Okay, so I'm now an old white man, so old, in fact, when Rapper's Delight came out I was in 9th grade and I that 12" was spinning all the time, had all 15+ minutes memorized in no time. That was my introduction to another genre, one that wasn't Van Halen, ac/dc, Hendrix, etc. And I should have been running with it never to look back but the Alternative stuff: REM, Pylon, Chickasaw Mudd Puppies, 10,000 Maniacs, dB's was hitting at the exact same time and it spoke to me more at the time. I was so happy to find something that wasn't that stagnant, revamped 60s-70s rock I was listening to so I never looked back from the Alternative and eff'ed with rap/hip hop more superficially, not deep in but hit the high points. I could have been there from day 1 but.....then that whatever it turned into in 90s took me pretty much away completely. Then the "Em" renaissance put it back on my radar. I was well aware of what Hov was doing in the late 90's into the 2000's but it wasn't until I got a hold of Magna Carta sometime around 2016 (yeah, I know!!!!) that it got a hold of me! It was bittersweet because I'm listening to something I can't get enough of, I've never played a record this much since my Sugar Hill Gang days.... I've come full circle, but some kinda bummed because I let this whole wonderful culture and movement go on all around me and can only spit the highlights out. Needless to say I've been devouring shit for the last 5-6 years and I feel blessed to be able to watch something like this so at least I didn't miss it completely. This man here is god-like in my eyes along with some of his predecessors like Krs-1, Nas, Slick Rick, etc. and, of course, contemporaries like Kdot and Weezy. We take technology for granted on the daily and I'm officially thanking all of technology rn rn for not letting me miss out completely on something that means so much. I know Jay-Z purists will scream Black album and Blueprint(s) and I get it for sure but this album is probably my favorite album I have ever listened to, all time, across all genres!!!!!

I have a lot of respect for Jay-Z as an artist and as a businessman. Of course, I think he's a better businessman than he is a lyricist, but musically, he's a genuine artist. He knows how to align himself with relevance and success, he's essentially a visionary. He has a broad scope of the culture and the demographic it appeals to, and he knows how to capitalize on those opportunities to be successful. But I think the thing I respect most about him is that with all the aforementioned traits that he has, he still seems grounded and humble. He's worth billions but he could sit at a bar and hold a conversation with a bartender, whether they know he's Jay-Z or not, and actually be human. Granted, I don't know him personally or have ever met him, but he gives off that vibe.

He probably found out by accident how powerful the brain is with thought..... Remember if Jay Z made the mistakes that almost everyone before him made when it comes to responding to what those who are somebody says about him he would not be who he is today. Very simple MENTAL moves made him GREAT!! Mr Carter has never been known as 10 times platinum album sales but he has more than Em, Nelly, 50tys, Wayne, Etc.... He mastered Michael Jacksons way of obscurity and mysteriousness.... Salute to him for capitalizing on the mental aspect of those who he needs to capture....
