Jay Weinberg, drummer with band Slipknot, has to keep his drumming and physical fitness in top shape. Touring with Slipknot is the drumming equivalent of being asked to run a marathon, night after night. Playing a show this demanding without a warmup can lead to injuries, which could be game over for the tour. That’s why Jay chooses to take his V-Drums on tour - so that he can maintain tour-readiness and warm-up before every live show. Having a V-Drums kit on-hand is also useful for helping Jay and the band pen new songs and easily capture demo tracks on tour.
In this video, Jay plays along with a well-known Slipknot favourite, using the V-Drums Acoustic Design VAD506 kit. Jay plays a Slipknot track, with original drum track removed, from SD card inserted into the TD-27 module. The audio from the TD-27 module provides the drum sounds and are mixed with the Slipknot track.
Jay’s custom setup uses two VAD506 kits, combined together, to exactly model his acoustic kit setup as played on stage with Slipknot. Two TD-27 modules are tethered together to provide inputs for all pads within the kit. Drum audio is recorded directly from the TD-27 modules into a DAW. Mixing and panning completed in post-production, maintaining the authenticity of the TD-27 module sound. Video and audio recorded backstage at a Slipknot concert on January 24th 2020, Birmingham, UK.

Ya, and my parents tell me I'm hitting my kit too hard and they won't pay for a new one. I honestly hit it pretty normal, I mean I'm not a jazz drummer right, but I just think they think it's too hard, cause it's still quite loud, even tho it's a e-kit, mesh heads are still not really quiet.

I'm impressed by Jay's phenomenal playing! He's a beast! - Roland, you gotta work on that module, it doesn't sound right - The technology is there, like super amazing, but the module sounds like a really cheap kit - I'd suggest maybe trying a Superior Drummer root, with they're techniques for recording drum sounds - You still are an amazing company that makes sick stuff, but you gotta fix the sounds in the module or else people will buy cheaper kits and just plug it in a laptop.

Thanks for your feedback and your supportive comments toward our V-Drums technology. Definitely, playability and durability are of huge importance to us, as well as sound. We’d hope that for that reason, some drummers will recognize that to play with VST drum software, the super-fast triggering (low latency) and playing feel of V-Drums is as important as the sound. We definitely hear and take on-board what you’re saying in relation to the sound though. VST software and sounds within a hardware module are two different systems, each with their own unique benefits - but we do understand that many people are fans of playing VST software via V-Drums, utilizing the bigger memory available within a computer to access a wider of range of expressive sounds. In this specific case, Jay was performing with the sounds inside the TD-27 module, because when on tour he needs instant access to drum sounds for warmup prior to gigs. Also, when playing with these tracks, using any sounds other than the module sounds would have been disingenuous. We do appreciate the constructive feedback. Thanks for checking out the video 🙏🏻

that's his sound they programmed real recorded samples and it arguably sounds better and is more controllable and diverse. you can actually get any sound you wanted out of this kit there are no limitations just the quality of the recorded samples which are above CD quality so the human ear can't tell its comb filtered. the samples are the limitation. their cymbal sounds are recorded cymbals its whatever you want.

@rolandglobal
@rolandglobal 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry if we didn’t give enough transparency on how the audio was actually captured in this video. We initially tweaked the sounds inside the TD-27 before the cameras started rolling. The Slipknot track (minus drums) was played direct from SD card direct from the module and played along, while we captured the module audio and MIDI simultaneously. In post-production, we re-played the MIDI data back through the module, tweaking the sounds internally (having the benefit of taking more time to do so away from the time-pressure of a video shoot environment) and re-recorded the module drum audio via multi-channel USB. We then could mix the levels of each drum pad in a DAW - adding master EQ and panning in that final process. Our direction with the audio for this video was to use the internal V-Edit in the module to tone match the drums to suit the track, also trying to mirror the original acoustic drum tone of the Slipknot track as far as possible. That way anyone watching the video could be assured we were using the actual audio from the TD-27 module itself. Hopefully that gives you greater visibility on how we produced the drum audio for this video 👍🏻

All these people bitching about the sound have apparently never played electric drums... Yes, that particular package they used in this song didn't sound good. HOWEVER you can literally program them to have thousands of different sounds, different sets, different instrumentation... Etc. My guess is that they went with just the base, straight out of the box set-up and rolled with it. Sound engineering has become so damn easy that it honestly rarely matters what you're playing on if it's not straight acoustic. If you want a sound you can bet your ass you can get it with just about any piece of equipment. It's all about gathering the data and using the right output programming and equipment. I can make my $120 bass sound damn near identical to my $2400 signature series based solely off of what I play it through and what is projecting that signal. It doesn't play as smoothly and doesn't look as cool but the sound is still almost identical. Music instruments, programming, and sound amplification has come a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way since even the early 2000s.

Dude plenty of people have played electric drums. Most of the time they sound pretty good. This is horrid. Why are you all defensive about electric drum kits? Do you feel like it's a personal attack on you or something

I read that it's because Roland aims for ultra low latency (we're talking less than 1ms) over audio quality. Which I guess is a fine endeavor, but the whole point of drums is to make sound... At least you can trigger better samples with a computer, but you loose stuff like position sensing on the snare.

Roland probably doesn't put too much effort into their sounds because of the amount of people who just use EZdrummer or something like that with this module, but yeah the sounds aren't very good

I'm sure the feelings of the pads and the amount of detail and accuracy in the MIDI is top-level, but better off using 3rd party samples to trigger.

Many drummers tell us they like the durability, sturdiness and playing of Roland drums 👍🏻 We do certainly hear and take on-board what you’re saying in relation to the sound. VST software is a different proposition to the sounds within a V-Drums module - but we do understand that many people are fans of playing VST software via V-Drums, utilizing the bigger memory available within a computer to access a wider of range of expressive sounds. In this specific video, Jay tracked this performance using the sounds inside the TD-27 module, because when on tour he needs instant access to drum sounds for warmup prior to gigs. Also, when playing with these tracks, using anything other than the module sounds would have been disingenuous. We do appreciate the constructive feedback though, thanks!

@@rolandglobal Exactly! Have had nothing but the best experiences with E-Drums with you guys, the built-in sounds here on the TD-27 are leagues better than anything out there, and certainly nothing less than great, as there's only so much you can do with a module versus a computer, without making the module unbelievably expensive ahaha. Would love to see a partnership with people like GGD or Toontrack and build the ultimate E-Drums 💪

im not really a huge fan im an old man 55 im a pro musician. I remember when their first commercial hit came out Duality that song caught my attention but i really didn't get into them that much. recently ive been really not digging the costumes and the masks its sort of silly to me. this song unsainted is amazing i love the melody the opening chorus and the drums absolutely make this song happen. you can barely even hear guitars its vocals and drums. Jay is amazing his feel is so solid and hes super consistent. this drumset sounds better than his acoustic set is has more dynamics than a regular acoustic set. sick.
