/ ydaw - Our local zoo is hosting a small army of animatronic dinosaurs. Seemed like a good idea to go and have a look. We definitely noticed some things about their jaws.

The animatronics you point out with the odd jaw placements are depicted with cheeks, so I’m guessing having a shorter mechanism and not modelling the inside of the mouth would be cheaper.
@diemwing
@diemwing 2 ай бұрын
That's a good observation. I wonder if it meant a less powerful (and therefore less expensive) motor/solinoid as well
@patreekotime4578
@patreekotime4578 2 ай бұрын
@@diemwing Doubtful... the cheapest way is to have as many of the same motor as possible and use it over and over. So the guys with the big heavy cheeks likely have a joint after the cheeks to keep the stresses the same.
@ASM42186
@ASM42186 2 ай бұрын
You're partly correct. The carnivores all have thin latex jaw muscles. The solid foam construction of the herbivore heads limit how much the jaw can move, so they hinge it halfway instead of making the entire jaw move. The motors would burn out if they had to stretch that much silicone-coated foam.

Has anyone tried to make a FNaF-type game with dino animatronics? Seems like a natural offshoot.

There's a game on steam called 'Terrible Lizards' that's a dino horror set at a route 66 attraction, it's only up for wishlist rn but it sounds really neat!

Not "realistic" ones (resembling actual dinosaurs), but I'm certain someone must have done one with cartoony dinos at some point

Interesting! Makes sense that they'd lean more towards FNaF animatronics than something more like the ones at the zoo, but I was sorta hoping someone had given the latter a shot just to see what they might have come up with.

I think I heard about a game set in a museum with animatronic dinosaurs or dinosaur displays coming to life but I forgot what it's called

The game is called PALEOPHAGE and it's set in a museum but at appears the dinosaurs aren't animatronics coming to life

Reminds me of the time that I went to the national zoo as part of a school trip and got jumpscared by a quetzalcoatlus animatronic that was in some bushes

Most of them are on a timer or are motion activated. Yeah, it's annoying how they keep making the herbivore jaws articulate that way. But it's hard for me to get the factories to make the plant eaters with the full range of jaw motion. Especially with all of the thick foam surrounding the jaws. They're very set in their production design pipeline and often get disgruntled when I try and get them to change things.

God, i remember seeing some of these as a kid. The Dilophosaurus sticks in my mind; no frill and the right size, but the designers still HAD to run a little hose out the mouth so it could spit, because we can never fully escape Jurassic Park.

Dino Don's animatronics are definitely a step up from some of the more 'outdated' designs from Billings Productions and friends in terms of anatomical accuracy, but under the skin they're still pretty bare-bones (pun intended) since they're made on the cheap in China and still have the same basic mechanical skeletons as the ones we remember from decades ago.
@ASM42186
@ASM42186 2 ай бұрын
You are correct. I've been working for Don the last 3 years in China. The mechanical frames are pretty consistent with very few innovations taking place. But I'm proud that our more recent products are more accurate than those produced before my involvement.

Love these shorts! It's wild I've never heard of these animatornics just in a zoo before! It's a super cool idea!! Also, I'm really thinking about getting that All Dinos So Far Shirt, it's a great design and I'd finally have a dinosaur shirt!
