Austin Michael I heard him say in a number of his shows and interviews, that of course people expected a croc to kill him. Or a snake. Something in his zoo most likely. It was important to him that that not happen. He took precautions whenever possible, but he never slowed down. Gotta admire that, he was quite a caring man. And I think he would have preferred how he died to how people expected him to die. It was a kind of victory which I can see now, looking back.

If you think that getting handsy with an animal to teach about it and make people become interested is not “respect”, then you should know that not interacting with them whatsoever and having little exposure to the masses is what made up most of their bad reputation and caused many of them to become nearly extinct.

DID HE DIE? By foolishly grabbing a sting-ray from behind, an animal which defends itself by erecting its stinger to stab anything which attacks it from behind? Thought he knew a thing or two about animals. When you think about it, Steve Irwin made his name by harassing animals; grabbing them, capturing them in the wild just for kicks as they desperately tried to get away from him. Guess he got what was coming to him. Shame he left two little children fatherless in the process though.

@@susangillette7317 did Johnny wrestle with gators? Everybody has animals on late night, Johnny started that. But you never see any of the hosts grabbing the tail of a 9 foot gator

Conan did--with Steve, infact! Instead of an alligator, joeys, and a cobra, it was a reticulated python.

I love how Jay Leno seems like he’s actually interested and cares about the animals, the way he wiped the milk off that joey’s face got me. He paired perfectly for an interview with Steve.

This video had me tearing up, just by remember how amazing this dude was. I remember coming eagerly home from Kindergarten and checking animal planet to see if his show was playing. Then we lost him when I was in 4th grade. My childhood inspiration, R.I.P., you will never be forgotten.

Weird. I can imagine that day as well just like 9/11. I was coming downstairs. My wife made lunch and she told me that she just heard the news that he was killed. Then there were 2 24h runs of his show the next day and weekend.
