What I love about Jayce is that his arc isn't a clean rise or fall. He changes drastically due to the influence of the people around him, at first seemingly due to their authority, but eventually we see it more as a response to their confidence. And he's never treated as entirely wrong or right at the various turning points where we see him. He rejects Heimerdinger to build the first Hextech, yet still holds his cautious nature in respect until he can no longer reconcile his desire for progress with his mentor's desire for safety. And the most genius part is that we're never explicitly told whether or not what he's doing is right. Nobody in Arcane is obviously right or wrong, rather they take actions they believe are in the best interests of those they care about and must face consequences, and I think Jayce is the best example of this.
@skipp3252
@skipp3252 2 жыл бұрын
I strongly disagree with the notion that Jayce's desire for pregress at some point exceeded his respect for Heimerdingers caution and thats the reason he ends up betraying him. I am pretty sure when Heimerdinger said they needed to work on the inventions for another decade Jayce would have worked on it for another decade although not being happy about it. Its only when he is forced to make the decision between staying loyal to his mentor and saving the life of his friend and partner that he acts against Heimer. At that point there was only one option left for him.

A home else notice Jayce &Viktor (in arcane atleast) seem to be an amalgamation of differing attributes of Nikola Tesla..? The lofty but benevolent ambitions the early health issues.. the inciting incident (Tesla fled to the balkan mountains to escape the draft &experienced what one could call a spirit quest of sorts) the T shaped hammer on Jayces lapel Viktoria accent.. the way Jayce &Viktors noble intent gets twisted into profit making schemes by more politically savvy individuals (Tesla was horribly exploited &misled by Edison) I feel like he could be a direct template for these two.. especially with the fact that Tesla in his later yrs was known to ramble on about arcane technologies that defied (then) commonly known physics &were deemed sorcery or fantasy.. a straight shot link to Jayces hextech obsession

I genuinely don't understand the Jayce hate all around. I don't understand why people expect him to be Viktor's babysitter. He gives Viktor free rein over the project, even removes Heimer from the council because of it, and helps him however he can while trying to do his other job and have a life outside of those two jobs. Viktor is an adult man that's responsible for his own actions, and the decisions he ends up making behind Jayce's back are... not great. They're not joined at the hip and neither should they.

I don't like the term "apologist" because it sounds like someone is trying to rationalize something bad or something. Just say a Jayce fan rather than a Jayce apologist. Last time I checked, Jayce never did anything morally rephrensible. Also, Jayce the Hispanic Himbo is Body Goals. And yeah, I'm an unabashed Viktor fan but even I got to defend Jayce sometimes when I see some unwarranted hate for the character. Fun fact, when Viktor upgrades from his cane to his crutch during the timeskip between Act 1 and Act 2, we see that his crutch is in the blue and gold colors of the House Talis, showing that Jayce played a part in helping with designing the crutch. Another great scene that showcases the complex and nuanced Science Bros relationship that Viktor and Jayce have is the scene where they're arguing about whether or not their Hextech should be weaponized due to the tensions between Piltover and Zaun. We know from the dialogue that Jayce had struggled with defusing the Jinx grenade because he was embracing the Poltician side of himself more than his Scientist side but Viktor almost effortlessly disarms the ticking Jinx grenade because he's firmly rooted in his Scientist side. The most significant part of that scene to me is that even when he sees and hears the Jinx grenade ticking, Jayce doesn't run for cover but stays there with Viktor, because they're ride or die. I really liked that scene.

