Jasper is actually my zodiac's gemstone. Jasper / Casper isn't a popular name in Germany, maybe because a "Kasper" in German is either a clown in your regular puppet play, or a boy from mean-spirited nursery rhymes. Personally, I mostly associate Jasper with the one from 101 Dalmatians.

I'd be curious to see how the gendering of names happens. Sometimes it's kind of obvious like with Latin ending names the same way it does with other nouns and we get Julius and Julia, but who decided that Aino for example would be feminine? Are there names where it's just based on what vibes people picked up from it when it got popular? And how do some names switch genders, like Aubrey? P.S. I don't know why, and I'm sorry to any Imogens reading this, but to me it kinda sounds like the name of a topical analgesic that you squeeze out of a tube.
@erraticonteuse3 жыл бұрын
There's all kinds of discourse about how people find it much easier to accept traditionally masculine names being given to girls than traditionally feminine names being given to boys, and also how once a masculine or unisex name reaches a tipping point of being perceived as even slightly more feminine, its popularity for boys drops like a stone (when's the last time you heard of a male Leslie or Ashley or Courtney?) Suffice to say, the explanation usually put forth for this phenomenon is "sexism" (and I am inclined to agree tbh).
@storyspren3 жыл бұрын
@@erraticonteuse Now that you point it out, I know multiple names that switched from masculine to feminine but I can't think of any that went the other way around. I even tried googling now and only found stuff like "masculine and feminine versions of names" and an article of "baby names for boys that are typically girl names" that gave me hope for a moment, only to find it full of names that used to be seen as masculine, including one the article describes as having gone "from exclusively male to almost exclusively male" which was a bit weird. And seeing as women doing traditionally masculine stuff is less pushed against than men doing traditionally feminine stuff in other areas too, I'm inclined to believe your explanation for these flips.
@robynriana3963 жыл бұрын
@@storyspren An interesting example is Avery, traditionally a male given name, is now becoming a female name in a North America, purely because the “v” sound is popular. There goes one of the few beautiful boy names off to join the girls’ camp! 😅

@@robynriana396 Funnily enough, Avery is actually the same name as Aubrey. Aubrey is the Norman French form and Avery is the Old French form (derived from the Old French pronunciation) of a Germanic compound name that existed in Old English as Ælfric, which is formed from Elf (same as the modern word, also meaning "smart", "crafty") + Rich (same as the modern word, and also meaning "powerful").

It's more likely the name travelled like this: Persian>Greek>Latin>French>English, without the mediation of Hebrew. The profession of treasurer was adopted from the Persians during the Hellenistic era and then the Romans adopted the term when they inherited the Hellenistic kingdoms to the east. In Hebrew the word "gizbar" is still in active use, so that might be the reason why some scholars believe the Hebrew word influenced the Latin language.

In response to your request for mistake names, one of my friends is named Elizabeth. But her mom was horrible at spelling and wrote Elizebeth on the birth certificate. She hates the name anyway, so she goes by Ellie. But I teased her mom about it for a little while after I found out. I even called Ellie "Triple E" for a little while until I came up with other nicknames for her that annoyed her even more. Funny thing is, her mom thought I was calling her Tripoli as in the place in Africa until I explained that it was because she sucks at spelling and gave her daughter a name with three e's.

I don't think that the Dutch name Casper came from English. I think it would be far more likely that it came from Latin. A "G" becoming a "C' is much more understandable than a "J" becoming a "C." In fact, the Roman letter c came from the Phoenician and then the Greek letter is that make the g sound.
