Jaws (1975) ✦ Reaction & Review ✦ I thought the shark would be the worst part... 🦈

This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Jaws, released in 1975 and directed by Steven Spielberg. "We're gonna need a bigger boat!" I think that this film holds up so well today and Steven honestly nailed it, despite all the complications during filming. I loved the intensity, the action, the dialogue, the actors, and the score by John Williams was the cherry on top. Nothing looked fake, everything looked real! And the jumpscare certainly got me. All of the basic trivia I have for this was covered by your Wiki investigation and some of the other commenters. I will, however, as the champion of the underdog, mention the film Spielberg made before this one, his feature theatrical directorial debut The Sugarland Express. It is a fascinating drama based on a true story, and it's really overlooked (the Spielberg film from this period that gets the most attention is Duel, which was made for television but then expanded a bit and released to theaters overseas). In a lot of ways, it was the issues while filming this movie, particularly the trouble with Bruce that caused much of what was supposed to appear earlier in the film to not be shot worked to its advantage in building suspense. This movie might not be the classic it now is if Bruce had worked as planned.

Sharks use to follow the ship when I was in the Navy. I'm sure s big part of that was us dumping leftovers after each meal. Saw a few, even a hammerhead around while we were launching small boats.

Fun fact Lee Fiero, who played the woman who slapped Brodie, was in San Diego years later. She and her friend walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that they had an item called The Alex Kitner Sandwich. When Lee mentioned that she played Alex's mom, suddenly a man ran up to her from the back room. It was the owner - and he was the actor who played her son, Alex. They had not seen each other since the film wrapped.

For context, the reason the townspeople don't want the beaches closed are two fold. First, repeat shark attacks in the same area were almost unheard of, and not since 1916 in Matawan Creek in NJ, which inspired Benchley's story. Second, they are a summer rentals town in New England. Everyone on that island earns what they will to support themselves for the entire following year in the two and a half months of summer that are warm enough for the beach. 24 hours is, quite literally, two weeks worth of their potential income for the rest of the year. As for the mayor, the book explains his behavior more thoroughly. His wife got very ill and in order to get her treated in NYC, he went in debt to the Mafia there. He sold them rental properties on the island to pay back what he owed through the rental income. No beach open, no renters, no income, cement shoes for Larry. They killed Brody's kids' cat and left it on his doorstep as a warning even. So yeah, he had a very pressing need to have those beaches stay open. Course in the book, there are no likeable characters, Brody is a mean drunk, his wife cheats on him with Hooper, Hooper is an absolute a-hole. The movie was lightyears better.

Often overlooked about this movie is that it's essentially a double feature. Two movies: the first is a disaster movie of the sort that was in vogue at the time, where there's always a stock villain who puts cost-cutting over safety (the Mayor). The second is a whole-plot reference to Moby Dick, with Quint as Ahab and a white shark instead of a white whale (his speech about the Indianapolis revealing why he's obsessed with hunting sharks, and wants the kill for himself, no calling for extra help).

As a boy scout in Florida I was taken on a fishing trip on a boat in some crystal clear water. I caught something that felt big. As I was reeling it in it suddenly felt much stronger. As it got closer to the boat part of the "fish" visibly swam away. I reeled in a huge grouper that had been eaten all the way up to it's head. We could see the shark that are it swimming around the boat for a couple of minutes before it left

I love this movie! Especially the U.S.S. Indianapolis scene. Very riveting. I also remember going to the island where this was filmed (Martha's Vineyard) just a couple of years after. It was really cool seeing some of the filming locations.

The dog that played "Tippit?" (sp?) died not long after the movie and his/her gravestone/marker is on Martha's Vineyard and people go and visit him all the time.

@minnesotajones261 I heard about that years later. I was in sixth grade when I was there (just before summer vacation, on a school trip). We took the ferry over and rented bicycles to ride around the island all day and see the sights (with chaperones, of course). It's a beautiful island.

