Javed Akhtar is an Urdu and Hindi (Hindustani) poet, lyricist and scriptwriter. Known for his work in Hindi cinema, he has won five National Film Awards, and received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007.
Akhtar came to recognition in the duo Salim-Javed, and earned his breakthrough as a screenwriter with 1973's Zanjeer. He went on to write the films Deewaar and Sholay, both released in 1975; they earned a cult following, and had a significant impact in popular culture. He later earned praise for his work as a lyricist, winning the National Film Award for Best Lyrics five times and the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist eight times.

In duo ,Contribution was from both...but when it comes to screenplay department salim g would deal and play an important role...although Salim g himself was ahandsome actor...but once he himself had told that although he knew the craft and he could easily find why where the actors lack and when and how they may look powerful but he himself could not project and convince the audience...so he left the acting..but javed g was very clear that he wanted to be lyricist poet..Salim g dragged him in script and screenplay..actually salim g helped him learn screenplay..and before they parted their ways javed g had expressed that he wanted to switch to write songs with the same duo name duo Salim javed while retaining our screenplay script profession..but Salim.g did not agree as he did not know much about lyrics and there would no much contribution from his side..so they parted their ways..although later he could have averted the decision..they never made their soft bitterness public.. and never made this big issue.

@@daylucky5090 Considering his love for Urdu poetry and his friendship with Late Sahir saab (and respect for the great poet) there's no wonder if he preferred to be a lyricist. But he's great in both. I don't know much about Salim.

@@wizardofb9434 yes right he has been well deserving Poet..and he became famous poet lyricist...only fools can criticize saahir g and javed g..i just told the facts not intend to criticize anyone...i think both salim g javed g are equally sane wise gentle respectful ...all others were also greatest like gulzaar g kaifi aazmi g shailendra g indeevar g nidaa g raahat indori g anand bakshi g known for simple deep Hindi language ..in today's time sayeed qaadri..amitabh bhattarcharya kir kirey g ,..the other two greatest beyond my mind...muntashir and kaamil g prasoon g grover misra g ..my fav are shabir Ahmed and amitabh bhattarcharya.
