Omg. I was always laughing at the "wait a minute, this isn't my bedroom" line so much in the lab invasion scene, that I never realized how adorable it was that they didn't throw each other under the bus. They were partners from the beggining. That only makes their fate in season 2 even more upsetting 😭

Another thing is that jayce is constantly protecting viktor. He first does it when Mel catches them, he says viktor is his new partner. The second is him taking full blame for the hex gem going missing thus making viktor get no punishment. And the third is jayce protecting the hexcore from heim because he believes it's the last thing that'll keep him alive. Jayce cares for viktor deeply and it shows. Also he gives his chair for viktor to sit in at the last council meeting.

so to add to your comment about viktor breaking the rules, a writer for the show actually tweeted this. "We have a backstory for Viktor that wasn’t made canon to explain how he got into the Academy. His parents saved their money to buy him a uniform and he pretended to be a student until he gained Heimerdinger’s attention. Instead of punishing him, Heimer made him his assistant!!"

It's a cute thing, but I personally would prefer the explanation of his original lore: "Viktor was born in Zaun on the borders of the Entresol level, and, encouraged by his artisan parents, discovered a passion for invention and building. He devoted every waking minute to his studies, hating to interrupt his work even to eat or sleep. *** In a bid to impose a level of order and certainty on his world, Viktor researched Zaun’s many accidents and came to realize that almost all of them were the result of human error, not mechanical failure. He offered his services to the local businesses, developing inventions that made them far safer working environments. *** Viktor’s inventions in automation reduced the number of accidents in the forge to zero within a month. Soon, other establishments sought his work and Viktor’s designs became common in Zaun, improving production with every innovation that removed human error from a process. Eventually, at the age of nineteen, he was surprised to be offered a place in Zaun’s prestigious Academy of Techmaturgy. But Viktor’s work had attracted the eye of Professor Stanwick of Piltover, who convinced him to leave Zaun and travel to Piltover’s academy instead." He actually earned his place by hard work and inventions, not just pretended to be a student. But since the Undercity in Arcane is written to be even less happy place then it was in the game, I suppose, there was no way to highlight Viktor's work before coming to the Academy.

An unnoticed detail I love about their relationship is that when they first met, Jayce wasn't awkward around Viktor. I need mobility aids too most people act awkward around me or ignore me and it is heartbreaking to know your own existence makes people uncomfortable. I think Viktor actually deals with this on top of making people already uncomfortable Topside because he's a Zaunite so it's double the ignoring or awkwardness from people. From day one Jayce thinks he's a weirdo but for all the right reasons: he's a nerd, sarcastic, funny and that's what draws Jayce to Viktor.

I think it's very well demonstrated by how he throws himself into his new role as a councillor and the task of ensuring that people are safe from his invention. Viktor is way less concerned with this and the possibility of it being weaponised (although I understand he's distracted by his immediate circumstances), but Jayce cannot bear the thought of people being hurt because of him. It's one of the bigger philosophical divides between him and Viktor. Viktor is simultaneously more reckless and more rigid in his pursuits - sticks to his goal and isn't overly concerned with the cost (up until Sky at least), while Jayce is a bit more adaptable of the two, wants to make changes, but finds certain cost of progress unacceptable.

He is definitely a feeler. I remember that I checked the Personality Database and his MBTI is ENFJ. At first I didn't believe it because there's the stereotype that scientists are often thinkers but when I paid a closer look it all made sense. ENFJs have Extraverted Feeling as a dominant function, which means they are in tune with other people's feelings to the point that they can neglect their own. And we see that when Jayce hears that Viktor is dying. He leaves Mel in the middle of the night just to go and see his friend. And you can also notice that he's touching Viktor's shoulder a lot in order to reassure him and let him know that he's there for him, whereas Viktor is more reserved when it comes to physical touch. Extraverted Feeling also plays a role in the decision making process. It means that when someone makes a decision they are taking into consideration how it affects other people. And we can see that in Jayce too. His inventions are made to improve other people's lives. The Atlas gauntlets are initially made for miners. He is also deeply affected when he sees a child die during the Chemtech encounter. So it is very important for him that he does what's best for everyone else, not for him.
@hawkins347
@hawkins347 2 жыл бұрын
@@justacat869 Yes! These are great observations because what really stuck out to me upon watching the show is how much Jayce cares about making people happy. The man is a chronic people pleaser, which is why he so often flip-flops in his decisions because he's trying to find a solution that will please everybody. He's very decisive in getting Heimerdinger off the council because it's the only way that Viktor can work on his cure, but at the same time he's very remorseful because he cares about Heimerdinger as well and can't even look him in the eye when he raises his hand to vote. He's constantly faced with these polarising decisions that will inevitably antagonise someone and boy does he struggle with it. It also contrasts very well in his relationship with Mel because while he's prioritising trying to do right by everyone else, Mel is actually the only person to take care of his needs, first professionally (by giving him advice, empowering him and giving him more agency over his inventions) and later emotionally as well (by comforting him and encouraging him to talk about his feelings), which is why I think they make a great couple.

