Awesome video. GREAT to see what is under the hood. I actually did some some strategic screenshots from a few people on YT who had attempted the recreation of this in Ozone 9. It does sound great but the drawback to Ozone 9 is that it's not something you always have on to mix into! It's horrible with latency. GP is super light on latency, which is great, and you are meant to mix into this, according to the plugin creator. That's why I leave all of this magic to experts like you. :)
@panorama_mastering

Thanks for watching and the support as always! THere's one thing I would trade off the latency on GP for and that would be if it could oversample to avoid aliaising! Hope you're staying well! N.

Awesome comparison. Commenting before the reveal: I definitely prefer the feel of track 2. The low end is more focused and the kick transients hit harder. I think I wouldn't have noticed from listening on small speakers, but on my monitors there was a clear difference. Excited to see which is which.

(after watching) Ohhhh, okay, #2 was your chain! Great work, Nicholas. Most of my music work is film/musical sound-alikes for spoof and parody dinner theatre, so I'm not doing much work where a crunchy, midrangey contemporary pop sound serves the mix. But I'm still deciding whether to buy TGP for a faster, less fiddly mixbus when I DO need to do "modern pop" mixes. Perhaps the happy medium is TGP without the limiter, followed by a little dynamic comp/expansion with Pro-Q, and Pro-L to finish.
@panorama_mastering

Thanks for watching!!! I think the two chains are relatively similar but honestly don't show the full picture or give justice to what The God Particle provides in terms of workflow for mixers, especially mixers starting out; the guide points and thresholds makes it a no-nonsense easy to set-up mixbus tool; which I think is super valuable for those trying to get their bearings on their mixes; In terms of pure fidelity of audio I don't think the amount of filters and processing it does on the as a mix bus chain is something I'm interested in; for my mix busses I have one compressor and one limiter; if I want to get funky with tone, saturation or clipping, I usually do that in parallel; but that's how I like to mix;
@msld_sound

Big agree, I love access to fast tools - but I need more autonomy than what TGP offers, specifically parallel processing options, control over crossover frequency, and more detailed saturation and stereo imaging control.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🎛️ The "God Particle" plugin is praised for its effectiveness and efficiency in the audio mixing process. 02:20 🎚️ When turned on, the plugin introduces high shelf filter curves, boosting at low frequencies and cutting at higher frequencies, along with odd order harmonics. 03:03 🔊 The plugin's over-sampling capability might be limited, leading to slight aliasing distortion at higher frequencies. 04:12 🔄 The "push and pull" curves in the plugin influence the harmonic saturator and multiband compressor, contributing to its unique sound. 06:05 🎧 Comparing the plugin with a stack of other plugins, the "God Particle" effectively streamlines the mixing process for professionals and helps achieve desired results with ease. Thanks for this review! You explained a lot more about this plugin than anything else I could find. Most of my work is in film scoring and unfortunately, the lack of controls (and metering) this plugin offers is a showstopper for me. Especially the messing with the stereo image which is a big no-no. I can definitely understand the audience for such a plugin at this price point though, but I don't think it could be of any interest to someone mixing day in, day out. In the category of "soundgoodizers that don't require much learning," it is quite an achievement and I see where the value is. As a side-note, I think that the whole plugin is a repackaging of the old Ozone 4 Joshua's preset. Thank you for your awesome videos: mastering is hard and you do a very good job at explaining the craft.

Comments I've seen. "it's for noobs", "it sucks!", "It destroyed my mix". My opinion is noobs are the ones who like to reinvent the wheel because "they're better than everyone else". It ruined their mix because they aren't using it right, or this Mixbus plugin doesn't give the flavor they like. For some reason, noobs are in love with treble and high mids. They want their hi hats slicing your eardrums like a razor blade. Seems as though they might have hearing loss. Imo I think it's an excellent tool on the master bus, it keeps things in the pocket. Getting great mixes from it. IDK. I guess I'm a noob who has been mixing records for 26 years. Great video! I subbed. ☺️

I understand where you're coming from; It's a shame; and I feel for those coming up and getting frustrated with the process; because the marketing for a lot of these products sell silver bullet solutions; while the reality is; yes; there is some great technology going on behind the hood; BUT you need to understand it and how it works in order to get the most out of it; Most of those starting out think that audio engineer is as simple as plug-and-play;

Your chain is better bro, and you have the possibility to personalize it, it is good to study a little and make your own method. Clearly it is more marketing than something different. It can give you speed, which fits in this fast world, but the best mixes are the ones that take time. And if you have more control you can come up with a more unique sound than something that standardizes the sound. Just an opinion, cheers!