You're never going to see another movie start out as a horror film, switch to a seaborne hunting adventure somewhere in the middle, then slam back into horror for the final reel. At least not as successfully as this. It's wonderful that you appreciate the score so much. I've watched a lot of reactions to _Jaws_ and almost all of them ask, "Why is the music suddenly so _happy?"_ Because the humans are chasing the shark, guys! Once the tables are turned again, it switches back seamlessly to the scary stuff, and John Williams' Oscar was well-earned. (His score for _Jaws_ and Jerry Goldsmith's score for _Capricorn One_ a couple of years later made me a movie score fan for life.)

A year late replying to this, but I think the triumphant sounding part of the score is absolutely genius and actually adds a little levity without having to force the levity into the dialogue between the Quint, Brody, and Hooper. On top of that, at that point in the hunt it probably was appropriate music for the way Quint and Hooper were feeling. I honestly think the movie needs that part of the score to be the success that it was. Sounds crazy maybe, but I stand by it.

The monster is never the villain. Monsters represent nature, they're no more the villain than a storm or an earthquake. They're a *circumstance,* they are thing that happens to the human characters and how they respond shows you who the heroes and villains are. Sharks are *supposed* to eat people. When the shark eats someone, it's not being a *bad person,* it's being a *good shark.* The MAYOR is the a$$hole in this story...

There's a play I've been dying to see called "The Shark is Broken". It was written by Robert Shaw's son and takes place entirely on the set of the Orca as Shaw, Dreyfuss and Scheider are sitting around waiting for the technicians to fix the shark so they can get back to filming.

I was 5 when this movie came out. We all loaded up in the Station Wagon and went to the Drive-In to see it. We had lawn chairs that we sat in front of our car and watched the movie. Everytime the shark would come, my mom would honk the horn and scare us all. Such a fun memory. Thank you for the reaction and the memory!!

My #1 movie of all time. Saw it when it was released I was 11. Probably the reason I never learned to swim. I've seen it easily over hundred times The play between Hooper and Quint is so good... I read the book soon after though the movie follows the basic story it is different... great read. 💚

I spotted a reef shark while snorkeling in Hawaii. It was about four feet long, and I kept my distance. And while I have no memory of this, my mother insists I had an absurdly casual tone while telling her about it.

My favorite movie of all time! When I was young I lived in Northern California, which has a sizeable white shark population. I remember seeing a 17 foot (5-6 meter) white shark on display by the beach in Monterey - it had been caught inadvertently and frozen by the fisherman for the purposes of exhibition. I was, and still am, fascinated by the ocean and by sharks. I saw s live nurse shark (fairly harmless bottom feeder unless provoked) while snorkeling in Florida. Other than that, no wild sightings. Amazing that Spielberg 's first big hit still holds up decades later! Love your reactions.

This movie taught me what "Held Over" meant in the newspapers when it kept playing at the theater for over a full year after it was released. We didn't have cable or VHS back then, so seeing Jaws at the theater was the ONLY way to possibly see it.

My first duty station in the military was on the tiny island of Guam. It was surrounded by a coral reef and was ideal for daily snorkeling, and occasional scuba diving outings. My only night dive I was being bumped by a four foot Sand Shark ...it wasn't really a dangerous situation but.. in the darkness, with just my diving light...a shark is a shark.... If I could've crapped the ocean full and ran on top, I would've 😆 LOL ... Never went night diving again. On another note, I adore your hairstyle. 👍

Yes, I've seen sharks "in the wild." While reef snorkeling at the Galapagos islands, there were a number of medium-sized sharks among the other fish. Not really dangerous to humans.

I have seen small reef sharks while snorkeling on The Great Barrier Reef. Also I grew up in Sydney and swam at beaches where sharks were prevalent - used to pick up Wobbegong eggs from the beach as kids. [Wobbegong is a type of carpet shark - not dangerous]. Can see Bull Shark fins in many rivers in South East Queensland where I live, especially in the canals on the Gold Coast and in the Brisbane and Logan Rivers. Bull Sharks will swim in fresh water as well - they breed in the rivers.

