Roy Clark died in 2018, but I don't know when this was recorded. He is surely missed. What a talent!

Roy Clark was so talented. Eddie Van Halen said Roy Clark was the only person who he wouldn't go against in a guitar challenge. He said Roy could play him under the table. He used to go to pawn shops and pick up an instrument. Once he figured out how to play it, he'd get a different instrument and learn it, and then go get a different one. He could play the hell out of anything with strings. Check out the Odd Couple episode he was on when he played an old friend of Oscar Madison. He is an incredible performer.

Roy lived on a farm and learned to play guitar with mail-order guitar lessons.

The key aspect is learning to finger pick a 5 string banjo. You can then bring that over to a guitar and quadruple your picking speed. Finger picking uses all 5 fingers to play, and that significantly increases your speed and allows playing multiple notes at once. My mother used to finger pick (banjo and guitar) - she wasn't up to Roy's or Doc Watson's level, but it really makes a big difference compared to holding a plastic pick between thumb and forefinger. What Rock Musicians pioneered was ways to manipulate the sound both in instrument and afterwards to get more types of sound. 2 different and complementary skills.

Someone once asked Eddie Van Haley what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world? He said ‘I don’t know, you’d have to ask Roy Clarke’…

He might have been "old" but he could still play the banjo! He was 85 when he passed & is now playing, entertaining & laughing in Heaven. Thanks Michael for showing Roy's talent!

Hee-Haw one of the best TV shows ever aired. There has never been anything even close. I still watch old recordings to this day. "Where, oh where, are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over and thought I'd found true love, you met another and pffffft you were gone!"

In conservations of the greatest guitar player, they tend to forget Roy Clark. He could play just about anything with strings along with several other instruments. Roy had a long running show in Branson, MO that we tried to get into, but they were always sold out. Growing up with Hee-Haw gave me the appreciation for music in general along with a "korny" sense of humor.

Once someone learns how to finger pick a 5 string Banjo, they become much better at playing any plucked string instrument. Thus method of playing requires all five fingers to be doing things at the same time.

My dad worth them...along with his plaid shirt with pearl snap buttons. I think my mom had a matching pair as well.😂 Hee Haw was my childhood. I remember my grandmothe yelling at us kids that Hee Haw was coming on. It was how she got us to come in from playing outside all day. I recognize all of these faces even though they've aged a fair bit. It's kind of bittersweet to watch this. It's got me tearing up a little.❤

In 1992, Bill Gaither created a show called ‘Gaither Homecoming’ which featured the great singers and older pioneers of gospel music, some of whom had retired. It was a huge success and still runs today. This show was country music’s answer to copycat the success of that show. That’s singer/songwriter’Whispering Bill’ Anderson hosting. He’s still alive at 87!

I would watch "Hee Haw", on Sat nite WPIX ch 11❤. B4 church Sun. Minni Pearl with tag on her hat ( she reminded me of Sister Walters from Kentucky who was a missionary who was always welcomed and beloved in our Spanish English Damascus Christian Church in the South Bronx). Roy Clark banjo 🪕 Ihe was funny didn't know he was still alive. Buck Owens and The girl with the farmer jeans, passed away. Cathy Baker. I loved the show that's what made me appreciate Dolly Parton later on. It was good clean fun, and the girls were pretty.🎉
