But some of its backwards. Christianity was well documented hundreds of yrs before anything Norse made it to paper. Some suspect Ragnarok being inspired in part by Revelations, not the other way round. Norse myth may have been around at the time of early Christianity or it may have been bits and pieces and then took some of the roman mythology which was just Greek gods with different names. Odin and Zeus (and Christian Yahweh) look kinda similar

Well yes, in the Nordic countries Odin was the one who brought Yul presents originally. There was, and still is, a tradition in Scandinavia for putting an oat bundle in a tree at Yul. Horses like oat, and it would encourage Odin on his flying horse to visit the house, bringing gifts and good luck. Most people in Scandinavia don't know the reason behind the oat bundle tradition, they just put it out, out of tradition, which I find hilarious. 🤣 /Dane

@@killgarraghforever I had heard that Christmas being in December bc of a "pagan" holiday. (It doesn't make sense that Jesus was born in December, the shepherds were out with their sheep, the king wouldn't have ordered everyone to make the long trip to register that Joseph and Mary were on in the middle of winter etc) I've just finished reading about the link between Odin and Santa, I'd never heard about it before. And apparently the winter holiday that involved Odin was Yuletide! ( Interesting that Christmas includes a yule log and you hear the term at Christmas) This guy really knows his gods lol!

@@TH-kd1ju Yeah, I know! Fascinating, isn't it? Christmas as we know it today has its roots in Norse mythology & Yule, but some of the customs come from other celebrations such as Saturnalia, which is Roman.
@samuelmellars7855
@samuelmellars7855 Жыл бұрын
@@TH-kd1ju I will point out that the Nativity is set in what is now Israel, which means the winter would have been cold, but not deadly like it can be in Northern Europe and North America (some spots apparently have snow, but it's not that much) so the shepherds *could* have been out. Maybe not though, you'd expect to herd sheep around when there is less grass and they have to go further for food (i.e.: Summertime) and not the more wet/rainy period. I don't know enough about agricultural/pastoral practices of that time to say though.

If you like that kind of thing look up the Dresden files books. Its about a wizard who works as a private investigator in modern day Chicago. Think sherlock holmes meets buffy the vampire slayer. The later books frequently involve the various higher powers (Queen Mab of fairie, Odin, Uriel, Hades, that sort) in the same room often arguing in this way. They all know each other so there's an eternity of drama. They even reference Odin's part time job as Cringle.

As a norweigan elkhound owner i can say youre correct about the barking. Its very deep, needs to for stopping big game like moose and bear. Also makes a great home alarm as she will bark as anyone approaches the house so if anyone sneaks up I will absolutely know. Also..if youre going to rob a house its pretty unviting to go the one that sounds like its thundering inside.

I had a basset hound and their barks are not as loud as an elkhound but they're very deep. We were wrestling once and my ear was against her throat when she barked. OMG no joke I was deaf for a few minutes, it was like a sonic bomb went off in my head

I thought that the barking wasn't to scare animals away, but so that the hunter could locate the dog and its prey.
@BrimirMe
@BrimirMe 6 ай бұрын
They have different barks, one to calm them down when they are standing still and one to provoke them if they are moving and one to indicate when it's working and the prey chases them. They all alert the hunter about what's going on. Ungulates and predators perceive barking differently, so what is reassuring to a moose might be terrifying to a bear. Bear hunting often involves more chasing, unless it climbs a tree.

Lol - yes Odin is one of the inspirations for Santa. He was supposed to have shown up during blizzards randomly and given toys to good boys and girls. The 8 tiny reindeer are Slepnirs feet. Leaving gifts in stockings and climbing down the chimney are inspired by Bishop Nicolas of Barl who defied the law that only women who could come up with a dowry of the heft amount set by the crown would be allowed to marry by giving money to the girls so that they could get married.

SO ACCURATE about the barking! We had a Norwegian Elk Hound named Max for 11 years. He was big and full of energy, but we lived in a hotter climate so it was tough on him. They really are working dogs and he needed something to do, so he used to move our firewood pile from one end of the yard to the other for no reason. He didn't bark often because my parents trained him well, but when he did, he'd make sure the whole neighborhood heard! Funnily enough, even though his ancestors were trained to hunt big game, he was terrified of lightning! I still miss that sweet, protective, goofy, fluffy energy tank. 🥺🥲❤