Brody was my favourite character, he`s in almost every escene and nail it. Scheider performs such a different type of cop than the one he played in The French Connection, but again, such a wonderful acting. He should get a nod for his performance in this film too.

since you asked, when i was a kid my father use to take me fishing on the charter boats off Hamton Beach and there were times all we could catch were sand sharks which are only 3 feet long, this was between the releases of Jaws 1 and 2 and i was 7 when 1 came out.

The Shark took so long to work that Spielberg didn't even think he'd ever get the movie done. The studio started to complain to which Spielberg said look I'm trying to get this fucking movie made here ... the studio didn't say much after that. They got their masterpiece.

Plenty of stories of why I dont get in the water while living on an island always heard multiple stories of shark attacks each year. Seeing the survivors helps you respect the water and the creatures in it.

Young viewers immersed in CGI photorealism tend to bank their expectations of old films on whether or not some technical aspect will ruin suspension of disbelief... but the more you dig into the classics, the more you understand that only propulsive visual storytelling (not mere prosaic photorealism) and indelible characters make a film stand the test of time.

There was a grey tipped shark that always hung around the same spot next to a small island a short distance offshore. We called him Brutus (for some reason I forgot) and he liked us petting and stroking him. He was lovely and chilled and didn't seem to have an ounce of brutality in him given his name was Brutus.

Most sharks are fairly docile unless they're feeding. Not so much Great Whites, though. They still tend not to attack humans unless they look like seals or something else they normally eat.

The actress playing the skinny dipping girl was being dragged by members of the film crew with her in a harness - so hard, they broke some of her ribs - that's why her screams sounded authentic, she was in serious pain! Notice how Quint warned the shark "he'll swallow you whole". It sure did! When the actress playing the killed boys mother smacked Roy Scheiders face, she actually smacked him, as she didn't know how to fake it. They did more than one take, but Scheider put up with it to get the scene, as she apologized profusely between shots. The shark models, there were three, were named Bruce, after Speilberg's lawyer. Robert Shaw gave Dreyfuss a really hard time on the shoots. Richard says now he knows Robert was doing it to get reactions for the movie, but at the time, Richard pretty much hated Shaw. Robert Shaw had a renowned drinking problem. He got drunk for the scene where he tells the story of ship sinking. Too drunk. He was humbled and entirely apologetic for his unprofessionalism. They had to reshoot it again another night, where Shaw was stoned cold sober, where he rewrote a lot of what was in the script, and improvised the rest. A last one I can remember to mention, in the Peter Benchley's book, Ellen has an affair with Hooper. Oh wait, one more, in the book, Hooper gets eaten too. They edited it that way, but the test audiences hated it, so Hooper got to live. And, fwiw., this movie does really good job of getting the "feel" of a small Atlantic shore town of that era. l lived in one during summers growing up, and every time I watch this movie I get a kick out of spending the time back in time that was the mid 70's when this came out. So funny, all the tourists scared to go in the ocean! You're more likely to get killed in a plane crash, of getting hit by lightening, than getting bitten/eaten by a shark. I dove with sharks in the Bahamas as an adult. There's a story there, but I'll spare everyone with this long comment being longer as I'd have to set it up to tell it.

Thaddeus Skywalker Yep, the myth about Susan Backlinie breaking bones was started by a sound man who wasn't there. This first appeared in the 1997 BBC documentary In The Teeth of Jaws. Her screams were later re-recorded in the studio later on. She did her own re-recording.