I love how Arcane uses Shimmer as a way to really show the differences in thought processes of Piltover vs Zaun. For Zaunites, Shimmer is dangerous and addictive and causes chaos, but is also a source of medicine and healing and strength where they have very little (as shown in Viktor taking the shimmer from Singed, the medicine that Caitlyn gets for Vi having Shimmer in it, the glasses-bedecked gentleman that tells Caitlyn that he takes Shimmer so that he could be strong, and the Shimmer being used to not only save Jinx's life but also makes her super-powered). For Piltover, however, Shimmer is simply dangerous because they do not need the positive benefits of it. They don't need the medicinal aspect because they get to use actual medicine. They don't need to feel strong because they're already on top. So Shimmer to Jayce, to Piltover in general is just a dangerous drug substance that threatens their society because of the chaos it also causes.

Not to mention, they are using the so called hextech instead to gain the upper hand, both in conflict and trade. What do you think is the difference between those two methods of approach, into the future?
@chelbanna
@chelbanna 2 жыл бұрын
@@panda_invention1810 I think they really highlight what each society 1) values on a macroscopic scale, and 2) what is considered an acceptable level of sacrifice in order to progress. Jayce originally wants to use Hextech to save lives, but after the time skip we see that the first project that was actually completed was for transportation. Transportation is great! except it's being used by the corporations to move product faster so they could become richer. THAT is what Pilltover considered to be the highest priority for this new life-changing technology. Meanwhile, Shimmer is being used and isolated and refined to create medicine, which does have substantial side effects, but it allows the people of Zaun to feel strong, to keep surviving. Also, as soon as Pilltover had a single little explosion with Hextech they were willing to shut down the entire project, completely ignoring the possible benefits of the technology. Even the THOUGHT of losing a building or maybe losing a life was too tragic to continue with progress. Ironically, this ceasing of progress would have resulted in more deaths through the lack of the promised medicinal benefits Hextech offered as WELL as the immediate death of Jayce from his suicide attempt. Meanwhile, Silco flooded the undercity with Shimmer, causing a lot of damage to the people there through addiction and sometimes dramatic malformations. HOWEVER, overall I view the benefit as positive because of the health benefits that were pretty quickly realized and utilized with Shimmer, and for the psychological benefits of allowing the people of Zaun to feel powerful in a world where they've been pushed to the bottom. This is also shown in how Viktor is willing to continue his research even after the death of the girl that had a crush on him, whereas Jayce immediately abandoned his plan to stop Silco as soon as he had killed one person. Viktor mourned, he felt terrible, but he kept going. Jayce quit, even with Vi telling him "What did you think was going to happen?" Pilltover has not had to experience suffering and sacrifice, so they are unwilling to do it for progress. Zaun is well versed in sacrifice and so is willing to sacrifice much to move towards a better future.

@@chelbanna I love this comment so much. I also love the fact how both Piltover and Zaun with all their sides are represented by characters: Jayce, Mel and Cait for Piltover, Singed, Silco and Jinx for Zaun (Viktor and Vi are kind of stuck between the cities). Scientists, politicians and warriors, all different, all with the colors of the place that formed them.
@chelbanna
@chelbanna 2 жыл бұрын
@@jaakaart you said that transportation increases would cause "individuals" lives to be better with greater cash flow in the city as a whole. This idea depends on an understanding that the councilors and businessmen of Piltover are actually using their weath by spending it *in Pilltover*. The only way the wealth is passed around to the regular citizenry is if they deem to spend it with them. I find this incredibly difficult to believe they would do this based off of the complete disregard they give to an entire suffering population just over the bridge. They don't think about how other people's lives could be improved- just their own. Also, if the time spent researching and implementing transportation technology was being spent instead on how to make the hextech safer, they could very well have had Hextech marbles a lot quicker than 7 years and then could have moved their research towards the goal of really helping and changing lives as Jayce had planned.

