And he doesn't use auto-tune like so many singers do today. He was in his prime way before I was born, but I always liked music from the 1950's-1960's. I saw him live a few times, in early 2000's, his voice was amazing.

Probably the key competition for Jay was Roy Orbison, who like Jay, had an incredible vocal range and could create an emotional response to his songs.

The late Jay Black also known as "The Voice" was one of the most naturally gifted singers of his or any generation. His range was phenomenal. One of my biggest regrets is that I never got to see him perform live. But his recordings will live forever. RIP Jay.

Maybe he was opera trained hes singing range is very powerful,I had a relative before who told me one of the best ways to keep your voice in good shape is to always sing on your own range of voice otherwise it can damage the vocal cords permanently

October 2021 We just lost Jay. I believe he was 82 yo. The world is a little darker Now. The man had an untouchable voice. No one could match it and if my memory serves me, no one ever tried to cover this song. I remember waiting for the PBS specials just to listen to him sing Cara Mia. I remember when I first heard Cara Mai on the radio. I was so impressed (enraptured) with his voice I had to go out and get my own copy (remember the 45s?). I still have it; no longer have my "stereo" to play it on but I still have the record. Jay and The Americans had other great hits, but IMHO this was their best. RIP Jay! 😪😢💔 Thank you for the great music!

I saw this PBS special in which he sang this live at age 63 ca 2010 and I was in shock and tears that this guy nailed it!! one of those moments, can he do it?! OMG he did it even better!!! Unbelievable. He had said he thought he was through in show business, had retired, then he gets this call to do this show....he got a lot of gigs on cruise ships and stuff because of that performance. Highly underrated star.

I grew up listening to Jay & The Americans and appreciated his performances many years later with PBS. However, not surprisingly I feel his 1965 live version was stronger, yet amazing in the 2000’s he could still hit & hold those high octave notes. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers, Frankie Vallie & the Four Seasons, Roy Orbison, Brian Wilson who was with the Beach Boys, Jackie Wilson, all had incredible reach from tenor to falsetto. It was a golden age of 1960’s Rock ‘N Roll.

It is kind of spooky but I was watching a sitcom yesterday and some one used the phrase "Cara Mia". Now I am 'only' 51, so I wasn't even born when Jay & The Americans made this song a hit in 1965 (I was born in 1969) but thanks to my parents who did grow up listening to the likes of Jay, Ricky Nelson, The Platters, Skeeter Davis, I kind of grew up listening to these artists as well as they played them at home and thanks to my parents I love these 'golden oldies' along with many other musical genres. Anyway, on my phone I have a playlist, a golden oldies playlist and when I heard someone say "Cara mia" in the show I was watching I thought, I must add this song to my list. This I did. I then looked up a couple of performances of this song by Jay & The Americans and came across your comparison here (for which, thank you). I then looked up Jay Black online to see what he is up to and I discovered - purely by chance - that Jay passed away three days ago!😢 Jay Black from pneumonia in Queens on 22 October. He was 82... Rest In Perpetual Peace and thank you for your music💔

Thank you Paulie for doing this reaction the way you did - really amazing singer! If you listen again, though you should note that he didn't sound exactly the same - he actually got better. Earlier, his vibrato was a little too fast, but as he matured he slowed it down somewhat and got more control. His voice was always wonderful, but it's incredible that he was able to improve, and that at his age his voice never lost it's Lustre and power. Beautiful !
