I think the key word for Jax is "control." I would wager he didn't have much in his original life -- that he always felt dominated and unable to make any decisions for himself in one way or another. Which continued in the Circus with Caine's nonstop ridiculous adventures. At least until Jax realized that he could deliberately deviate from the intended path. Which gave him a greater sense of control, AND proved more entertaining to him in general. It's like when you've been playing a video game for so long that you can't think of anything else to do, so you do something crazy like set off as many proximity mines in one location as you can, or fire a rocket straight down at your feet to see how far you can corpse-launch yourself. That's basically Jax. It amuses him to try to break the game -- to cause glitches or deviate from how the adventure is intended to be experienced. If Caine gave them an adventure where they had to rob a bank, Jax would call dibs on being the getaway driver, then abide by all the traffic rules. The first time you mentioned him being upset was not when he was alone. It was when he "broke the game" by allying with the Fudge, only for the Fudge to (seemingly) get killed by the second falling tanker, effectively nullifying Jax's alternate path and putting him back on the intended one again. And, as you've noted, the others are starting to take control for themselves as well. But they're not taking it from Caine. They're taking it from Jax. He was fine with them thinking he was a jerk, but I have little doubt that it aggravates him, not just that they're wresting control away from him, but that they keep doing it only to forfeit it straight back to Caine again. Spudsy's was probably the most powerless Jax has felt in years. It was an adventure suggested by another member, it booted him into the training seminar if he tried to deviate from the assigned path, and perhaps worst of all for him, the end goal was nothing more than a timer. I kept expecting there to be a gag where Jax smashed the clock and turned all the hands forward manually. He'd probably like the others a lot more if they shared in his appreciation for playful chaos. He seems like the kind of guy who would enjoy playing with explosives in Gmod sandbox, and probably laugh at his ragdolling avatar the first time somebody got him with one.

Something I like about this show is that the characters wears a mask in some way: Ragatha wears a mask pretending to be fine while secretly having a mental breakdown, Zooble masks by purposefully not going on adventures, Jax does it by getting kicks out of causing chaos, Gangle quite literally wears masks, Caine does by convincing himself that everything's fine and there's no exit, Pomni does at the start by trying to convince herself that TADC is all just a dream. The only real exception to this is Bubble (but we haven't seen much of him in fairness) and Kinger but that's because Kinger has already made his peace with everything whereas the others haven't. None of them are fine; they just try and convince themselves they are. I personally think that they're all stand-ins for different mental health issues that are all commonly misjudged (many people have suggested that Gangle represents both depression and Ep4 having manic episodes displaying her on the autistic spectrum, both of which are massively misjudged) because it's much harder to try and get help when people are faced with stereotypes so to avoid shame, most people just simply hide it making it worse. TADC's whole message seems to be about caring for other people, even if you don't like them/know them personally and considering the mental health ramifications, I wouldn't be surprised if Gooseworks is basically saying 'Think before you speak' because it is WAY too easy in this case to fit the characters into one singular trope and fit them into one mental health carcature. Everyone is different.