This movie is gold...in every sense. From the unplanned point of view of the shark camera work they were forced to do because it so rarely worked, to the iconic music. The acting, the shots, the tension Spielberg builds is just spot on. Even when Brody is walking in town to get the painting supplies it's chaotic. Everyone wanting a piece of him, spilling the paintbrushes, etc. It's just always tension built and it's effective. You asked if anyone had any experience with sharks. I actually had an open water swim with several bull sharks. But let me back up...A lot of blame is placed on this movie for raising a fear of sharks, but I also think the movie is responsible for raising awareness and respect for sharks. Peter Benchley (book author, news reporter in the film) had a change of heart after the success of Jaws and became an advocate for sharks. Personally, I was 9 years old when this came out and it began my obsession with sharks (and this film). Love them. And though this is my favorite movie, that's just what it is...a movie. Just good popcorn fun blockbuster cinema. But these are remarkable animals. So in 2021 I celebrated being cancer-free for a year with my wife and I heading to Jupiter Florida where they do open water shark dives and it was absolutely amazing. Never felt in danger and highly recommend it. I believe I counted 8 bull sharks around us (much more aggressive than Whites). If you're in the areas check out floridasharkdiving.com. My bucketlist/goal is to reach the 5-year cancer free status and take a trip to cage dive with great whites. Enjoyed your review, keep it up! BTW, Jaws should be the only "Jaws" movie you review. The rest are not near the same level.

💚 Because you asked. Okay... here's my shark story. No, I've never seen one out in the wild. I've been to aquaria where they have sharks, but that's not the same thing. I saw Jaws when it came out. It was scary, but in a not-my-problem kind of way. I grew up in St. Louis. My only two trips to the oceans were in 1969 (Atlantic) and 1971 (Pacific), well before Jaws came out. Sharks were the furthest thing from my mind. I didn't get back to an ocean until 1984 when I moved to LA. My brother lived in Santa Barbara, and I stopped there on the way out for a visit. This was August 1984. It was a beautiful, sunny, late summer day. My brother and I were hanging out on the beach. I guess it was around 1:00 p.m. when I suggested that we swim out to the channel marker buoy. It's not far. About a quarter mile out. We were both swimmers growing up. Pool swimmers, but capable. So, he thought that was a fine idea. And, we swam out to the buoy. And, We held on, to take a minute to catch our breath. And, I'm holding on to the buoy, out there... in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The sun was bright overhead. It lit up my feet, treading in the water. And, I could see the cable that connects the buoy to the ocean floor descending from where we were... down... down... down... disappearing into the inky blackness below. And, all of the sudden, I realized that I was way out... in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! I looked over toward the distant shore, barely visible above the horizon and the waves. Way, far away. And... from the recesses of my mind I heard John Williams' classic score. Dah-dum.... Dah-dum... dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum.... And, for the first time in my life, genuine fear gripped me. And, I could get not back to the shore fast enough. All the way back, looking deep into the water for any tell-tale movement. Stroke, breathe, stoke, breathe... don't panic... don't panic... And, I guess about 100 feet from the shore, there are large swaths of kelp, that kind of ebb to and fro with the water and the waves, and they brushed up against my legs and my arms, and... I panicked! I never swam so hard as right there toward the end. Of course, we survived. We were not attacked. No one died in the story. But... I tell you what... I have not been back into deep water at the beach since. I'll wade out a little ways, but even then... it freaks me out. Mostly, I'll just take off my shoes and my socks and dip my toes in the water when I see the ocean. Any ocean. So... yeah... Jaws was a powerful movie that made a real impression on me. So much so, that I didn't even realize it until I was... actually... out there. As always, thank you for the watch. I'll look forward to the next one. 💚

The first great white shark I ever saw was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which was over 10 years ago. A little over a year ago, I saw a great white off the coast of Pismo Beach at the very edge of the historic pier. The water was very clear that day and the shark was just drifting along. Must have been 8-9 feet long. It was a neat sight. I love this movie. John Williams' score is perfect. The three actors are perfectly cast and are great characters. Quint's Indianapolis speech is incredibly eerie, and one of the greatest monologues in cinema history. My favorite shot is seeing the Orca leaving the dock and we saw the jaws of the shark encircled around it. One criticism, didn't need the "SHOOT HER!" from Jurassic Park. Not necessary. If you haven't already, please watch the making of this movie, and then watch a fun documentary called "The Shark Is Still Working: The Impact & Legacy of JAWS".