TL; DR: The hate’s from the game’s fanbase but has yet to explain WHY outside of a “not in the lore” oneliner. And considering arcane’s creators have already said it’s not 1:1 following LoL Lore (which like DC and Marvel Comics and SW EU is a steaming mess of Retcons Itself), frankly at this point *I don’t care.* Full Rambling: Most of the Jayce-hate seems to be from “well, actually in LoL Lore…” when I’m pretty sure arcane’s already said they’re taking inspiration FROM lore but =/= going to do the exact same thing (and probably unsurprisingly for a franchise that splinters into side media, the “lore” apparently contradicts itself or gets retconned and revamped all the time depending on whatever event LoL is doing-via a comment who knows where. I don’t play league, I don’t exactly care to.) Meanwhile… all the Jayce-Hate is either one-liners that explain nothing, or blocks of text that if they ever get to the point of “in the LORE” it’s so poorly formatted that I inevitably give up. (And I tend to be pretty wordy myself, so that’s saying something.) But Jayce’s Legends Profile on the game’s site really doesn’t have anything that “enlightens” why Leaguers hate him so much as a (game-verse transplanted to arcane-verse) character And well. Arcane’s pretty clearly an “alternate reality” to “actually cleaned up and streamlined with better nuance, but won’t ever have These Storylines as Canon Lore because waayyy too complicated an overhaul.” I also think a lot of (game) fans aren’t mature enough viewers to appreciate the incredibly complicated and beautiful nuance Arcane’s writing is choosing to do-it’s taking beats from a classic tragedy, and even if it’s final season ends happily-enough (whenever that is in the future, I’m certainly not going to demand “more content!!” verses letting the creators take their time to continue to make something GOOD) I’d still consider Arcane to be Tragedy (a *real* one. Not the discount grimdark advertising as “tragedy” for a good decade now.)

@@anonymousfellow8879 I think you kind of touched on it but I'll add: Arcane is definitely targeting a certain demographic (as all media does). It is animated, based on a game, centered around 2 young sisters, depicts a lesbian relationship, I would be confident in saying that means most people who watch could be grouped into a "young progressive" category (these are loose generalizations of course), especially the ones who go onto the internet to discuss the show. That means many of the viewers are automatically going to identify most strongly with characters that have stigmas attached to them in modern western society (mental health issues, handicapped, LGBTQ, etc.). Jayce, by comparison, at least on the surface is the classic strong, confident, handsome, straight, white guy, so people are quick to see him as an oppressor of the other characters. That is why I'm really glad that they included him suggesting to Viktor that he should come on stage with him since it immediately dismisses the idea that he is going to become the cocky jerk taking credit for Viktor's work that we can be quick to label him as. He has his flaws for sure, but I think that people are much quicker to judge him harshly because we are, naturally, relating him to stereotypes in our world.

I like that this show really lets them have their distinct, separate journeys from each other while still keeping their friendship central to their story (and I like the sort of metaphor that Jayce the extrovert has a journey about how he needs to deal with the outside world, with his responsibility to others, and Viktor the introvert has more of an intraspective journey dealing with his mortality and legacy). When you’re friends with someone, especially really close friends, you can live totally separate experiences from each other, you may even have incredibly restricted understanding of what the other friend has been through when you weren’t together, but you still trust them. You can see this when Viktor asks Jayce to destroy the Hexcore, Jayce objects briefly, wondering about how he’ll survive without it, but when Viktor repeats himself, just tonally emphasizing the gravity of what he’s asking, Jayce relents and assures Viktor he’ll do it, he doesn’t ask any more questions even though he has no idea what’s happened that would cause Viktor to make this request or why he can’t do it himself, but he TRUSTS Viktor so much that no informational context matters, the only thing that matters is how Viktor feels about it. And on Viktor’s end, to ask someone to do this at all is just a sign of how close and trusting they are together, that Viktor doesn’t feel the need to convince Jayce to do it, that comes back to this thing of ”Jayce will understand”, ”if I tell him to do this, he will respect my choice.” An interaction like this is also very exclusive to friendship, if they were family, you’d imagine that conversation going differently, like imagine if Powder asked Vi to destroy this thing that could save her life, you think she’d do it? I highly doubt it. With family there’s often too much closeness and attachment to accept a request like that, but with friends, there’s often a degree of separation, a respect for each other’s independence that’s just enough to where you may trust your friends more than you trust your own family. I can speak to that and I’m sure many others can, that there are things I will feel a lot more comfortable sharing with my friends than with my family.

