Regarding the counter to developmental theology around 1:32:00 : The development in Islamic theology cannot be compared to development in Chrsitian theology. The former was inspecting deeper derivations from the concept of tawheed, as revealed in the Quran and Sunnah. These debates also arose from a political context of the Mu'tazilites gaining more political influence during the Abbasid era, so the smallest issue had raging debates around it but is largely irrelevant now. For example, when Allah mentions his "hands" do we affirm them to be literal or metaphorical? These are hardly central issues, although many do still feel strongly about their opinions. However, this cannot be compared to the case for Chirstian development of theology which seeked to reconcile the contradictory belief about the fundamental and central nature of God over the course of 3-4 centuries. Simple argument: Believing that Jesus is not 100% God takes you out of Christianity. Believing that God was not speaking literally when mentioning his hands, makes you an A'shari Muslim.

Thanks jay! 2 Qs for the group: if Jesus is the new high priest and his body is the temple why does Ortho still use priests? Protestant brothers are telling me Jesus steps in on their behalf and we no longer need someone "standing in for God" when we worship? And 2: Jesus says in Sermon on Mount that he will not change Law and prophets one iota. But why do Christians not believe and follow much of OT law and code? OT is loaded with commands of not marrying foreigners, certain dress, certain incense burning and rituals...does Jesus negate this is some way I'm unaware of? Like he supposedly does with priesthood? I can't square these two. Thanks!!

@Keysar Efes Some Protestants would say: Apostolic procession hands down elders and deacons. But is it ever explicit in the bible that apostolic procession is for priests to intercede on our behalf to God? Again, the argument is that Jesus does this for us. Since He came we pray to Him and he is there on our behalf. I'm really at a loss on this one. I don't see where it's crystal clear in the Bible. I'm ok accepting Tradition, but others aren't. Does it hinge on tradition? Or are their passages I'm missing? Thanks, Keysar.

@Keysar Efes John 20:23? Jesus is telling the apostles to forgive. That's how I read that. He's telling them to make judgements wisely. But is it not clear in other passages that judgement is God's alone? It seems to me here Jesus is speaking of earthly decisions and relations. I dont see this as Jesus giving the apostles actual power of forgiveness of sins. Does this not imply then that a priest decides if my sins are forgiven, not God? That seems very wrong. I read it as other passages about forgiven your brother 70 x 7 times..or whatever the passage is. As fallen humans we should forgive eachother. The apostles should forgive and allow sinful men to stay in the church and faith. Or am i still missing something? Thanks.

chuckhough I could be wrong but I believe the early church openly confessed their sins to one another like to the whole church. James 5:16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” And eventually it become a hassle so they decided to confess there sins to the priests who was the representative practically for the whole perish. Like I said I could be a little wrong there, but might be something to look into.