My guess for why people dislike Jayce is that there's two groups 1) One group just doesn't get the story. They buy too quickly into the tropes that will latter be subverted and never look back. When Heimerdinger is introduced as a wise old sage, the image sticks forever and when he is expelled they see it as confirmation that jayce thinks himself too much. Similarly around all his other interactions. It just *looks* on the surface like the story of a golden boy becoming corrupt and forgetting his roots, so they feel that's it. 2) But the other group is more nuanced. Jayce is the only character in my opinion that's placed in *lots* of hard moral choices. Very often. I mean, each character has one or two hard choices to make over their line but other than that each has a pretty straightforward goal and that goal isn't for any of them "maximize goodness, for everyone". Vi wants to get powder back and that's mostly it. Jinx has a complicated one but she is crazy and totally not aiming for the general good. Mel is playing politics for her own sake (or at least we think that at the beginning). Caitlin is following just one case and her hardest moral choice whether or not to shoot Jinx. But Jayce is placed in A LOT of hard choices all the time. And they are choices that... don't honestly have a clear answer even in the real world. Your partner doesn't want to be the front face of hextech... what do you do? force him? The wise old man tells you to keep testing while your partner pushes for earlier results. What do you do? You can play the game of politics or you can stop having influence in Piltover. What do you do? There's so many hard choices he faces that it's kind of inevitable that there's not a big part of the audience which just says "NO! I totally wouldn't have done that in his place!" And thus, the tragedy of a character like Jayce. You can't have a character making hard real world decisions in a realistic setting and expect him to be very popular. Specially if he doesn't have some kind of awesome badass personality quirk (Which is how I think that Avasarala from The Expanse gets away with it)

What I love about Jayce’s arc in this series is seeing him thrust into these situations he has no desire to be in, told that he needs to take charge and do the right thing, but with the sheer enormity of the responsibilities he is given, it’s almost like he CAN’T do the right thing. No matter what he does, he’s always doing something wrong, he can’t please everyone, not even close, and he feels that responsibility, you can see how much it all weighs on him to not know what to do and feel the gravity of every time he feels he’s screwed up. And towards the end it culminates in his growth, where he sees all the children looking at him after what he did to Renni’s son. And that lived experience, having to look what he’s done in the eye, he then finally gains the self assurance to decide what he believes is right to do and literally tells his opposition he doesn’t give a shit what they think about it. Where he gains this sense of clarity where instead of feeling this unfulfillable responsibility to do right by everyone, he instead feels a responsibility to do what he believes is right, regardless of whether it makes everyone happy. Someone compared him to Iron Man a bit, and I agree in the sense that Iron Man’s and Jayce’s growth came from seeing the wrongs they’ve done in a position of power and leadership, using that newfound experience and perspective to make a choice, one that is rooted in their refusal to allow the people they’ve hurt to continue suffering because of their mistakes. Iron Man shuts down the weapon manufacturing division of his company and Jayce splits the city in half.

I bet the symbolism of magic being used to take a young boy's life was hugely impactful on Jayce. It was like looking into a dark mirror compared to his experience. For Jayce, Vi's lines about "he knew what he was signing up for, you didn't have a choice" is an inversion of the truth. Jayce knew what he was doing, he made the hammer, and the boy never got to make a choice about his lot in life

finally someone says it, I didn't join the arcane fandom while watching the series and I was shocked when I found out little to nobody like Jayce as a character. What I loved about him was that he initially appeared to be this stereotypical good guy with ambitions to do good yada yada yada but he nevertheless managed to surprise me like when he delayed the release of his new invention even though majority of his supporters wouldn't like it, preferring to choose peace over war, actually being good with negotiations and proving himself worthy to be in the council instead of him being just there due to Mei's influence, realizing the consequences of his mistakes, etc. Like Alex said, Jayce is one of the most humane characters in the story. He's not perfect, he's got his ups and downs as the story progressed, and those are some of the things that makes him so interesting since more often than not, he manages to subvert the usual expectations of his character. It's almost the same situation with how other fans don't like Mel because she stands in the way of the "VictorxJayce" ship. While ships are typically harmless, stuff like this in the Arcane fandom and even other fandoms are really a pain and can become almost toxic to an extent.