I also thought about that after this episode. When Gooseworx wrote the story, they might have used mental disorders as archetypes for the characters. IMO, maybe the list goes like this: 1. Gangle: Bipolar disorder /Depression 2. Kinger: Schizophrenia 3. Zooble: Gender/Body dysphoria 4. Ragatha: Histrionic personality disorder 5. Jax: Antisocial personality disorder/ Sociopathy 6. Pomni: Generalized anxiety disorder It's not a one-to-one (especially Ragatha), but there are too many coincidences in this show for it not to be at least part of how these characters were constructed. As for autism, I don't think it describes Gangle because she has manic episodes in this last episode with her new mask, more akin to bipolar disorder. Her baseline is the sad mask (as in depression) with the occasional happy mask before Jax always breaks it. In episodes 1-3, she changes emotions instantly, as if to say that she can't control her mood. In episode 4, the plastic mask is introduced, which doesn't break. This means her mood is perpetually fixed as happy, and as someone with supposedly bipolar disorder/depression that is not natural (unmedicated). As a result she has manic episodes - she can't handle being happy 100% of the time. Considering that this adventure was Gangle's suggestion and it's a "normal" adventure, we can infer that more or less it tries to tell her real-life story before the circus. She was in a job incompatible with her condition, and she knows it. In a fast food chain, you always have to appear happy to the customers and you work A LOT. Gangle's plastic mask was an analogy to her real self (sad mask) putting up a facade to maintain her job, and that's frustrating on a day-to-day basis. That's why she tells Jax to diss the customer only after hours, and immediately after going to the back of the store, she removes her mask. She's unnaturally fixing her mood to be happy all the time. After a lot of time she mentions that by the end of the shift, if it was on another adventure, her happy mask would already be broken. She yearns for it to be broken sometimes and never complains too much when it happens. In short, IMO, it's elements of bipolar disorder with depressive tendencies.
@kemi_smith
@kemi_smith Күн бұрын
1:46 I think perhaps the different characters have different durabilities. Zooble's hand burns, likely because they could be made of plastic, as the toys you stick together like that usually are. Ragatha, on the other hand, is a rag doll so that explains why getting stabbed doesn't hurt her, and it could possibly be the same with getting burned/fried? Like, maybe the 'drowning' aspect is more painful to her than the heat.

I couldn’t place it at first, but this episode made me realize who Jax reminds me of. His energy reminds me of Duck from Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared - he’s rude even to the people he cares about, he never takes things seriously, he refuses to be the butt of the joke, etc. What really made me think of it was the fact that they both clearly thrive in the *_very_* upsetting environment they’re in, but when put in an actual real-life scenario, they don’t have a place that fits into that norm. When Duck is taken to become ‘part of the team,’ it takes him 40 years to become the model employee (I’m referencing the UK TV series). In both scenarios, they get put into a room to basically reform them into what our economic system is considered ‘useful,’ but they never actually feel like they fit in. Because they don’t. They’re like a class clown, where they thrive in an environment that isn’t indicative to the adult condition because they just can’t adjust to it. In the end they’re both just waiting for things to get back to _their_ normal, where they feel it’s easier to be cynical and nonchalant because none of it is real. Especially when they are perceived as the most well-adjusted to the specific circumstances they find themselves in, being confronted with the fact that they couldn’t realistically survive in any other environment is distressing. It’s easier to crack a joke or be jaded than to acknowledge such a fact.

DHMIS is kinda similar to TADC in a way, since my theory of Yellow guy is probably a kid named David and turned into a puppet by Leslie after he died by getting hit by a car, and he gets put into a child like world, with other people, like TADC, in which Caine represents Leslie

I honestly remember people theorizing Jax was the villain of the story since episode 1. A theory I disagreed with because Gooseworx normally doesn't sit answers out in the open. Another thing is he does put the others in dangerous situations. But clearly it takes a lot more than a fall, or being impaled to actually kill circus member. While they do feel pain, they've survived seriously dangerous circumstances. So why bother trying to harm someone, if you can't cause permanent damage physically? It's clear that Jax has a power complex. He prefers to be in control of a situation. And he also enjoys his reputation as a jerk. Then just as Digital Void here mentioned. He became a lot more vulnerable after the training video in the backroom. Showing that despite his tough exterior, he can be broken as far as confidence goes. He also breaks down in the car, which showed he had become mentally drained after the day's problems. If there is a villain, I think they're hiding in plain sight. Much more digging will have to be done. Before we uncover the dark secret about this circus. 💀 🎪 🤡

A theory I’ve had is that Jax lost some very close to him because in episode 2 when they talked about the funeral for the clown character it cuts to him looking like he remembers something but then goes back to his usual self. I believe that he remembers someone he lost, and as a defense mechanism in order not to feel that pain again he pushed the others away by acting like a jerk in order for no one to even remotely gets close to him.

I think by the end of the day he sees his comrades as more like equals than usual, because they all have to deal with the same thing; a really boring day, at a really boring job, being intimidated into doing really boring stuff because the manager is freaking out. For hours and hours. He even seems to acknowledge that Gangle is just losing it, so it's not worth arguing or fighting or trying to make it entertaining for himself. You can't distance yourself emotionally by saying "it doesn't matter" when it DOES matter. Even if it's for weird, non-reality reasons involving fear of further chair-based TV torture. Lacking physical freedom to leave TADC, I'm guessing he needs the emotional freedom to distance himself. If he can't do that, all he's left with is the soul-crushing reality of the situation. That's the kind of hardship that breaks Jax.

