In this aquatic video we take a short jaunt through a Sarracenia Bog and check out a lovely population of Sarracenia leucophylla and the very rare and restricted Morella inodora.
As always Thanks to Lilly Anderson-Messec for her help in production and for being a friend.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds clichéd, but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...

There is a clear creek I go to where I put up a folding chair and sit in the middle of the stream and my butt is just above the water. More iridescent dragonflies of gold and blue and green than I have seen, and I kick off my shoes and minnows come over to play with my toes. I take a count of the bivalves I see and the crayfish. I lived in the Florida panhandle outside of Pensacola for a year. Absolutely beautiful and ecologically unique place. Totally different than south Florida where I grew up. It holds a special place in my heart. What’s cool is near Crestview there’s Eglin Air Force base which owns a few hundred thousand acres of fairly pristine wilderness. For $10 a year you can get a recreation permit to explore the land. Miles and miles of dirt roads, spring fed creeks just like the one you’re in everywhere. A lot of really healthy ecosystems, and in certain places deep in the woods I believe I stumbled upon some old growth forest- at least based on the size of the cedars and diversity of the flora. It was super tough but I finally found all 7 native species of Florida pitcher plants which was a huge nerd goal of mine lol. Plus a few weird hybrids. If you’re ever in that area, get a AFB recreation pass online and hit me up for some pristine spots that not many know about!

Love the Sarracenia footage. S. leukophylla is one of the loveliest species but another nice one in Florida is S. minor and the two species hybridize naturally to form S. x excellens which is arguably more beautiful than the parent species. Not sure how much of the natural mixing habitat is still around down there but maybe eventually you'll stumble across it. ;)

I think Chamaecyparis thyoides only just barely makes it into some of Maines southeastern estuaries where it is super rare. Also, I don’t believe it makes it to any of Canadas Atlantic provinces according to GBIF or USDA. Once you go north of NJ it’s hard to find any substantially large stands of it, and the stands that do exist that far north are seldom far from the ocean. I’ve been to one stand in New Hampshire and I’ve seen some in Long Island as well. I think Cape Cod has quite a few. I was trudging around a cedar swamp this past weekend down in Cape May county NJ and it’s amazing how common the species is, it grows with water Tupelos there as well. You can see swamps all along the Garden State Parkway right from your car.