@@RevilloPhoenix I don't think they will ever *exactly* end up like they are in League of Legends. Arcane is an adaptation and not part of the main canon, so it isn't restricted to the games and the overall universe. Add to that, that the versions of the characters is the games are more like caricatures of themselves compared to the show. So in some cases, if the characters became like they are portrayed in the games, it would be a massive step back for them. Like Vi for example *POTENTIAL SPOILER FOR THE NEXT SEASON:* In the game Vi even says "Punch first. Ask questions while punching." If Vi ends up like this in the show she practically says screw Vander and everything he stood for. It goes against her whole character arc she has in Arcane. @@TurokRevolution Who knows? Vi is brash and aggressive, she's supposed to be. Also, such a line can be taken as a joke. I take the arcane as an elaboration on the characters, they are the same, just more detailed. Also, by the way season 1 ended, Jinx could have had a redemption at some point, but by the end she goes off on the deep end towards total crazy...which is how she ends up. Also, becoming an enforcer is something that could easily end up drifting Ekko and Vi apart. Considering that do to Jinx the conflict will blow up again and everyone will have to take a side...becoming an enforcer means we know which side Vi will be on, Ekko might hate her for that even without listening to her side at first. To be fair, the character I don't think will "end" they way they are in the game, but they have to reach that point during the show and theen they can move past it and get closure to have a complete story. The creation of the first plane was not reckless, dangerous sure but not reckless. The wright brothers carefully designed and created their machine to make it as safe as possible, even testing the plane themselves at their own peril. I think we also need to note that Jayce goes through a similar arc to what we saw of Vander in the early episodes. A man who had big ideals on changing things for the better and was even willing to use deadly force to see it through. But when he was there, on the frontlines, seeing the horror of that force, the horror of war, right down to having terrible and unintended consequences for children, both men realise that such a road is far worse than what they'd ever have wanted, and how much worse their actions made it be 😟

Jayce is also one of my favorite characters of the series for many of the reasons you described. I live how he cut through the posturing and bs of the politics and still managed to keep his head and ideas for the most part, even after the mistakes he's made. I fear however after the aftermath of the finale he might lose one of the key ppl that helped give him the strength that he relied on and may then actually lose his own inward foundation as a result... As an aside, IF Mel ends up dead or critically injured, she is the lynchpin that holds many ppl together; beside Jayce, her mother will lose her head as well, along with her humanity (personified by Mel, which was why she was banished, in her own words). Mel kept an eye on the parts of the council that Jayce could not and knew how they worked, and her along with that other lady (can't remember her name) they seemed to be a force of clarity as well as action in a forward thinking direction.

I initially didn't understand why Jinx shot the council room thematically, but I think I got it now. The ending to me is so interesting regarding technology and potential because it reminded me that Jinx (and Ekko for that matter) is a genius engineer, capable of understanding hextech and had she been given the same opportunities, could have contributed to the world at the same level of Jayce and Viktor. Interestingly enough, what made her both dangerous and *successful* was her reckless abandon to take risks and act unrestricted in service of those she loved. It was initially Vi's goal to make a better life for her and encouraged her creativity, but Vi's pain and grief caused her to fail to protect Powder. The struggle of those sisters mirrors the struggle of the sister cities, in which the undercity was neglected for so long by the higher ups of piltover. Technology has the potential to bring both progress and atrocity should it be used to actually improve the lives of those you look after. But at this point.. It's too late. No matter how much they broker for peace, or how much character development Jayce gets, or however many mistake they try to correct, it was *always* their fate to be struck down by Jinx, the personification of neglect and chaos. It's both what Hiemerdinger predicted, and the natural result of the passivity he encouraged which led to failing to improve the lives of the undercity. Jinx to me almost feels like a haunting force of nature and karmic justice. She spectates the other characters and takes the brunt of many of their mistakes and neglectfulness. It's such a shame too, because Jayce needed to make all of those mistakes to become the caliber of man he was by the end.

