After putting 3 heavy floatation barrels in him, they needed to just get the fuck out of there. Bruce may be strong but eventually his muscles would fatigue, he would stop swimming and drown. Just like the strongest weightlifter in the world will eventually go unconscious with a very heavy weight permanently strapped to his back. I suppose the only downside is that they wouldn't get to SEE the shark sink and die. But living is preferable to that. And another downside would be a very boring movie, lol.

@@akshaynatu6568 it gets worse than that. If Quint, stayed calm and a slowly went into shore then the engine wouldn't have gone and they could have picked up a supplies and repaired the boat. His pride would have been stung but he'd be alive AND he'd have won in the long term.

@@akshaynatu6568 dunno how you think that lol because it's adding onto what you wrote. Quint keeps his head and drags the shark into shore by going somewhat slowly (sustainably) or hits the shark with some more barrels to slow it down more as well. Either way he's going to win and stay alive because Bruce will drown either by the barrels or he will drown in the shallow waters. Instead the reality of what they're up against hits Quint and he realises they're all out of ideas now. They're out of poison because of what happened to Hooper in the cage, Brody wasn't allowed any serious firearms on the boat or didn't think to take any, the sharks just gone down with three barrels which no shark has ever done before AND nearly dragged the boat further into the sea. Worse still, he's cooked their goose by breaking the radio so they can't call for help thanks to his ego and pride of wanting the kill to himself and the sharks jaws as a trophy.

As with Quints Last Stand, its nice to see how the unused music fits but ultimately I like it as is in the movie. Interestingly enough, when I saw Jaws with the live orchestra at the Royal Albert a few years ago, some unused music was used then including the gutting of the tiger shark.

@@Romulan2469 that's a problem synonymous with Hollywood today. Everything always has to be frigging bigger and more chaotic than before. More special effects, more explosions, more crazy action CGI scenes, more this, more that. It's bloody exhausting such a mentality.

@@kwl189 Agreed, it's why I keep going back to the classics like Jaws because I just can't watch movies of today. There is too much going on, with an overreliance on special effects, CGI and unrealistic action sequences whilst lacking in plot depth, storyline, lessons in morality etc. I think more educated people are drawn to the true classics.
@kwl189 Жыл бұрын
@@Romulan2469 Jaws is proof that silence can make more of an impact than useless noise being made noise sake. Subtlety and letting the consumers imagination embellish and create its own terror can be more effective than the imagination of a director, marketing team and a cameraman that takes a trip through a washing machine for a joke during a scene when something actually does happen. For example, when Hooper goes in the water at night when they find that boat and nothing really happens and it seems innocuous. Just at that moment he finds a hole in the boat and the person slides eerily into view with a mangled eye. The quiet of the scene, it really makes your heart thump the first time. Lack of plot depth is a massive issue with modern movies. It's just ridiculous the lack of detail and care taken. It's like the passion died a long time ago. In many old movies, there was no sense of justice or morality but the conveyance that life is cruel and unfair at times like a law abiding citizen dying or being cruelly punished for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Life can be like that. Now, movies are so quick to paint life as idealistic. Everything's neat and perfect and justice prevails all the bloody time etc. if it did, we wouldn't have the corrupt politicians that we do and we wouldn't have the rich running the whole damn world greedy and shaking the commoners for anything extra money like we do now.

The music is not restored. It is the cut from the album. This is not the music in the film. The pause and silence as the barrels go under is WAY more powerful without music than with it. John knows where to put the music and when to get the hell out of the way.
@danbeck4143 жыл бұрын
In fact the music from the album is what John Williams composed and recorded for the scene. The decision to dial out some of the music recorded for the scene in most cases is not a composer's decision, but more a director/editor decision. It is not unusual that a score is recorded by the composer and then the director and/or editor decides to not use some of the music and even use some tracks that were composed for a certain scene in other scenes (Jerry Goldsmith's Alien is a famous example, with the blu-ray including the original composer's score and the final version which even retained music that was composed for another movie [Freud] - James Horner's Aliens is a similar case)
@roquefortfiles3 жыл бұрын
@@danbeck414 Quints death doesn't need music. That piece that is on line is pointless and overly dramatic. The scene is a 100x more frightening with just the sound of the shark and his screaming. Then the silence of the shark taking him down. Shudder. With music it is over the top and maudlin. That's the Michael Bay version. Spielberg and Williams are both smart enough to know when to let the film speak.
@danbeck4143 жыл бұрын
@@roquefortfiles I fully agree this particular scene works better without music (but Williams originally recorded that piece for the scene). It is not unusual that the composer records more music than what is used to give the director options. Another well known example, but to the oposite, is that Hitchcock originaly wanted the shower scene in Psycho to be left without any music, but Herrmann scored it and then Hitchcock liked it better with music and left it in the movie.

Reality bit for Quint when Bruce went down again with the 3rd barrel. Having never seen a shark let alone a great white do that before, Quint was all out of tactics and knew their game was up. The only thing left to do was go back into shore, repair his boat, pick up supplies and come out again. Quint's pride and ego was such that he couldn't cope with the thought at that moment and with the boat also sinking, he made the mistake of running the engine too hard. I think if Quint held his nerve, he and the boat would have made into shore and the shark eventually would tire and die. But Quint didn't just kill sharks he hunted them and kept their jaws for a trophy. Personally I'd have been boring as hell and strapped up as many barrels as I had harpoons and fired them all into the shark. Absolutely saturate and saddle it to the brim and wait it out for the shark to die or make my way in slowly, teasing her in to drown.

@@thebrightsidepodcast301 I think you're confusing this movie with Deep Blue. Bruce (the name of the Jaws shark) was a big shark, but there was nothing super about it, and it definitely wasn't some sort of genius. @@michaelsong5555 Yea, he was partly successful due to that, but also because Quint probably thought he would be dealing with just another great white, not a 6 ton 25 footer that could drag three barrels under, which he had never seen before. It seems that by judging his facial expressions in this scene, he realizes he's out of his depth and in a world of trouble. Also, remember how at the town meeting Quint wanted to try to hunt Bruce by himself? I wonder how long he would have lasted if he didn't have Hooper and Brody with him. Would be interesting to watch. I figure he'd probably die on the first day.
@kwl189 Жыл бұрын
I think they did try go down the poison route with Hooper in the cage. Though the state of the cage afterwards...not only was the poison lost but Hooper was lucky to be alive. It was the 70s so what exactly would a sane thing have been to do? At best that means more heavy weaponary for Brody which could have cause serious bleeding on the shark possibly? The barrel idea wasn't a bad one. I just think Quint needed to stick with it and keep firing them into Bruce whilst making his way into shore. He's guaranteed to win either by drowning Bruce in shallow waters or by Bruce drowning in the sea through the barrels.
@kwl189 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelsong5555 Fairly smart of Bruce to batter the boat earlier in the movie and start the leak in the night? Fairly smart of Bruce to let them pick the line up and then run and attempt to pull them out to the sea. Bruce was outmuscling that boats engine easily which is crazy with three barrels on him. Agreed on why Bruce was so successful. One thing that always stuck with me on Jaws 2, is how the same stupid ass arrogant Mayor is still in charge at that stupid ass town full of morons and the way they gawk at Brody in the second movie when he shouts at them and signals them to get out of the water.
