Boot camps don't work any more and I'd bet you wouldn't like to play for one either. All the old style coaches are gone from the league. Players do not want to be abused just doing their jobs. Winning a cup is luck as much as everything else. The best that we can reasonably hope for is a competitive team, we have that. If Berube goes in being crusty we'll go backward these kids are no where as desperate as players were in the old days. They can walk and go somewhere nicer to play in. They're already millionaires.

Time to get a fucking goalie who doesn't allow weak, shitty goals in high pressure playoff games, like Andersen, Campbell & Samsonov have all done. Woll might be that guy, but only a small playoff sample size. Watched Andersen coughing up questionable goals vs NYR, just as he did in Toronto. Shesterkin allowed no soft goals, but Freddie did more than once.

I have had discussions with friends for last few years. This team will not win with both nylander and marner on it. You can not have two soft players that want to only stick check in the playoffs occupying your top two lines. Which one brings more value will always have fans on each side of that fence. Do you value marner and his assists and penalty killing. But with this you also get a player that plays on the wrong side of the puck along the boards regularly, a player that come games 5-7 rarely shows up when the series gets tight and physical. Do you value nylander and his goals, fact that he can drive a line when needed, and come playoff time seems to be the player from the core four that can change a games out come But you also get a player that takes stretches of games off in the regular season, which aggravates the fan base more then any other player. A player that does not like going into the corners. And a player that still like to do flybys instead of going straight at the opposition and making a hit. So yea in my opinion one has to go and this decision should have been made years ago. I’m not taking away from their talent just the fact you can’t have both of them playing similar physical game and expect to win. Berube can’t change that. And under the system he will install I have more faith in nylander adapting then marner.

Jay, I respect your wisdom and experience however I'm really surprised to hear you Texas-two-step through the definition of what play-off hockey TRULY is, as do most others that are desensitized to what has been occurring forever. Play-off hockey has less to do with the players than the greater contributor that IS "play-off hockey". Teams don't dump their roster right before the play-offs. Teams don't rest a play-off dedicated roster to insert into the play-offs. Teams don't have alternate coaches for the play-offs or alternate equipment - things that would make the humungous cavernous transition that is regular season hockey to play-off hockey even more-so today. The lion's share of CHANGE always was and is - even more-so today than ever in the past - the officiating. There alone is the greatest most measurable change in this sport come the play-offs....more than ANY other sport. So please, let' call it what it is. You should NOT be able to finish at the top or near the top of a division with any consistency and then exit in the first round of the play-offs consistently while ALL teams retain the same roster, coach, equipment, etc. without "something else" having such a significant impact. This realization is supported by the endless history of controversial situations that are part and parcel of play-off hockey. Yes, the sport is faster today, has better equipment, better training/developmental strategies, etc. etc. however, these are more-or-less linear developments for most all of the teams! That, in-of-itself, makes officiating harder today than it has ever been in the past. The NHL needs to upgrade the quality of these officials specifically because of the aforementioned evolution this sport has made. It magnifies the fact that the officiating has simply NOT kept pace. The key indicator was back in 2011 when Boston absconded with the Cup over a FAR superior Canucks team based strictly on the gross incompetence of the officiating (not a Canucks fan either). This is a MAJOR issue that for some unknown reason we keep doing the soft-shoe-shuffle around!?! I look forward to Mr. Berube taking over in Toronto. I believe he is the right type of leader this soft team needs. As for the play-offs, he will need to develop a fast, strong, smart team that can both play hockey AND manipulate the officials - A.K.A. "play on the edge" - come play-off time. That is what it boils down to. There-in lies the true definition of play-off hockey. This is how "truth" often evolves: 1st - The integrity of the source/origin is attacked, belittled. 2nd - The concept is dissected, ridiculed, compromised. 3rd - In this last stage it is accepted by the masses as, "Well...everybody knows that!" I can't wait for Marchand to write a book. 😉

1/21 on the PP that is the reason why the Maple Queefs got eliminated, blaming only Marner for the elimination is typical Leafs mentality. Let him walk next year you’ll be in rebuild mode in 3 years right after Berube gets fired, it’s quite predictable

Nobody is solely blaming marner. He's getting criticized because he deserves it. Every fucking year when playoffs come that Kid pulls a disappearing act. He's softer than fuck, Whiney, and expects everything to come easy. He's completely unwilling to do what it takes to help his team win, and that's simplifying his game and growing a set of balls. How many times did he Give the puck away doing fancy spins and other mitch bullshit because he's afraid to take the hit? Chasing the puck up the boards and a bruin cuts it off, instead of going in there and getting it, or atleast TRYING to do so he pulls his fancy little mitch marner moves and it results in Bruins possession. We've seen it over and over and over again and it's fucking sickening. The Only goal he scored these playoffs he gave the puck away trying to be too fancy right before that the puck just so happened to find it's way back onto his stick...he was completley invisible each and every time he stepped onto the ice and that's usually the case with him when playoffs roll around. That's completley unacceptable for an 11m player who's thinks his shit dosent stink.

The teams that win cups have goaltending defense chemistry and guys that are willing to bleed for the cup . I’ve been watching hockey for over 50 years played it coached it never seen an organization that screwes there fans I live in Toronto and hate the organization look at teams that won cups.

Leafs didn't lose to Boston because they weren't physical enough or "too soft" . They lost because they couldnt score 5 on 5 or on the PP. Sure you can make the argument that their star players like Marner didn't play physical enough but that still was t the reason they lost.

So, what makes him different? Answer: nothing. A lot of this stuff is luck in a number of games since the late '70s could have easily gone the other way with a bounce here or there, but either way the other team wanted it more. Just sayin' The Red Sox waited 86 years and that was without a salary cap.

I argue and can support it that the Leafs HAVE HAD the right attutude for a few years. They have had a combo of bad officiating and rotten luck. 2024 was rotten luck. Key injuries to 4 key star players vs a healthy Boston team. Leafs lose by 1 goal in Game 7 OT. 2023 they went to Round 2 and ran into a very talented Florida team. 2022 they got ripped by the refs and should have beat Tampa. Goals that were called back that should have counted, they lost Game 7 by a 2-1 score. Tamoa just squeaked by thanks to the refs. 2021 they lose in 7 games and got screwed over by Leafs players who are no longer on the Leafs. So its hard to blame the core for this season. Toronto generally outshot the Habs. It was a weird series. One of the Leafs worst games was the game they won 4-0. Montreal was actually the better team in that particular game. In some games the Leafs lost the Leafs were the better team. It was a bizarre series. 2020 they lose to the Jackets fair and square. The Jackets beat the Leafs. Now we are back to 2019 and expectations were low that year and each year before. They ran into Boston who was a superior team. When you disect it the Leafs are far better than their record shows. KEEP THE CORE.

This is an odd move and the wrong move imho. Firstly, the stars ran Babs out of town and will likely think they can do it again. Hiring a more moderate coach to slowly bring the team ethos towards a gritty one would have been better. I would imagine that most of the players on the team are used to the country club atmosphere. MLSE will not be happy if the team stops playing well in the regular season and profits drop. I don't think you can get blood from a stone. The core, including Reilly, don't have it in them to battle and never will, no matter how tough tre and berube are. Now, if Marner is gone this summer, that changes the complexion of this discussion because that's one less 'non-playoff' guy to try to convince to play with grit. It'll be interesting to see who Tre brings in this summer. It'll likely be power type players if he can find them. It's possible that Tre will put the right players around the core, especially with marner gone, and I think it'll help immensely. However, the key point is to get a goalie. Going nowhere without that.