The author of the novel, Peter Benchley, makes a cameo as the TV reporter filming on the beach on the 4th of July. I lived in a small town, and when Jaws finally came to the hometown theater (2 years after its release!) the theater sold out every show for the 3 days it was in town. It was literally the biggest event in decades, lol.

I have seen sharks while boating in Florida's gulf coast. I saw a hammerhead swim past my boat while sailing. I saw a second shark while our motorboat was anchored in shallow water.

The mechanical shark malfunctioned so frequently that they couldn't use it nearly as much as they had planned, but it's generally agreed that a better film was made because of the workarounds that were necessary.

They never planned to use Bruce for any of the beach scenes though only for the Orca based scenes. That's where the sharks failed to work properly.

@@regould221 No mate that was just the fin contraption used in Sengekontacket Pond. Filmed early July. Later on in September when they were filming the final shots in Katama Bay where the shark is attacking Brody on the mast as the Orca is sinking, they decided to film an insert shot of the shark taking the red rowboat man, because Bruce was working well then. They also filmed the insert shot of Bruce coming up and taking the Kitner boy on the raft. Neither of those shots were planned when they were filming those scenes initially in June and July. This is all in Jaws, Memories From Martha's Vineyard 👍

I had the honor to speak to a survivor of the USS Indianapolis and the stories he told me were so chilling it's amazing how anyone survived in that water. He said, during the day they sang songs and at night they held onto each other and prayed. One of the most horrifying things he told me was when it was dark and he would hear someone in the distant screaming as they were being torn apart by sharks and thinking he would be next.

I did catch the full length on Patreon but I like catching the edited versions for the reviews. I used to live in Houston, just 45 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston. And we did see a shark swimming in the shallow water one summer day at the beach. Having seen Jaws, I have not been in the ocean past my knees ever since. Of course I now live in a land locked state, so less of an issue nowadays. I like Matt. He says what needs to be said and is confident in his knowledge. 1. Goof: Chrissie's body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed up there without a storm. 2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their Merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own. 3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off. 4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time. 🤣 5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen. 6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish. 7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce. There was also a behind the scenes regarding budget issues. 8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER. 9. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story. 10. I was in the Navy and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting any animal attack. 11. All of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea. 12. IRL the boy that said, "He made me do it." recently became the town police chief of the town where this was filmed. 13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody. 14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayor's son. 15. The third one was so bad that Scheider read the script and said NO. To answer your question about having seen a shark. Yes, a hammerhead😲😎 while tuna fishing with other guys off Hawaii. He tried to bogart the fish, but we landed our limit. It didn't suck because we had a boat, and he didn't.

I usually SKIP Jaws reactions now, there are so many, only with special reactors so it is truly a testament to YOUR reaction videos that I didn't think twice about clicking on this. By the way, I hope you now do Spielberg's NEXT movie (again, in collaboration with John Williams and Richard Dreyfuss who played Hooper): the DAZZLING "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind"! It was the one-two punch of "Jaws", then "Close Encounters" which put Spielberg on the map. If all he ever did were those two films, we'd still be talking about him. It's about UFO sightings and alien contact. My favorite Spielberg film (and the film he talks about being the one he'd keep as his legacy above all others). HIGHLY recommending "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind". Came out the same year as Star Wars, which I saw opening day. I liked Star Wars ok, but I was BLOWN AWAY by "Close Encounters".

Jaws was the first summer blockbuster. The book is even better than the movie. This movie proved the genius of Steven Spielberg and John Williams. I was in the scuba industry when I first saw this movie. The next time I was out diving, needless to say my head was on a swivel!

RE: Hooper's glasses, given that Richard Dreyfuss's character does this for a living, Hooper undoubtedly has a mask with glass customized to his eyeglass prescription. I recall my father ordering just such a mask when I was a child.

