/ ydaw - This Gastonia animatronic we saw at our local zoo was actually pretty good. Bit thin though. Check out our merch and support our videos! yourdinosaursa... Dimbo font created by Jayvee D. (CC BY SA 3.0)

This zoo is clearly not up to regulations. That ankylosaur is clearly starving!

This might be strange but he does actually look like 'paleontology' personified

Yes low to the ground, defensive natured herbivores must be WIDE. This is kind of like making a narrow bull, and yes, I am calling Ankylosaurus a dinosaur cow

first time I've heard of such comparison~ I myself call hadrosaurs a dinosaur horse, so yeah, we need dinosaur cows too

Also it seems to having cheeks like mammals. In reality, there is some debate regarding the presence and extent of cheek coverings in herbivore dinosaurs like Gastonia. Paleontologists originally believed that cheeks were present in most ornithischians, as a covering over the sides of the mouth would help keep plant material contained within the jaws as the animal chewed, the cheek teeth of many ornithischians were inset, with an overhanging maxilla and large dentary, suggesting that a cheek-like soft tissue structure might have stretched between the lower and upper jaws, and small foramina along many ornithischian jaw bone margins may be evidence of neurovascular structures that nourished cheek structures and supplied them with blood. However, a study in 2018 found that, rather than a more mammal-like arrangement of muscle fibers directed straight down from an attachment ridge on the upper jaw to the lower jaw, ornithischians probably had a forward-extending fan of muscle attached to the lower jaw at one end and the rest of the cranium at the other underneath the flaring cheek bone instead, indicating that truly muscular cheeks covering the entire extent of the back part of the mouth are unlikely. However, thinner, non-muscular cheek analogues are not ruled out for these animal. While the 2018 study is still heavily debated among paleontologists, the cheeks of the real Gastonia would likely be thinner, pushed further back, and shaped differently than the cheeks depicted on the animatronic.

This does seem more like a flap than a muscular cheek though. It is just bowed out because it is folded and is thick to make the material durable to countless iterations of folding and stretching.

Now now, it's about educating, not clowning! Lol 😝 But also, I noticed that the upper and lower beak don't meet when the mouth closes which seems to me would make it difficult to graze 🤔

I was obsessed with gastonia when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure I got one of the cards on the dinosaur king arcade game, and it was purple and highligter green and because it was an earth type it caused earthquakes and such while pink energy pulsed from it like some technicolor deity. It was so frigin cool

think about it like this animals with hollow crushible leg bones used to risk life and limb (Literally) just to try and eat these no one is going to try and fight a living armored vehicle that weights several tons and has its own mele wepons for no reason there was inventive to eat the dam things
