness online, about $60 and above. Make sure you give your parrot lots of vegtebales and fruits. you can buy or make a play gym for her\him as well, just to make them happy.

+Arctic Snowy Kitty AJ Read as much as you can about them! There's an incredible amount of information online/books. They require a special diet, you can't give them pellets. Before you get one make sure you'll be able to handle/want the amount of work that comes with one. It's along commitment, make sure beforehand!

rabidchipmunk2641 They'll end up curving at the end. Jasper isn't flighted though, the harness is just for safety outside but we haven't done that yet.

They're amazing, they're like having a little kid. Jasper is incredibly social, loves to learn, he's a little suck and loves to cuddle as well. They're a LOT of work though!

Male babies are born with black beaks. As they get older it turns into orange/yellow. He's still very young in this video, his beak is changing!

In this video he was almost 1. Some Ekkies beaks turn quite quickly, others can take a few years! His stated turning fairly early but it was a slow process until it was entirely orange & yellow

So they can fly outside safely without flying away from you! But Jasper has a baby clip so he can't fly very far. I'm actually using it like a leash so he doesn't try to get away. Even though he has a baby clip I don't want to risk him flying into traffic, etc.