Steven Spielberg used all 3 types of fear very well: 1. Dread: something is there but you don't know what and you feel fear without knowing what or why. Fear of the scary unknown which is much worse when you are sure something it there but not sure what. 2. Terror: now you know what it is, like a huge shark about to eat you, and you must try to frantically run or fight for your life against the scary monster. 3. Horror: you see something so shocking, so awful, so icky, that your mind can't handle it and you feel stunned by it. Gruesome bloody nastiness or maybe some supernatural monster like a vampire feeding or a zombie eating brains or a shark biting off a leg. He mixed up all 3 of these, starting with dread of the unseen unknown shark (thank you John Williams for the dreadful music!), mixing in a little terror with a glimpse of Chrissie's body, Alex Kintner's bloody death, Ben Gardner's head, and the scoutmaster's leg sinking down in the water. Then came the half hour where the shark is relentlessly hunting the three guys in their boat. They could teach classes on how to make good "horror" movies just by studying this one. I would expect nothing less from Spielberg.

Only sharks I've seen are in aquariums and whatnot. Those are great times though, being like a kid again "whoa a shark." Many people had trouble getting into the water after seeing this. Even swimming pools were difficult. It was before my time but so cool 💚

i was on a school trip to the keys in 7th grade. it was a weekend trip to a scuba/snorkeling camp. we were on a wreck snorkeling and a few hammerheads showed up. we asked a instructor if we had to get out. he said its our choice. myself and a few others stayed. i was more concerned about barracudas. i got some good pics with a disposable underwater camera. almost 40 years ago so camera's where not so popular

Roger Corman, who was one of the premier independent producer/directors of B movies (the term for quickly made genre films with smaller budgets that were quite profitable), noted that when he saw Jaws, he realized that his days making these kinds of films was over. This film signaled that studios had now figured out how to make a film with the appeal of a B movie, but now with a much larger budget. Thus the era of blockbuster films had arrived.

I loved your reaction to the shark as it came up towards Brody as he's throwing the bait into the water lol. I also love it when Brody says "You're going to need a bigger boat" lol. You asked if anyone has seen a shark in person. I lived in Florida for 36 years so yea, there's plenty of ocean. I don't have any thrilling stories or anything but I have seen plenty of Reef sharks, nurse sharks, hammerhead sharks, and other types of sharks along with other things like the bottle nose dolphin, stingray, manta ray, jellyfish, manatee, and all kinds of sea life. In fact, as a kid, I would bring a plastic bucket into the water and fill it half full of water. Then I would let the bucket float in the water in front of me. I would pick up seaweed that was floating near me and gently shake it over the bucket and see what would fall into the bucket. I would get all kinds of baby sea life like crabs, sea horses different types of fish, and all kinds of things.

I spent a week cage diving with Great Whites at Guadalupe Island, Mexico in 2019. It's not the adrenaline rush you might think it is. It was one of the most peaceful, almost zen-like experiences in my life. All of the daily stresses and mundane BS that usually occupies our brains just immediately disappear from your mind. In those moments, it seems like the only creatures that exist are you and the sharks. It was beyond amazing, They're gorgeous, majestic, and tragically misunderstood creatures (thanks in large part to this movie). The cinephile in me can't help but love this movie, but the shark enthusiast part of me hates the harm it's done to sharks' reputation, and by extension, to sharks themselves.

I have seen many sharks in person some aquariums and such, seen Sand Tigers, Tiger, Hammerhead, Bonnet Head, Leopard, Cat, Nurse, Black Tip. I’ve been shark fishing I’ve caught a Mako Shark, I’ve also caught a Sand Shark, and I’ve been swimming with Whale Sharks, Leopard, and Bonnet Heads. Love the thumbnail and I absolutely love the shoot her part! Jurassic Park is my favorite movie but I love the combo! 💚

I’ve been cage diving in South Africa. They threw out giant fish heads to attract the sharks and a couple of great whites came up to the boat, thought not as big thank god. Thrilling as well as nerve wracking because as soon as you are in the water you are in their territory and you respect them. Others may have told you but the reason we hardly see the shark is because the mechanical one kept breaking down so they decided that small glimpses, until the climax, enhanced the suspense and tension. The only time they use a real shark in certain shots is during Hoopers cage scene and they used a scaled down cage and a smaller stunt actor to make it look bigger. The real shark got caught in the cage lines and because the stunt double refused to get back into the cage they changed Hoopers fate ( he dies in the book) so that he escapes while the shark is trapped.