One of the things I really liked about their relationship: if you know anything about the games, you know that, in the future, Viktor is a crazy scientist hellbent on progress at any cost, and he amd Jayce are actually enemies. So it would be so easy for the show writers to make him into a traitor from the start, for him to be using Jayce and planning on stealing his hectech all along. Buut they didn't. Viktor was a legitimately good person and a good friend to Jayce, but the circumstances slowly pulled them apart. Not completely (yet), but we can certainly see how that relationship evolved into what we see in the games (even if the show doesn't follow game lore 1 to 1)

But in the game lore it's VIKTOR who was the main scientist and who cared the most about people (even after he lost his humanity and become a cyborg - he did it only because he thought emotions cause people to fail and hurt others), who did all the invention. While his inventions were stolen by people from Piltover and Jayce did not help Viktor to prove that. It was JAYCE who destroyed the shelter where Viktor was trying to save lives of people poisoned by gas explosion. It was JAYCE who was selfish and hot-headed traitor of their friendship. WDYM show writes could make Viktor a traitor using Jayce? No, they could not. They didn't make Jayse an asssss-whole from the very beginning - yes, but Viktor was not a traitor or a villain even in the game lore. The whole time, I was wondering "Why do they even care? Its just a personal shift in professions." Viktor and Jayce's case is more extreme because Viktor is effectively incorporating "fantasy heroin" into his experiments, while his BFF is a counsel member, proactively trying to destroy the drug trade. @@МарияСизова-г9м I'm gonna nerd off, I also like how these aspects of the characters personalities were translated into the show from the lore in a much more nuanced way, Viktor is very selfless and that does make him able to help people in the end, but it's also a negative in so many ways, he operates in this mode of "I have nothing to lose" for the whole show, which I think a true hero would take pride in himself atleast a little bit, which makes him pretty grey. It's very "I will install a ventilation system in the undercity to make up for the air *I* have wasted" We saw that his selflessness makes him shut out and act out in a dismissive way toward people who are interested in him, like we saw with Sky in the show. He can't fathom where anyone could even get the insentive to want to talk to Him, it's why he dedicates everything to his work, the fact he can contribute to something glorious external to himself gives him a reason to live. It's sad and really not admirable at all. With Jayce, him being a little entitled and having a big ego is something that was kind of present for the entire show, but Arcane Jayce is egotistical in a very naive way, where it comes off as kind of cute like he believes in himself and is so sure that he's going to change the world and people look up to him and his optimism, but present day Jayce in the lore is like obnoxiously arrogant, the kind of guy who refuses to listen to anyone but himself, despises civility politics. When I first watched Arcane I thought that Jayce was acting pretty out of character, did they just to shovel a character into the hero role? But then I thought oh obviously Arcane is a prequel show even the characters personalities are due to change. Jayce spent the ENTIRETY of season 1 acting as the pawn of those more experienced than himself (Heimerdinger, Mel, Ambessa, even Viktor in act 1) being told what to do and being swayed in random directions with no agency. At the near end of episode 9, Jayce just blurted out to the council "With all due respect I don't give a sh!t what any of you think of me anymore" and when I heard that line it clicked in for me him realising he's completely lost agency gave him that attitude in the first place, which yeah that would probably turn a person bitter and it makes me sympathise with him a little bit more.

@@dubwubwubstek244 I would also like to point out that in lol lore Jayce considers Viktor to be the only one as smart as he is. So while thinking you are the smartest person in the room is arrogant , it does not mean it's not true. And we need to consider that the personalities of the characters in the show are 15 years (give or take ) before the current lore , a lot of sh*t can happen that changes a person. Also , if you read the lore ( and understand it /not just face value ) you realize that neither Jayce nor Viktor are villains , it's just a matter of perspective ( what are each of them willing to sacrifice in order to get what they want.

