Prachtig eerbetoon aan Freddy Maertens. Hij was mijn wieleridool uit mijn jeugd. Ik zal nooit vergeten hoe verbaasd en content ik was toen ik in 1981 plots op de radio hoorde dat Freddy de eerste rit van de Tour gewonnen had. Ik was toen 11 jaar. Zulke verhalen maken de wielersport mee groot.

One of my beyond all-time favorites, too. Worked like a dog and then some to be the best and he was off the charts. Best sprinter of all time, period. Period. Pure Nonpariel. Amassed what was it, 56 UCI wins in one season(!), the greatest number of wins by anyone, still.... Unreal. Real nice guy, down to earth. One of the absolute finest ever.

Een betere omkadering, en het had maal 5 geweest qua overwinningen. Wat een klasse, wat een verspilling van één van de grootste talenten aller tijden. De huidige generatie heeft het stukken makkelijker op dat vlak.

It makes me happy that he's finally made it through all of his financial problems and now leads a quiet, happy life with his lovely wife, daughter and grand-daughter. If it wasn't for that fatal fall in the giro, Freddy would have succeeded an even greater score than he allready did!

Om een of andere reden moet ik altijd aan Frank Vandenbroucke denken als ik iets over Freddy Maertens zie. Twee renners met een buitenaards talent maar te weinig karakter om het onderste uit de kan te halen. Maertens heeft gelukkig wel een carriere gehad, bij VDB was het al gedaan voor het goed en wel begonnen was....

@@mathiasvandersonck4369 ik heb de fysieke gelijkenis tussen beide altijd redelijk frappant gevonden. In die mate zelfs dat ik ergens onbewust in het begin bij VDB al dacht, aiai, als dat maar goed afloopt...

Merckx was alone in an attack. Maertens closed the gap alone! It was forbidden to chase a compatriot, unless you could do it on your own, which Freddy did. Afterwards 2 other riders closed the gap. Freddy launched Eddy Merckx for the sprint, but Eddy couldn't hold the wheel and lost the sprint. Afterwards Eddy and the press blamed Freddy for closing the gap. Eddy was/is king of cycling, and young Freddy was an unwanted opponenent.

@uberkloden: name one rider that was not on dope at that era? Freddy was and still is a great person, too sensitive maybe but still, if you see what he went through, one can only pay great respect to one of the greatest cyclists of the seventies.

Zonder pech, ach Maertens was completer dan Merckx, ze konden allebei alles, blessure heeft Maertens veel gekost maar het was de meest propere renner op zo'n niveau !

Good reason why there is drug testing in sport.This guy was so obvious and his teammate michel pollentier who was thrown off 1978 tour. Gut who won 13 stages of 1977 tour of spain just ain't trading on pure strength.shame didn't learn lessons for armstrong era

So you really think they didn't do drug tests in those days huh? You don't seem to know a lot on the subject, do you? Freddy was utterly talented as a racer. He's had some drug issues during the last years of his career, but you obviously didn't understand a word from this documentary. He was just clever as hell misleading everybody. Preparing himself for the tour in 81 (and before that too), he would do a 100-150 kms of training, then participate in some minor race and stepped out of the race, so everyone thought: "he's done for!", but then he rode home and halfway put on his racing gear again and did another long training, so he did about double of what the other racers did.
