You should read: The Late Shift: Letterman, Leno, & the Network Battle for the Night. I cannot stomach the guy.

Solid stand-up in his climbing years. Many don't understand what a huge shift to mass popularity and money does to some (most?) entertainers. I 'm not able to understand. But Jay brought a lot to comedy.

@@NeonBluePastaChef Whether Jay "sold out" or went mainstream like the haters say doesn't matter. He was number one in the ratings for over a decade and thus, did his job flawlessly. They all love Letterman and he became less funny by the day in the final years.

Regardless if you like him or hate Jay, He did his job. His job to bring money to NBC. his job was not to be liked by everyone. He held the Tonight Show in the number 1 spot when he guest hosted for Johnny. Later, remained Number one as the new host. Again, regardless if you don't like how he took back the show from Conan, the facts ratings dropped with Conan, and returned to Number 1 when Jay returned. Oh, before Conan lovers cry, scream and yell that he only had 7 months, and a weak lead in, NBC didn't care, they do not exist to pamper a talk show host in the hope they will win the rating war. Jay proved over and over he could deliver.

@@photomanwilliams4147 I predicted Conan's failure even before he took over {and remember. HE "stole" it from Jay}. Conan looked weird, acted weird, and was never going to be mainstream enough for the Tonight Show. The guy could be downright creepy sometimes, funny or not.

The great thing about Leno is that he’s a regular guy, not a comedian hiding behind a private reality. If you see Leno driving one of his classic cars through the streets of Burbank, he’ll stop and talk, wave and be happy to see you.

Steve Allen was the late night pioneer and Letterman used so many of his gags. Steve Allen would make crank phone calls to businesses and one time he called a company called Big A Cleaners and asked “is this Big A Cleaners?” They of course said yes and Allen responded “good I’ve got a big A that needs cleaning.

I hated Leno replacing Carson . . .for maybe a couple of weeks, then realized that he was a worthy successor, and that I was looking forward to the Tonight Show every day.

What a tremendous heart felt tribute by Doc - and he should know, along with Ed, after working so closely with Johnny for so many years. I'd say Doc also has no shortage of class.

I’ll give Leno and Carson this. They knew that it was about getting laughs, not getting applause. They weren’t activists like today’s late-night hosts.

My favorite Steve Allen skit was when he read the lyrics of the song "Hot Stuff"at an awards show and he had the straightest face which made it even more hilarious!

They both felt that the audience should not know for sure which side of the fence the host sits politically, and they were correct.

Steve Allen was the first host of the Tonight show late 1950''s, By the late 1960's he did two syndicated talk shows, first called the Steve Allen show, later just called The Allen show. Both shows being syndicated played different times in areas of the country. The theme was the typical talk show format. A band, guest on stage doing their talent, ending up on a couch as Steve sat behind a desk asking questions.

Jay Leno is very likeable. His Monday night bloopers were 👍. On CBS I watched Dave ( I called him Geeky) followed by Craig Ferguson ( I called him Cheeky). I liked Craig better than Letterman.

Leno’s manager helped NBC force Johnny Carson out. Years later, NBC forced Jay Leno out. Karma? Leno should have went to Fox and competed against Conan and Letterman.

Johnny Carson is a t. v. pioneer. A genuine t. v. pioneer would have worked in T V's infancy from 1947 to perhaps 1955. Jay Lenno was not born until 1950 and did his first T V show around 1976 or 1977. By that time T V was around 30 years already. Nothing personal against him, But he is not a pioneer. I guess they have run out of the real pioneers, So if you been around a while in T V you get a participation award like they give to kids now for showing up.

@baronvonnembles In any field or business, unless the meaning has changed in the last 100 plus years, A pioneer is the first to be there, to develop to invent, and the first and make it work.Too thin Baron. They are not pioneers. They used the word pioneers on the show to get the herd to watch.