Jaws was the first summer blockbuster in history. The shark had mechanical issues but they got it working well enough. The death of the shark was a work of genius. The shark was stabbed in the belly and could not pull the barrels thru the water and it dies. That was the ending in the novel. Steven Spielberg wanted a explosive ending. The shark was loaded with red paint , fish guts, and dynamite. They only had it one chance to get it right. It went off perfectly and the audience went wild with cheers.

Of all the legends about this movie, my favorite is that Spielberg was unimpressed with the size of the real sharks they could find to film so he sent for jockeys from the horse track to be put in shark cages to make the sharks look bigger. That's just brilliant, imo. Who thinks like that? "Go get me a little guy, dammit!"

I used to surf Santa Cruz and sharks are common, leopard and great whites, mostly the sharks swim by without a care. Short boarders would paddle in and us long boarders would have the pick of waves to ourselves. Love sharks!

I had a shark encounter several years ago. I remember the date because it was two days before I was married. May 2nd, 2010. I was in Miami. I like going out to neck deep water when the waves are about medium, not too calm, but not rough either, and let them lift me up and set me back down. Not exactly a super sport, but I like it. I was still moving out deeper, currently about chest deep, and a decent size wave was coming at me. I turned sideways to help hold my balance when it hit, but as I was turning, I saw something from the corner of my eye. I swung my head back around and saw it swimming away from me, really fast. I couldn't tell you what kind of shark it was because it happened so fast, but I saw it from the tail clearly as it swam away from me. It was, of course, gray on top, and at least 10 to 12 feet in length. It was big right next to me! If I had known it was there, I could have simply put my hand out and rubbed it's back as it went by. That's how close it was. It wasn't an attack. I think it was just checking me out. If it had wanted me for dinner, it would have had me easily, but it never touched me. Still, I know now what a human heart tastes like, because mine came right up to my throat! Remembering all the documentaries I'd seen about sharks, I stayed calm, turned back toward the beach, and calmly started walking, being careful not to splash around like a wounded seal or something like that. My eyes was darting in every direction, in case it decided to come back. He didn't come back. Do I get in the ocean these days? You bet I do! I now live in Bradenton FL, and I still love going out neck deep and riding those waves.

When I was a kid my dad was stationed in Hawaii with the USMC. He went night fishing one night. I woke up in the early morning hours to go pee. I’m standing there in the dark in front of the toilet, when I heard splashing beside me in the bathtub. I turned on the lights and screamed loudly. There were five hammerhead sharks in the tub! This was about a year or two after Jaws was released. Dad got to sleep on the couch for a few days. Hahahahaha

Skin-dived a lot off Key Largo in the Florida Keys, and had various encounters with sharks. Hammerheads, Makos, Tigers etc etc. Keeping calm is the #1 rule. 99% of the time, you are in no danger.

I grew up in a town like amity and although the mayor is definitely the villain of this story I understand his motivation because we make a majority of our money to live during the summer and not having people here on the 4th of July weekend would be absolutely devastating. But like you said, he can just have the beaches open and the waters closed, the guy really didn't see the severity of the situation until it effected him almost directly, which I think can be said about a lot of people in power.

Kayaking from Long Beach CA to Catalina Island I had a tiger shark swim alongside and bump my kayak. Not aggressively but it was just curious I imagine. Great for a quick adrenaline surge. Later one of the local kayakers mentioned that sharks seemed to be attracted by the electrical current generated from the metal kayak rudders moving through seawater.