@@Afmedic85 you can say that you don’t like a ship without being homophobic about it. Especially when it comes to a show/fandom where there is a lot of LGBTQ+ representation that doesn’t even have to be explicitly stated (ex: Vi and Caitlyn’s budding romance, the queer undertones to a lot of the characters like Vi, Caitlyn, Viktor, and all the characters who are designed in gender non conforming ways). I think maybe you should realize the audience of what you’re commenting on and also think: is this going to help anyone? Am I sharing a hateful or misinformed opinion? In this case the answers would be no and yes respectively. Being LGBTQ+ is not a trend or a choice, it’s something you can’t change about yourself and it’s something that people are often treated horribly or less than because of. I’ve seen a lot of people who are not LGBTQ+ in the arcane fandom complain about people thinking the characters are LGBTQ+ when the creators have confirmed it. No one should have to explicitly state their gender or sexuality for you to believe them (which based on your mockery of the community by adding random letters and an equation into the acronym I doubt you would believe or respect them anyway) or respect them. Our community shouldn’t have to resort to pieces of media that fetishize us to see ourselves represented in these characters. In my opinion it is sad that you found a wonderful video analyzing these two characters’ relationship (and yes, while they do not get together canonically you can’t deny that there are times when there is a hint of something more could happen, you could call it bromance or you could call it what it is: a deep bond that could develop in any number of ways), took a funny comment that just reiterates something one of the characters said (yes, Viktor could be straight, but as there is nothing in the show that confirms or denies his interest towards anyone of any gender we can’t really assume) and took that as an invitation to be rude. If you had blue eyes and not brown eyes and I said “it’s so annoying to see weirdos with blue eyes in things. Just because having blue eyes is a trend doesn’t mean it has to be in my brown-eyed media. Go back to your space where everyone has blonde hair and blue eyes” and said space was fetishization of blue eyes. I just hope that no one treats any of your differences the way you’ve treated my communities, as it’s not a pleasant feeling and nobody deserves that kind of disrespect and invalidation.

at 8:17 when you mentioned that mel had something to prove to her mother, i got chills! it never occurred to me that a big reason why mel let jayce and viktor break in to give them a chance was because she wanted them to succeed, specifically to show her mother that she underestimated her. after watching your video analysis on mel, now it all adds up as to why she was willing to let them risk everything for a breakthrough-- she wanted to show her mother that casting her out was a mistake and that piltover could be successful, and quote, "be put on the map" no matter the risks. before i watched the analysis, i had just believed that she wanted piltover to be successful, but she also wanted to prove so much to her mother. something else i find intriguing is that mel, jayce, and viktor were all three underestimated by people at some point in their lives, and i think that's so unique to each character and their relationships with one another. they all had their own different background reasons for risking their statuses for the breakthrough of hextech, however that allowed them to end up in the same place as allies

If you think about it some more Viktor is actually willing to take risk. It only increases throughout the show because his life depends on it, and it's so sad. One of the writers mention how Viktor actually went to the academy till Hiemerdinger noticed Viktor wasn't a student. Adding onto more of the risks... he realizes how Jayce now prioritizes other things besides Hextech, so he takes bigger risk by using his time to find a cure/extend his life. When that doesn't work, he goes to Signed for help, using shimmer (another leap) till accidentally killing Sky he realizes he's doing too much 😭 I love both Jayce and Viktor sm, I loved watching this and u posted it on my birthday :D

Kind of a shame we didn't get to talk about the scene with Jayce and Mel in the process of sleeping together that keeps cutting back to Viktor in pain, but that's way more of a cinematic theory and themes thing then a psychological thing, of course. (I LITERALLY yelled at my screen the first time I saw that sequence though. Especially the end bit with Mel waking up to an empty bed, that direct cuts to Victor in bed in the exact same position with Jayce next to him. Like "OKAY I active tried hard to see these two as platonic friends you SHOW. You're specifically asking me to think about these three in the context of Jayce's split intimacy and affection damn it! YOU'RE the one making these very direct connections/themes/parallels!" Like it COULD obviously still be wholly platonic. 100%. But after scenes like that, MAJOR side eye on anyone trying to claim that a queer interpretations would be "out of the blue" or what have you. >.> (I mean Viktor is pretty much a perfect poster boy for the ways in which ableism, and queer theories of bodily control and identity could intersect already. Disability studies and queer theory are good buddies with each other way more often then one might think. Would love love love to see more specifically trans and chronically ill folk dissect his character arch. =o)

