Not just poor, she came from the untouchables (dalits). If you don't know anything about that and its very oppressive nature, very interesting subject.... If a dalit lets even their shadow fall on someone from the upper Hindu classes (Brahmin), they can be beaten or even killed. Many cases of it despite this caste system being abolished.
