While that story may or may not be true, it is a fact that Eddie asked Alice Cooper to ask his friend Glen Campbell to give him guitar lessons and then asked Glen to hook him up with Roy for more lessons. (See Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me 2014 movie. Alice tells the story) Keep it in mind that Van Halen was already a big band when he made this request.

Between Roy Clark, Jerry Reed and Glen Campbell some of the greatest guitar playing in history took place and those of us that grew up in the 60s and 70s saw it first hand. Rock guitarists have always been always obsessed with the quickness of the fret hand. Roy said, "Oh, yeah? Watch my other hand, little children."
@allialias
@allialias 13 күн бұрын
Is it too weird to you too the reaction of Shock unto incredulous unacceptance of the children when they witness unsmug, honest talent? The absolute disbelief they display, followed by side-eye and head shaking is absurd. Yes, the man actually played the instrument as designed, without electronic assistance, witchcraft or an abundance of animated limbs. Perhaps they seek to reinforce their unbelief in "God given Talent". Denying Divinity is paramount to some, and Godly Talent manifests here 🤔.

In the world of "Greatest Guitarists," you will be hard pressed to find anyone better than Roy Clark. It's not just his skill. It's his versatility, in style and instruments. Some of my favorite stuff of his was swing, he had such spectacular rhythm, which you see in abundance in this video. It just doesn't get much better than this guy. He's SO good, it's almost unfair to compare others to him. One of the younger generation artists who MIGHT be good enough to be in the conversation with Roy is Polish guitarist Marcin Patrzałek. His fignerstyling and percussive techniques are right in the vein of Clark's style. I'm glad you guys know of Clark and listen to him. He's of an old enough generation that he's almost a forgotten talent. The more you young fans keep his name alive, the better for everyone.👍👍

So much attention and praise is usually given to a guitarist's fingering hand on the fretboard. But Roy's skill is equally elevated with both. His right hand is c r a z y fast and precise. First of all, the TV cast was Tony Randell and Jack Klugman. Matthau and Lemon were in the movie. Tony Randell had seen Roy live in concert and fell in love with his playing. He lobbied hard to get him on the show, so that move Tony made at the end was real and spontaneous. Roy said once that if an instrument had a neck and strings he could play it. Roy played in Russia and somebody handed him a Balaika. He walked around the stage finding the tuning and and how to make it fit. He then played it during his next song and the Russian crowd went nuts. Violin, Mandolin, Banjo or Guitar if it has strings odds are he can play it.

I too, list my influences in the rock genre, (Page, SRV, Clapton, Gilmour) but you see, I also grew up in the 70s with 3 channels to choose from on tv. Hee Haw (and the odd couple) were on every week in our house. Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins (Mr. Guitar) are high on my list too. I am pretty sure every guitarist on record (popular) since Son House and Robert Johnson have wormed their way into my consciousness, and affect my playing. Roy has a wild technique, and focus. He turns red because he is mentally straining and forgetting to breathe. He plays a long line and then takes a breath. The lessons I took back in 94, teacher would wrap my knuckles with a little stick and shout "breathe", correcting a common habit, mostly among the self taught like most of the greats we know about.

Hello, what a great reaction! Roy Clark is a beast on several instruments. Just as others have said in the comments. I'd suggest giving this one a listen, if interested. "Roy Clark - 12th Street Rag" (by the channel: When The Cowboy Sings) --12th Street Rag is a classical ragtime song composed by Euday L. Bowman in 1914. It was one of the more popular and successful ragtime songs of the time, and since has become the standard in the genre. The song is characterized by its upbeat tempo, syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies, which makes it a challenging piece to play. I believe this song was also used in the popular animated television show SpongeBob SquarePants. I grew up watching Roy Clark and several other wonderfully talented artists perform on the show "Hee-Haw." my grandfather would always say there's no other guitarist greater than Roy Clark except for Bill Monroe (The Father of Bluegrass) 😏 I really enjoyed both of your reactions. Thanks so much for sharing. peace out~

What's wild here in that in real life Roy Clark, who is kind of playing the small town country singer, was actually from the New York City/New Jersey area, and was both a professional boxer and baseball player, minor leagues, in his earlier life. And Tony Randall however, who's playing Felix, the snobby New York unbanite, actually grew up in eastern Oklahoma near Arkansas.

Not exactly. Roy Clark was born and raised in Virginia. Roy's father was a tobacco farmer and professional musician, hence his work took him to NYC frequently. When Roy was 11, his family moved to Washington DC. Roy lived in DC until he made it big in Country music. Roy Clark wasn't a baseball player, nor a boxer. Heck, he became a professional musician at age 15, made his TV debut at 16, won the National Banjo Championships at age 14 & 15, and was performing at the Grand Ole Opry by age 17. While there was a pro baseball player named Roy Clark - he was NOT the same person as Roy Clark, the musician. Tony Randall was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After a year studying at Northwestern, Randall moved to NYC to study acting. After serving in WW2, Randall moved permanently to NYC.

During the late 70's to the 90's most of the worlds best guitarists would visit Roy Clark's Ocala, FL. ranch to jam with him.

Flamingo music is some of the hardest music to play in the world. Roy Clark slayed this one throughout his life.

Roy Clark played at our county fair one year, I still wish we had gone to that concert, and there was a picture in one of our local newspapers of Roy and one of the sheriffs deputy who was quite tall. He must have been around 6' 7“ or 6' 8" and Roy Clark had a huge grin while standing tipietoe and still not getting close to our deputys height. They both had pretty good grins and the deputy told me that Mr. Clark was just the nicest guy 💖 They are both gone now, but the memories are still with us

Clark was a good friend of my grandpa. I have a picture with him trying to 'teach' me the banjo. I was about two or three. I had no idea, at the time, I was in the company of greatness.

Roy Clark was best known for Hee Haw to a lot of people, but his talent was undoubted. Charo plays a mean Malagueña too. If you only saw her on ‘70’s TV doing “Coochie Coochie” you missed a great talent there, as well.

I've seen that video from the TV show many, many times. I've enjoyed it every single time. I love the part when he's tapping on the guitar to represent the dancing that a flamenco dancer is doing. I can picture the image of a dancer tapping her shoes at point.
