Props to Jay for actually having the segment focus on the animals. He asked good questions, listened, and only interjected when Steve was trying to correct his grip with the animals. The way that he simply sat with the joeys and behaved around the Cobra and the Alligator shows me that he respects the animals and has a respect for the work that Steve did. He did not even mind his jacket or desk having messes on them. He simply went with it and allowed Steve to take over the segment sharing his passion.

I think he had a natural intuition with animals on land, especially snakes, crocodiles, etc. My personal thought is that that same intuition didn’t necessarily hold up in the water. That being said, it was dangerous work and it is true that these things are much more likely when regularly being put in dangerous situations.

Jay Leno was a great host. He was so respectful asking questions to learn more about the animals and didn’t react negatively to milk splashing on his suit or the second Joey jumped in his bag and brushed his face a couple times. Austin Michael I heard him say in a number of his shows and interviews, that of course people expected a croc to kill him. Or a snake. Something in his zoo most likely. It was important to him that that not happen. He took precautions whenever possible, but he never slowed down. Gotta admire that, he was quite a caring man. And I think he would have preferred how he died to how people expected him to die. It was a kind of victory which I can see now, looking back.

When I was a kid, I always wondered why Steve would react like that when an animal would get angry or try to hurt him. Now I realize it’s because he respected animals so much, but also had such a desire to learn and teach about animals, that when he was showing off an animal and it would get mad or try to hurt him, he was praising it for doing what came to it naturally: defense and disgruntlement.

If you think that getting handsy with an animal to teach about it and make people become interested is not “respect”, then you should know that not interacting with them whatsoever and having little exposure to the masses is what made up most of their bad reputation and caused many of them to become nearly extinct.

DID HE DIE? By foolishly grabbing a sting-ray from behind, an animal which defends itself by erecting its stinger to stab anything which attacks it from behind? Thought he knew a thing or two about animals. When you think about it, Steve Irwin made his name by harassing animals; grabbing them, capturing them in the wild just for kicks as they desperately tried to get away from him. Guess he got what was coming to him. Shame he left two little children fatherless in the process though.