I think the biggest issue with Jayce and Viktor is that they come from such radically different places and they talk a lot but they don't really communicate. They're friends and partners but they never actually developed a deeper understanding of each other so when Jayce just decides to delay things or stop production on a whim he doesn't care that it hurts Viktor and makes him feel powerless and when he starts locking down the undercity he doesn't care that he's isolating his partner even more by making him feel like an unwanted outsider while also making sure their inventions won't go to help the people who need it most. Of course Viktor is also to blame, he never speaks up or tries to get Jayce to reconsider. And given his failing health it was pretty clear he just wanted to leave a mark and rush his research out so that he could witness people from the undercities lives improving within his limited life time. Which is both selfish and noble really. So many characters in this get screwed over by their own misunderstandings and the unpredictable results of their best intentions

Jayce chasing to help people, which results in him making questionable choices with big consequences. While Viktor is more hellbent on progression, and his obsession with experimenting is one of the reasons on why he is pulling away from Jayce. Its such a shame that they will be enemies eventually in the future, but the worst part is that it works. I can't wait to see how season 2 progresses this. Amazing video, as always!

I think it's interesting that Jayce/Victor in episode 3 were gambling on figuring out the secret of the crystal, even though they knew it was premature. At the exact same time, Powder gambled on the crystal to save her friends/family even though it was premature. For Jayce/Hector it paid off and they were heroes. For Powder the outcome was disastrous and she was universally reviled. But both sides made the same decision, with the same risk. It's just that Powder was unlucky while Jayce/Hector were lucky. That's all it took to form a villain out of Powder.

Viktor and Jayce get held up as “cautionary tales of going too fast without caution” but…I disagree. They’re the product of an already desperate situation caused by centuries of exploitation and willful ignorance. If Jayce took Mel’s Advice over Heimerdinger’s during his progress day speech, even if they couldn’t reverse Viktor’s illness Viktor could’ve at least been at peace with the knowledge that his Dream of helping the undercity was truly becoming achievable. And despite Jayce sometimes making purchases in the undercity, Caitlyn made more of an effort truly Seeing them than he did-Jayce cared deeply about Viktor and wanted to improve lives, but he never spent time there. He was always in the lab up until Mel made him realize if he wanted to keep control over his and Viktor’s technology, he had to tread carefully (which being a councilor gave him the power to do; unfortunately he also got swept up further into Piltover’s classism instead.) And Viktor has always been socially anxious to the point of being a near-isolationist. The only real bonds he made that we know of are with Jayce and Heimerdinger-despite Sky being someone from his same background that he knew since childhood. This had a detriment effect when Viktor’s already shortened lifespine had its timetable moved up, and Jayce got swallowed into Piltover’s Classism (which was NOT Mel’s intention; Heimerdinger preached caution and responsibility, but Heimerdinger’s version was to Piltover’s and Zaun’s detriment. Mel only intended to provide A Way (perhaps not the BEST way for Jayce and Viktor to keep control-moreso Jayce than Viktor, as Jayce is comfortable being the Face so Viktor doesn’t have to. She may not be a scientist, but she’s still as involved as she can be (and sees them to TurnTheShip before Piltover becomes another Noxus-THAT is what she “gets out of it.” No real advantage, just a way to prove ideals WORK.) Now. Heimerdinger. He’s a Piltover Founder, and has been on its council since its founding. He even admits to Ekko later on that it’d been “some time” since he truly visited Zaun. And for as horrible as Zaun’s Conditions were with Vander and Grayson serving as its protectors with a shaky truce (that Piltover never truly held up, but these two were doing their best) and how much WORSE things got following their deaths with Silco and Marcus in charge of Zaun and the enforcers (but Silco really in charge of Marcus)… Silco reminds us viscerally how BAD Zaun’s Conditions were thanks to Piltover’s “progress”. And that’s all on Heimerdinger. He grew complacent and rolled over to the corruption of the House’s Whims. Caution is for HIS comfort, not to save lives. Even without Jayce and Viktor’s hextech as an available weapon, Heimerdinger’s neglect and Piltover’s blatant exploitation of Zaun is what created those issues to start with. You can’t preach “caution” when you’re already out of time. It just becomes complacency and allowing systematic oppression to persist (and he was there from the start. He didn’t inherit it like Caitlyn did, or benefit indirectly like Jayce did.) Mel, Viktor, and Jayce (initially then relearned the hard way first hand on his raid with Vi) all recognize that-they’ve been out of time for Caution, and Heimerdinger’s Caution only made Piltover wealthier at the detriment of Zaun until it really was too late to avoid full-war verses many violent skirmishes.

