@David a little fun fact trivia about this scene...... the reason the shark turned away from Lucy was to go after Bob. But the infamous "Bob's death" scene was cut from the final film due to the graphic and disturbing manner of his onscreen death. I really wish I could have watched it but I think most footage was destroyed. If you Google Bob's death you'll see a picture of the moment before his attack and it definitely looks scary as hell.

@@ppiorkowski1502 Also if you listen closely just after Lucy's attack, you will hear one of the girls (Brooke I think) scream Bob's name, presumably because he'd just been eaten. Also when the kids are all on cable junction just prior to the shark's demise, you don't see Bob at all in any of the wideshots. Universal apparently have all the footage still in the vaults but because some of it was shot by John Hancock they have to get his permission or something like that.

I think he was just paddling towards Cable Junction and the shark just popped up outta nowhere and Bob was probably frozen in fear. Which I don't think would have mattered much anyway because we all know based on the history of these films when the sharks head is THIS exposed the attack is probably about a half of second away.

I remember as a kid I use to think Lucy got bit by the shark but she wrestled her way away from it. But as I got older I though well that’s not right. So then I thought the shark just missed her and the rough skin cut her as it passed. But now I’m reading that the reason the shark doesn’t eat her is because in a deleted scene, it goes after Tom whose injured and on a piece of the boat. Which makes a lot more sense as to why the shark just passes Lucy.

This is why you see him at the end on the island by himself saying Thank You to Our Lord. He was filmed by himself because they had to add the scene last minute. And the reason it wasn't in the movie was because it was way too violent of a death and it would have changed the PG rating. There's no video but if you look up Bob's death for Jaws 2 you'll see a picture of it about to go down and it looks extremely scary. Like disturbing.

The trick to the first one was you barely saw it, and when you did it was obvious that hours of work had done into making it presentable. Literal hours for split seconds, but it worked. Here, they let it all hang out, hydro-pump in Jaws' mouth and everything.

Part of the problem with the sharks after the first, aside from the removal of the jowls and their uncanny ability to float on top of the water, is that the prop department never painted the sharks like the first. The original, in most scenes, had a very dark blue/gray top counterbalanced with a very white underbelly. Starting with this shark, the top is a very dull gray and the underbelly is nearly as gray. The fourth shark at times appears to have a beige/ pink coloring on the belly. A little aesthetic care goes a long way. Wouldn't have saved the fourth shark or movie, but still...

If you notice Bob is the only one not seen with the group celebrating and his scene was re-shot after the testing found it too harsh a death and was given an R. The scene still has reminiscence of it. The moment when the shark swims by Lucy without eating her is because Bob was injured from the fall and floating on the piece of raft, it was going after Bob and Lucy happened to be in the way. At 2:34 you can still hear Jackie scream "Bob". This is because the sequence had to be re-edited and the bit where Brody rushes for the raft happened the same time Bob as attacked.

@@gutz1981 There was, according to various production reports, quite a bit of editing that happened in order to make sure that the film secured the appropriate rating (i.e. for teenagers who were essentially the target audience for this film). Other edits included the water-skier's death earlier in the film- the shot of the shark's head coming out of the water to eat Marge was taken from the first part of the movie where it would have been seen dragging the water-skier down (there was an outtake of this on KZbin up until a few months ago, I think it's been removed since). The helicopter pilot attack was, of course, trimmed down (and turned up in the deleted scenes later on) and John Hancock's original cut featured Martin having a heart attack and being taken by ambulance (photos of this exist online).

This is the only film in the *JAWS* franchise that I agree with its rating (PG) at the time of its release. Today, it would be PG-13. The other films, on the other hand, are rated too weakly for the amount of content that's contained in them.