Personally I think Ragtha and Jax telling Gangle they like her better with her sad mask is a back handed complimented. The happy mask is a fake version of her that she is projecting in the same way people with depression hide their emotions. They are telling her, in a mean way, that they like her the way she is, not her fake happy self.

I kinda think Jax use his bully persona to protect himself. From what? Engaging with people? He show us before that he want to have control over things and hide some secrets. He is the only one who didn't want to show how his body react to holding breath. He run away from abstracted Kaufmo. He even prepared himself in ep3 with that vaccum cleaner and throwing Gangle's mask. He was chill in ep4 untill Gangle called Caine. And his question about being seen in situation,when he totally lost control... He also was annoyed by broken watch,cuz that was the only way for him to have some control. Talking with Zooble he still tried to use this fake persona, Ragatha annoyed him and the only one left was Pomni. And I think that he would talk more honesty with Pomni here if Gangle wasn't interrupt them. Pomni is also the only one (except maybe Kinger and Caine?) who react normal to his questions and interact with him,she is neutral one. In ep3 he asked her about adventure with Kinger,in ep4 he just normally talk to her. Maybe cuz she is the newest one? Maybe cuz she isn't act like others yet? Who knows? I'm also very into ep6. I want to know more about this jerk and how is his personality connected with rabbit 😂

I did find it interesting that in the beginning when Jax broke Gangles comedy mask again, while he doesn’t apologize, he admits that this time he didn’t mean to do it. I’m willing to take his word for it. And the other crazy part, was that he had a normal conversation with Pomni, without any jabs or insults. Jax in my opinion is a character that does what he does, not just because he’s a jerk, but because he’s a broken person who lashes out to make himself feel better. When people bully others, we never really think about why they bully. We only focus on the bad parts of them. People sometimes bully others to make themselves feel better, or because they have no better way to express themselves. I don’t see Jax improving as a character, but I can see him being slightly less of a jerk in the future.

I get patt of the feeling that Jax may have been a Soldier... Specifically, a _CHILD_ Soldier, since according to Grooseworks, Jax is 22 years old (Pomni is 25).. So unless there was some war that occurred shortly before he ended up in the circus, Jax may not have had a choice. It is notable that Jax has a lot of "Gallows Humor", that is, humor based around making light of death, and during the Events of Candy Carrier Chaos, he has a notable reaction to the distant 'Boom' of Pomni and Gummigoo breaking free with the second maple syrup truck... That is, he drops any and all "Jerkishness" and acts more "Professional". His usual persona would have had him sharply yank the binoculars away from Gangle (at her expense) and bring them up with a florish... But instead, he delicately plucks them from Gangle with surprising gentleness and brings them up to his eyes slowly, without a change in his expression... Almost like he has done that before in a situation where Panic would be the norm to anyone else. His hatred for a Normal life is likely because Jax _tried_ to enter a normal life once the conflict ended... And compared to a battlefield where adrenaline runs high and all you have is yourself and _Maybe_ your fellow bullet shields, he's stuck having to play around with what are, to him, people with personalities like spun glass. That being said, It is just a theory... And none of that Matpat nonsense. It has been dated for too many years, and his politics put me off... But anyway, if we follow the literal mindedness of Caine, we may get a look into Jax's past, since episode 3 was made specifically for Zooble, and there are implications of 1) Dismemberment, 2) Dysmorphia and 3) coming to terms with it, a kind of "Face your darkest self" case. Episode 4 faced Gangle off with her past on how she took on Fast Food work when her art degree got her nowhere. Ragatha's the next on the list for these episodes... And I think Jax's core self would be for episode 6, followed by Zooble for episode 7. Then again, I think I am getting the order wrong for this. Has been a while since I saw that comment from Grooseworx.