The hate Jayce gets has made me wonder if, as remarkably and consistently good as Arcane's writing is, this might actually be one of the spots they didn't quite land. Don't get me wrong everything about Jayce I think works really well.. but I feel like maybe they didn't do quite enough to highlight Heimer's issues and as a result people only see Jayce's opposition to him as a negative on Jayce. Heimer's apparent archetype as the wise mentor and the aesthetic of his character make the audience pre-disposed to trust Heimer and it seems like a lot of people simply discount Jayce's criticisms of Heimer as a result. Many people seem to even entirely miss that Heimer has his own arc in this series as he slowly is forced to connect with and have his eyes opened to the horrors he's allowed to come about in the city he founded via his absentee leadership. Jayce makes incredibly damning points against Heimer in the meeting where he forces him out and even offers Heimer a chance to finally explain his plan to address all these problems.. and Heimer just ignores it because he either doesn't see the problems or cannot comprehend why they are so critical to address with urgency. But for some reason this scene routinely seems to have people just completely ignore Jayce's points all together and hate him for tossing out the furry obstructionist grandpa. Jayce is a wonderful character and he is very often actually right about the things he brings up even if unfortunately he ultimately is also just not fit to be a leader. Though as he said himself.. he never even wanted to be to begin with. Similarly I feel like they didn't quite highlight well enough that Piltover's council pushing for peace, while a positive step in Jayce's development as he finally takes a stand, is not actually the morally perfect solution we should be championing. War isn't a perfect answer either of course but that's the point; the Council has through callous apathy allowed the situation in Undercity to get so bad over generations of corruption and exploitation there no longer is any answer to fix it that won't come with a terrible price. Yet as much suffering as war may cause, simply handing Undercity over to someone like Silco and the violent crime lords he's put in charge is only going to lead to a continuation, and expansion, of the horrific suffering for the actual people condemned to live in Undercity that we've already seen. It's why Vi's outraged by the council's willingness to negotiate and work with Silco since she see's it for what it is; the rich elite of Topside willing to work with a monster because it may let them maintain a status quo they benefit from and not need to address problems in their society that make them uncomfortable. Peace ultimately is not going to stop those kids from dying in Undercities drug factories or help the shimmer addicts cowering in the crumbling corners of Undercities polluted streets or save the poor wretches Silco's turned into shimmer-thugs literally drowning in body suits full of magical liquid super meth.. it just lets people in positions of privilege like Jayce wash their hands of having to see it or deal with the uncomfortable reality that they indirectly benefit from these tragedies that happen right next door to them every day. i

For Heimer's stuff, I imagine a lot of that will be dealt moreso in Season 2. Out of all the characters so far, Heimer seems to be the most divorced from his champion self, so I feel like a good chunk of his development is rediscovering his sense of wonder for invention rather than seeing potential risks. Especially since he's going to be with Ekko. I don't think Jayce's solution was ever considered a perfect solution, either by the show or by him. It was more of an emergency step Jayce took in order to ensure that outright war didn't develop between the two parts of the city. I think that's something people overlook when they express confusion in why Vi is an enforcer in the game or Jayce's solution. Maintaining the horribly unfair status quo is bad, yes. But if the alternative is to seemingly let things escalate between Zaun and Piltover into outright war, a war Zaun will inevitably lose, then what real choice do they have? The fact that Jayce was able to convince the Council that Zaun should be run by people in Zaun so quickly is quite chilling, because it means that most of the people on the Council see that entire part of the city as ultimately expendable. Most of them certainly aren't choosing to agree with Jayce because they think it's the right thing to do. So I have no doubt that they'd have very little qualms about simply burning that entire part of the city to the ground, especially now with Hextech making Piltover ever increasingly more prosperous. The tragedy of Jinx shooting the rocket isn't her preventing the two cities coming together, it's her making war seemingly inevitable between them. The only saving grace is that Vi and Cait have eyewitness accounts that Jinx is operating independently from Zaun, which could narrow the scope of the retaliation from the entire city to just one person.

