From Going Solo, the chapter titled "Palestine and Syria" "You seem surprised to find us here," the man said. "I am," I said. "I wasn't expecting to find anyone." "We are everywhere," the man said. "We are all over the country." "Forgive me," I said, "but I don't understand. Who do you mean by we?" "Jewish refugees." "Is this your land?" I asked him. "Not yet," he said. "You mean you are hoping to buy it?" He looked at me in silence for a while. Then he said, "The land is at present owned by a Palestinian farmer but he as given us permission to live here. He has also allowed us some fields so that we can grow our own food." "So where do you go from here?" I asked him. "You and all your orphans?" "We don't go anywhere," he said, smiling through his black beard. "We stay here." "Then you will all become Palestinians," I said. "Or perhaps you are that already." He smiled again, presumably at the naivety of my questions. "No," the man said, "I do not think we will become Palestinians." "Then what will you do?" "You are a young man who is flying airplanes," he said, "and I do not expect you to understand our problems." "What problems?" I asked him. "You have a country to live in and it is called England," he said. "Therefore you have no problems." "No problems!" I cried. "England is fighting for her life all by herself against virtually the whole of Europe! We're even fighting the Vichy French and that's why we're in Palestine right now! Oh, we've got problems all right!" I was getting rather worked up. I resented the fact that this man sitting in his fig grove said that I had no problems when I was getting shot at every day. "I've got problems myself," I said, "in just trying to stay alive." "That is a very small problem," the man said. "Ours is much bigger." I was flabbergasted by what he was saying. He didn't seem to care one bit about the war we were fighting. He appeared to be totally absorbed in something he called "his problem" and I couldn't for the life of me make it out. "Don't you care whether we beat Hitler or not?" I asked him. "Of course I care. It is essential that Hitler be defeated. But that is only a matter of months and years. Historically, it will be a very short battle. Also it happens to be England's battle. It is not mine. My battle is one that has been going on since the time of Christ." "I am not with you at all," I said. I was beginning to wonder whether he was some sort of a nut. He seemed to have a war of his own going on which was quite different to ours. I still have a very clear picture of the inside of that hut and of the bearded man with the bright fiery eyes who kept talking to me in riddles. "We need a homeland," the man was saying. "We need a country of our own. Even the Zulus have Zululand. But we have nothing." "You mean the Jews have no country?" "That's exactly what I mean," he said. "It's time we had one." "But how in the world are you going to get yourselves a country?" I asked him. "They are all occupied. Norway belongs to the Norwegians and Nicaragua belongs to the Nicaraguans. It's the same all over." "We shall see," the man said, sipping his coffee. … "You could have Germany," I said brightly. "When we have beaten Hitler then perhaps England would give you Germany." "We don't want Germany," the man said. "Then which country did you have in mind?" I asked him displaying more ignorance than ever. "If you want something badly enough" he said "and if you need something badly enough, you can always get it."

That was fantastic. I really really enjoyed the series, just watched them all back to back. Fascinating how.much I didn't realise about ww2. I had no idea there were French who fought the allies. R. Dahl was a proper hero too. I'm blown away by how well you put this all together. Bravo mate, hope you do stuff like this for a living as you have a real talent for cinematography and story telling.

Great work! But if you want humans to be present in vehicles and on guns, go to Documents/1C SoftClub/il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover. Open conf.ini, and change SpawnHumans=0 to SpawnHumans=1. By the way, here’s a suggestion for a video; No.3 SQN RAAF’s Tomahawks in combat against Vichy D.520s over Syria. According to Wikipedia, seven No. 3 SQN Tomahawks were escorting No. 45 SQN Blenheims over Syria on July 10th, 1941. They came under attack from five D.520s. Three Blenheims were reportedly lost for the cost of four D.520s, two of which were destroyed by Peter Turnbull. The next day, No. 3 SQN lost a Tomahawk to a D.520, but the French plane was then bought down over Aleppo by Bobby Gibbes and John Jackson, with Jackson ceding full credit to Gibbes after losing a coin toss. Turnbull was killed as a Squadron Leader on August 27th, 1942, while leading No. 76 SQN over Milne Bay. He was credited with destroying 12 enemy aircraft singlehandedly. Gibbes survived the war with the rank of Wing Commander and 10 1/4 victories to his name. He died on April 11th, 2007. A Spitfire Mk.VIII bearing the shark mouth markings of his personal aircraft _Grey Nurse_ is an icon of Australian airshows, and can often be seen alongside a Kittyhawk in the markings of his North African mounts. Jackson lost his life as Squadron Leader while leading No. 75 SQN over Port Moresby on April 28th, 1942. He was possibly fatigued and incensed by an implication of cowardice from his superiors at the time (he refused to engage Zeroes in turning fights). He was officially credited with 8 victories.

Thanks I will consider it. Strange showing humans isn't on by default, thanks though.

Yes the Vichy French, it was part of France that decided to collaborate with the Nazis after France was defeated in 1940.
@dpeasehead2 жыл бұрын
@rubadubdub: Nazi beliefs in things such as anti semitism and white supremacy weren't limited to Germans or to Vichy French. European colonialism was very much alive and well, and would be for many decades to come.

There have been many movies about WW2 air conflict, and the 'good old spitfire" gets the credit and the glory. But this whole series would make a great movie or perhaps a mini TV series might be better. It shows how effective the Hurricane was in combat and how well built it was to be able to bring its young pilots home even after serious damage. They would just require the right stuff young actor ( not an well known American playing a younger Brit) and no stupid side stories of "romance that didn't take place in the 1940s" or certain ethnic people there for diversity.
@Idcanymore5102 жыл бұрын
Well, certain 'ethnic people' were actually serving there and elsewhere, fighting and dying. My uncle being one of them. Although you may not like that inclusion, because it doesn't fit your limited view of the conflict, it is nevertheless a fact of the war that has been shamefully written out of history.

These are generally really well done, no doubt in large part due to the excellent writing of Roald Dahl. But he explicitly says they were taken back to Britain on the French liner Ile De France. That is so poorly represented by the small steamer you used as to be laughable.

Those video series was great to watch. Too bad that this game does not give it justice. Although it has great graphics, it is far inferior to the IL-2 1946 in my opinion in all the other aspects....

A good effort but... Please, not jew88's please, that is so very ameteur. Many Jews and J U crews would be offended. No veteran I spoke to ever called those aircraft jew88's. Ju is an abbreviation for Junckers (pronounce Yung-kers) as I hope you know. People then referred to J.U. 88's.