Preface: This is loosely tied to Jayce and Victor, but it's mostly abt a comment that was mentioned in the vid For some reason that moment where she said "Jayce is never really afraid to emote or express his sincere feelings, I wish this was something more people did" really hit me in a place and kinda made me feel guilty somehow for not ever being 100% open abt my own emotions...that's been something I've wanted to do for so, so long, but could never fully commit to, I scare myself with "what if's" and stay complacent in a bubble... I had a really heartfelt convo with a friend of mine in the middle of class, and I got kind of scared for her since she started to cry in that exposed area, but she felt no shame abt it and was comfortable with letting go and allowing herself to really feel what she needed to in the moment. It kinda shocked me, but it made my respect rise 10 fold for her, and it meant so much that she opened up to me in that way - I wish more ppl too, me included, opened up like this.

( Sorry, my english is not super good ) I saw both this and Mel's video and I LOVE your reactions. The beautiful thing about Arcane is that all the characters have a wonderful expressiveness, you can see emotions in their faces, they really seems like real people. Now, here in this video you said how emotional Jayce is and I completeley agreed with you, that's why sometimes he seems a bit..off. I'm referring to his relationship with Mel in which she seems to develop a love for him, but they way he looked at her, or talked to her it's..strange, like he's physically with her, but at the same time he seems to be somewhere else. Almost everytime. It's strange because she 's supposed to be his lover, when he said "nothing feels impossible when I'm with you" i didn't felt the emotion in Jayce's words and expression, that was really strange, like if it wasn't totally true. As soon as he interacts again to Viktor his eyes lights up again, and i know he's his best friends and obiously he prefers to talk about science than politics but at the same time..why you don't look this same way at your lover? I never saw the hope in his eyes, or the affection when he looks at Mel, if not in act 1 the first time they interacted and at the end of the series, when they won the vote for the Pace. For me, this is a bit confusing because i can't really understand this situation. What do you think? Maybe a friendly rival but not much else. 😂 While Jayce said they were friends and Viktor was the only one who related to him. But yeah I’m glad they altered it ☺️❤️❤️

The section discussing how Jayce expects people to like him reminds me of myself at work, when we need a customer to like us my supervisors will frequently have me talk with them. I used to be super confused by this until I asked and they said that the customers like me. Several years have passed customers still like me and I still don’t understand why

I love how you brought to light just how deep the bromance between Jayce and Viktor was and I love all of the arcane discussions you did! They were amazing and you went into such detail and pointed out things that I didn't catch while watching the show. Great job again for another great video :) If I can make a suggestion, I know that it's really self-explanatory, but I want to hear your view on it, can you break down the movie Coraline???