I actually think that giving the undercity independence is the morally optimal solution. For starters, while the council might not have solved the growing problems of the undercity... the show fails to demonstrate how they caused them. As far as I can tell, the problems of the undercity were not caused by Piltover, unless they somehow created it or threw the poison gas at their mines or something. I think I need more context in order to understand why the council shoulnd't just wash their hands of it.
@troikas3353
@troikas3353 2 жыл бұрын
@@androkguz Piltover is the name of the whole city. Think of it like NYC. Topside is the upper area while Undercity is just the name for Piltover's slums which are across the bridge and sprawl down into the ravines. The polluted air, which caused Viktor's illness, in Undercity is a result of overmining Piltover does (the mines themselves being the ones Silco talks about being forced to work in when he was younger), the polluted and toxic water is a result of the waste draining down from Topside. In the original lore the ravines themselves are actually a result of a environmental disaster caused by Topsides merchants trying to carve an ill planned canal through the city for their economic benefit despite the unstable terrain. The wealthy just moved up to "Topside" afterwards while the poor were left to make due in the now ruined "Undercity". Though it's not stated if this part of the history is canon in Arcane or not. Topside effectively exploits Undercity for the raw materials in the mines and capitalizes on the desperate people living there to use them as cheap labor. This is why the counsel throws a fit at the notion of giving them independence; giving Undercity its freedom or even just improving it is a threat to their bottom lines. Meanwhile Piltover's corrupt police force routinely brutalizes Undercities residents, spurred on by systemic classism that's lead Topsider's to look down on those in Undercity (Marcus is the representative of this). This systemic mistreatment is what caused Vander and Silco's original rebellion. Peace isn't the perfect moral solution because Undercity only exists in it's current state because of the things Topside has done to it. Things Heimer's absentee leadership has allowed to happen in the 200 years he's been head of his cities counsel. Topside's prosperity is only possible in its current form because of that inequity. At the same time leaving a man like Silco in charge is just going to ensure all the same suffering and loss of life that made Jayce so sick to see is still going to happen.. the only thing it changes is this way he doesn't have to see it first hand. He can go back to pretending all those pretty stones people cut with his families hammers were the product of happy, healthy Undercity laborers. From a real world perspective it would be like the Mayor of NYC in the 70's just deciding they don't want to deal with the problems in its struggling burrows and just made them independent cities under control of whichever crimeboss had the most power in them. It's a terrible idea to begin with but that aside it's also a complete and morally bankrupt abdication of responsibility. The closest thing to a moral solution in truth would be Topside removing Silco and his Chem Barons from power and following up with a humanitarian effort to address the damage done by both him and themselves. The chances of that happening are admittedly low since it's, as stated, against the economic best interest of the people that would have to make the decision to do it. But even so it's what they "should" be doing ideally.

Dude this is a quite impressive essay. Though I do disagree with the last bit. Jayce made the decision to negotiate with Silco to avoid an all out war. Seeing how the undercity would 100% get the worst part of the war. He’s actually being empathetic towards the people of the undercity. Ultimately a war with the Undercity would not fix all the children dying, drug addiction, mob bosses, etc. it would actually worsen all those problems. And winning said war would only cause a power vacuum to form and more people to suffer. Specifically those in the undercity. I think that Jayces decision to negotiate was empathetic to the undercity. Maybe the other political leaders didn’t want to deal with the horrors and just wanted to be blind to them. Not Jayce.

An artistic choice I just noticed with Jayce’s meeting with Silco is having them meet at sunset. Jayce is obviously a direct counter to Silco in how they relate to the function of their cities. And with Jayce being the “man of progress”, always looking up to the future, he kind of represents the sun as this bright but volatile concept of progress. Silco represents the ocean, not just in his apparent obsession with drowning and his bleak past, but in that he has this identity of a cold, dark, unknown force that feels inevitable. Having their meeting take place at sunset kind of puts a visual “recap” on the fact that, despite them being so contrasting, they will inevitably meet and “compromise” with each other. I just kinda pulled that whole analysis out of my ass, so it’s probably me just looking too deeply into things, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was on purpose, given just how creative and visually impactful this show is…

I think a part of why some might not like Jayce is because it can somewhat seem like he went through an arc only for him to end up back in the same place of a status quo Jayce, meanwhile every other character seemed to have much more pronounced shifts. However Jayce’s arc is kind of on par with being the Prodigal Son, in which he ended up coming back to who he is at his core in terms of beliefs and over all staying true to himself, but he’s not the same naive young man he once was either. He’s become wiser through his journey back to himself, as wise as the pain of trying to find yourself after falling off the beaten path can make someone at least. Especially when it seems the world wants to keep you lost so they can turn you into a tool of their own design.