Im glad i wasnt the only one thinking Jax has some kind of military background. I dont think he was a child soldier but i do think he was a soldier. If the show takes place in the 90's or early 2000s, Jax could have been part of desert storm or the war in iraq/Afghanistan. Both conflicts had lots of terrible things happening especially with explosives/IEDs. His personality would fit too as I would expect someone in the military who has seen a lot of people close to them die, would be reluctant to let anyone get too close to them.

I’m still curious about the whole thing with Jax and being… seemingly have more out of bounds thing? I mean, he’s got keys to all the rooms, breaks the 4th wall occasionally, etc. Another thing i want to mentioned is how between all the characters, he seems to have the most hidden about him. He’s the only character we haven’t seen the existence of a room for him, the only character who we don’t know what happens when he holds his breath, and bunch of other stuff. and I won’t be surprised if that’s symbolism for how he presents himself.

Pretty sure that, in my opinion, Jax is gonna cause someone to abstract. With this theory, people often associate it with ragatha abstracting due to her episode being the 5th one (i think). However, i think a more likely candidate here is gangle. Whether it be tripping or a suicide attempt (they might have made her look surprised when the truck hit her to be more family friendly), getting hit by that truck after nearly having a mental breakdown due to the new mask is NOT gonna fare well with her mental state. Maybe ragatha tries to stop jax and we see her true side for once.

I think it would be with Kinger when he learns that Kinger was sane under the darkness. But not for a joke or for his enjoyment, but from unrestrained rage that reveals who Jax really is and why Kinger built the circus in the first place. Here is a hint… in a card game, a King and a Queen always have their own Jax.

Episode 4 was the episode where the mask of the characters falled and not only for Gangle! Ragatha was high enough to say that she really thought and Jax was in a such unusual situation during the adventure especially with Gangle that his act dropped significantly to the point he was actually genuine with the characters like Pomni during their exchange.

Jax is a weird thing for me in this episode. For all it's focus on Gangle, and for how much Gangle deserves to get seen and heard, having worked in customer service just... really made me unsympathetic to her. Logically, I fully understand and support her, but emotionally her attitude inflamed old work-traumas and even though Jax is a jerk, to put it mildly, I sympathized with him far more than I did Gangle. Jax is a terrible person, and even though I know he's doing what he's doing because that's how he can cope with everything, I still ended up leaving the episode feeling worse for him than I did Gangle, even though I KNOW that Gangle was just as if not more miserable and deserving of sympathy, at least by the end.
@justice8718
@justice8718 13 сағат бұрын
The difference is simple but obvious. Jax hides his vulnerabilities more easily and his feelings for others, but he doesn’t hide anything bad about him or others under a rug. Gangle is constantly seeking to take advantage of being irresponsible and mean by being out of the spotlight. One is honest and the other is dishonestly evil.

It's worth noting that the entire time in this episode after they start the adventure the only way they ever acknowledge it being an adventure is by recognizing NPCs, otherwise they treat it as if it's real even having them clock out and go to their cars to "drive home" wich is probably the point where each character had their grades assigned by Cain was after the "drove home" I mean they even talked about needing a destination driver for ragatha. It Definitely feels like this episode is meant to be a glimpse into the real lifestyle of these characters and especially the real life's of gangle (who mentions being a shift manager and the training tape implies she wanted to be a Manga artist) and Jax (who doesn't seem like the Jax we know suggesting this might be a hunt of what he has under his own metaphorical mask)

I don't know if anyone noticed or no one gave it any importance, but the video that Gangle put on Jax (that video constantly changing to different faces of Gangle and the music that reminds me of the Endless Stairs music from Super Mario 64 that the pitch seems to get higher and higher) seems really disturbing to me as a method of torture. I don't know how long Jax spent in that room but I doubt anyone would come out of there sane if they watched that video against their will for a long time.

I feel like the reason pomni is the main character is her honesty and openness, Ragatha isn't always truthful, zooble is disinterested so shes hard to talk to, Gangle masks so its difficult to talk to the, Kinger cannot hold a conversation, And jax is unreliable and dangerous to give information to. So it kinda worries me that the most open character (Pomni) isn't open to Jax because when we get to his episode he will have nobody to rely on.