Great video! Thanks again for your analysis. Their relationship is very strong and powerful. In the Arcane fan community, there are also many people who would like the two of them to be a couple. I can certainly understand this idea, because their relationship shows bonds that can lead to a strong friendship or even more. But indeed, I still wonder how Viktor mentally changes due to the hex core. But perhaps it's too early to theorise about this, as it will be explored further in future seasons.
@hawkins347
@hawkins347 2 жыл бұрын
I think these two work best as friends, to be honest. If you watch their interactions more closely, there is only a very specific set of things Jayce can talk to Viktor about and that's their research, however, anytime other matters come up, a conflict arises. They only get along so long as science is their primary drive. There's a reason Jayce goes to Cait or Mel to share his happiness or worries/doubts. Mel is a much better partner for him, in my opinion, she seems way more supportive of him emotionally and especially professionally.
@Flowery1991
@Flowery1991 2 жыл бұрын
@@hawkins347 I agree, that Jayce and Viktor work best as friends. And good point you make, that they don't have many other things in common apart from science. I just can understand, why people could think there could be more between Jayce and Viktor in some scenes. Perhaps there is potential that is never further explored. Also Jayce seems very straight due to his relationship with Mel. ;-) I find that relationship to be particularly interesting, because I think that at first Mel just uses her charms to influence Jayce even more (for political matter). But by the end of season 1, especially when her mother shows up, Mel seems to really care for Jayce.
@hawkins347
@hawkins347 2 жыл бұрын
@@Flowery1991 I wouldn't say that being in a straight-presenting relationship means he's straight necessarily because bisexuals and pansexuals exist, but at the very least it doesn't seem like he views Viktor romantically. His interactions with him come off very much like his interactions with Cait to me and we know those are very platonic. It just seems to me that a relationship with Viktor could potentially be very toxic in the long run. He's very much in Singed's "we can be loners together" mindset, but Jayce isn't a loner. He's an extrovert with a life outside of the lab and Viktor seems to take issue with that and comes off as slightly controlling to me. Especially when their philosophy starts diverging after he becomes a councillor.

I think maybe you also missed or maybe it wasn't relevant to the video how Viktor was being overshadowed by Jayce I don't think he was entirely ok with it but he was too timid to show it, there was one scene where he is covered up by a cup with Jayces face on it that I think exemplifies this, I think Jayce while has that first inclination to have him along with him it takes very little to get the idea of him like all Viktor says is uhh I dunno. Jayce is the face of progress but they're both the people behind it. It kinda feels like Viktor is being neglected and hidden away even though he is later in the one who is most focused on the work. Idk if I explained it right but I thought that part of their relationship was interesting but not.mentioned.

@@panda_invention1810 Did you read my comment? I referred to that part of the video, there she said "he doesn't want that at all" and that Jayce is trying to share it, but my point is that just cause Viktor is hesitant it doesn't mean he doesn't want it and just cause Jayce asked once doesn't mean he is doing everything he can to include him, even if he didn't want to do public speaking, just having him there. It was even something they did at the end when he went to speak to the council, he had him with him, but he had to grow to get to that point.

@@SillyNep so you want to hear the full sentences like, 'he has an insecurity complex because he is handicapped' or something that could highlight the importance of brand image to the public, between the lines of: 'it is not a good idea for a handicapped person to be the face of a high-tech brand, not to mention that he is raised in the undercity'. All the cruelties and realities of the world we live in, I guess.
@SillyNep
@SillyNep 2 жыл бұрын
@@panda_invention1810 Dude, did we watch the same show? Yeah maybe it would not be the best received but the point is to do what is right, and if her claim is that he wanted to include him but Viktor just "didn't want to" what relevance does his handicap have? We are talking about their psychology, if Jayce was as determined to include him as the video implied he would have worked on a way to do so, instead he is on the back working hard for the glory Jayce, they started out as equals but Jayce rose to the top and Viktor is hidden away and Jayce is hardly doing anything to help him out of that beyond asking once and nothing else. My point isn't that he should have done this or that, he can be a flawed character, but what I was saying is that that flaw was not acknowledged in this video and I thought it was interesting to discuss it, like, why are you so against the idea of it being brought up? I don't think Jayce is some kinda villain either I know he is a complex character, but its pointless to pretend that wasn't an aspect of their relationship when the way it was presented was pretty blatant. (Viktor literally in the shadows, the face of the golden boy covering him up completely) Ps. You know what was also not well received at first? Hextech, the point of their initial goal was to change that paradigm.

I don't agree that Viktor should have held back on telling Jayce how he got to where he was without the same resources. It served two purposes, which are a big deal. 1. Viktor isn't bragging or being competitive here. He's anguished by this. He was alone and did it alone because no one believed in him, which is how Jayce feels right now. He feels like his mother has forsaken him, his patron has forsaken him, the council had forsaken him, so did Heimerdinger. Viktor telling him this reminds Jayce that he does NOT need their approval. This is reinforced with the line of not asking for permission. 2. Jayce's strength and flaw is he's arrogant. He knows his Hextech will work, but is so overwhelmed by his ego being shattered that Viktor essentially tells him "dude, look what you have to work with, you really going to give up here?". Also reinforced by the line about changing the world.