It actually made him one of my favorite characters from the show and made him FAR more interesting then before. Though I get the point you're trying to make. We do usually have the MC be the most "heroic" and "morally just" in media a lot of the time and that might've thrown people off balance. That being said for me personally anyway, I've always attracted to manipulative, cunning, and morally gray characters or "extremists whose ends justify the means" rather then the hero whose ALWAYS just and noble because I relate to that more.

I think he's a fantastic character. I mean, he's got flaws, for sure, but he's doing his best to do the right thing. I think the thing that irks people is how much things fall into his lap. Viktor, Jinx... They could have also done so much more good for the world had the opportunities given to the Golden Boy been bequeathed upon them. And, most of all, while he's up there floating in wonder, a little girl is desperately trying to save her family with the same tech and it ruins multiple lives, including hers. Neither she nor Jayce could have known the consequences for their actions, but only one of them really and truly suffers from it.

Wonderful Arcane video! Made me appreciate Jayce on a deeper level! I connected with characters like Cait and Vi more but its undeniable how well written he was as well! I'm so happy this show exists!

Great video, truly elucidating. It's funny because as a League player familiar with the core tenants of Jayce's character, I understood him to be a good person famous for his bad decisions. Decisions that- from the outside- made him look unempathetic at certain times and like an unadulterated asshole at others. But still, at the core of his character, I knew he was a brilliant scientist trying his best to do good in a crazy world. I knew all this and yet I _still_ managed to think less of him as I watched his journey unfold throughout Arcane. I never stopped the put myself in his shoes and really try to emphasize with why he was doing the things he did, I only reacted negatively when his actions hurt the characters I was fond of. It honestly helps me understand Viktor so much more. If I can't help but lose sight of the noble man I know him to be and I literally have all the cards laid out in front of me, It's easy to see how the schism between him and Viktor eventually grows to be so vast despite them being brothers in their youth.

Arcane does in 9 episodes what many shows can’t do in multiple seasons. Given how rich and deep LoL lore is, this show can go on for years and years and I would never get tired of it.

I've seen people shit all over him because he has no agency, but I think that's actually the point of his arc. He gets manipulated by those around him because he is still naively idealistic at heart, and when that gets challenged his entire worldview shatters and he decides to take matters into his own hands... which just ends up proving how detached he was from the problems the plot deals with. So yeah, he is a bit "spineless", but it isn't because of bad writting; he is designed as such and it works extremely well.

A story that feels as though its written by its characters rather than necessary plot points is always a beautiful thing, and Arcane smashes this out of the park. I hope this video not only helps those who've seen Arcane appreciate it more, but maybe entice new viewers who had bias against League of Legends to give it a try. This is certainly a special story, with characters who exceed the word special to boot. Great analysis AJ, I love hearing your opinions, there is usually something so poignant to them that hits extra for me.

One of the things that i love about him as a person is that(unlike other fictional geniuses with partners) he actually wnts his partner to have credit, he asks viktor if he wants to go on stage with him, he does everything he can to cure viktor, etc, hes not some egotistical genius he has an actual heart

This is an incredible analysis, thank you for sharing! It saddens me how overlooked and unnecessarily hated Jayce is by many viewers. He's a fantastic character who's just as carefully crafted, nuanced and interesting as all the others. Also, I've never heard any fan straight up call Viktor Jayce's 'brother' before and it honestly made my hesrt swell a bit. Love them and their brotherly bond so much ❤️
