Australia at that time (and still is) basically considered the most racist capital of the world. It was still having 'only white policy' and if South Africa had apartheid, Australia had all the germs to be 2x of that at the time. This is the legacy that Australian cricket team still carries which emboldened their boys to get into bully acts in South Africa, England, India and then fines for ball tamperings.
