Why I think he can break the fourth wall: 1. I think he is set up to be an important character and can do this because of that. 2. All the characters have multiple abilities, so maybe it’s just one of the many normal ones he does. Plus he isn’t holding his breath. 3. It’s probably just a funny joke that goose decided to put in the show since his style is really cartoony and he’s based on the rubber hose style for animations.

All the breath holding skills are similar in that they do something silly. The only outlier so far is Kinger, since him glowing can be useful under the right circumstances. I strongly believe Jax' breath holding effect is something embarrassing. I like the idea that he becomes "cute" in some way. How about his limbs, body and ears get considerably shorter - which, again, can be useful to get through tight spaces - and as a side effect, he looks like a sweet little bunny as opposed to his lanky, cheeky look. This would practically destroy his ego, given what a tough guy he plays. The idea that people laugh at him or be able to mock him should be his worst nightmare. He doesn't allow himself to show even the least weakness or sadness. We've seen multiple split-second scenes of him with a sad look on his face which immediately get replaced by anger. My "shrink but look fuzzy bunny cute" hypothesis would also be of some value in story telling; he might be forced to do it while teamed up with Pomni and then he'll go "I kill you if you tell the others".

I like your theory about Jax becoming super fast when he holds his breath... BUT that very little time between him running away and just finished talking before doing so is too short for that to be the case. In episode 3, both Kinger and Pomni held their breath, and it took a few seconds before their own effects began. I personally think Jax might have his ears curl up if he held his breath, or his eyes would would start to pop out of his face.... I would also expect Jax to not have an effect from holding his breath and wanted to pretend he does to leave everyone guessing. (Jax has some awareness of the forth-wall, so I wouldn't put a pass on that).

@Shaze87 In the pilot when Zooble choked Jax he was technically holding his breath but while doing so his mouth opened and his teeth got really sharp and his eyes changed. So maybe when he holds his breath he can’t really close his mouth but he can’t open it and maybe his teeth get sharper and his eyes pupils change shape

Remember when he was strangled by Ragatha? It was almost reminicent of some older 2D animations in how expressive he is. I honestly wonder if he gradually becomes more 2D rather than 3D. I mean, if so, it would be interesting to see if he used it in an adventure. Would be nice to see the guy actually act selflish for a change. Then get irritated when people commended him for it. Think Jax has the power of rule breaker. It could allow him to pull up cheat codes that change his speed or allow him to disregard the rules Caine has given them when he holds his breath. It could also be that Jax, the creator or co-creator of The Amazing Digital Circus doesn't want the others to know stuff about him because he has had the ability to escape the whole time. It could be that all of his friends were moving forward in life, and to keep them around, he trapped them and himself in a VR game with Caine as the AI system to make it more interesting.

I actually think Jax is a NPC. He moves things along with adventures. Kaine may have actually lost track of the fact Jax is an NPC, since he has indicated in episode 2 that he can forget which are which. Jax therefore refuses to do anything that could reveal the truth, fearing being popped like Kaine has shown he does with rogue NPCs.

I think I have a theory. Whenever Jax is talking, his teeth remain closed and the only times they open are when in episode 1 when Zooble is choking him and in episode three when he scares Pomni in Mildenhall Monor.