I would love to hear a solution from you on how to replicate the metering for the 3 band level recommendations. I´m not sure if the metering is pre or post multiband compression. I assume that it´s pre so that you hit the multiband stage with the correct levels. In your example in this video - what amount of gain reduction did you apply in DynOne? This could be enough indication for my question right? Also you missed the multiband widening and Paul Third mentioned in his KZbin channel that there is some transient designing happening as well but I can´t really hear some transient push ...or at least it didn´t sound much better in comparison to your chain. (except some more upfront from the vocals but this could easily be fixed as you normally mix into this plugin)
@panorama_mastering
@panorama_mastering 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ronson; The metering; not quite sure; I think the thresholds/gain reduction meter on the DynOne bands offer a sort of indicator to how hard these bands are being driven/if they're in the pocket or not; As per stereo widening; I heard rumblings about this unit doing it; but it was very difficult for me to deduce or decode a quantifiable shift in change for the stereo field; simply because underneath compression; harmonic saturation and EQ; these all impact the stereo field in some way or another too; even if only subtle

I guess the Dynone does something more. I used this plugin for a mo, during the trial version, and it definitely is doing something different than any other multiband comp. Then you showed the result and yeah, it appear obvious. Oh and also, thank you for saying that these lower harmonics are almost inaudible (not so say there are not at -100dB in a whole mix). I heard so many people bashing on plugins just for these lower harmonics, but I'm sure they can't even hear any of these on a full mix that has distorsion and so one (which appears to be on every modern music). Thanks for taking the time decoding the plugin. One thing is however misunderstood about mastering : the goal is not to put a mix into a good signal chain. The goal is to correct mix issues, make it translate and compete with what others do, and add some artistic polish & vibe. A mastering chain allows the engineers to do all of this : it's not a recipe but a series of chosen tools that each have a dedicated function and are not always all turned on. This kind of plugins let people believe in the "recipe signal chain" we see a lot on instagram. I'm not saying this doesn't work ! I'm saying it makes people believe that this guy only do this on his masters and voilà! As a mastering engineer, you need to be able to do critical listening, resolving issues, hearing more than anybody will ever do, adding polish while respecting artist's and engineer's work, and TGP is not the tool for this. A mastering engineer is able to use a multiband compressor, to hear limiter release, to hear saturation and to know when not to touch anything. He's almost staring from scratch every single time and not using fixed settings on his tools. The only step where I would use TGP is on the mixbus to "try a color". Two clicks to see quickly how can the song sound differently. This is a production/early mixing tool, not a mastering one. Hope it would help a bit people who are confused about this step. PS : I'm not by any mean saying I am a mastering engineer, but meet enough guy and spent enough time with them to understand a bit their job.

Hi! Nice chain you got there! Correct me if I`m wrong, but to my understanding you can’t measure non-linear stuff with linear analysis. In theory the frequency response shown in plugin doctor’s linear analysis tab should not be correct (or rather not mean anything). Am I missing something here…?
@panorama_mastering
@panorama_mastering 9 ай бұрын
You can measure with a linear analysis you just won’t get the full picture of whats happening. This is something i learnt after making this video, but the hammerstein graph will plot each order of harmonics on it’s on response line so you can see how harmonics are produced at each (n)th order and their relative responses giving you a more detailed picture
@viljamimehto9238
@viljamimehto9238 9 ай бұрын
@@panorama_mastering Alright, thanks for the reply! I've understood that's it's more than just not full picture when harmonics are present. With subtle harmonics it's not really affecting the results of the linear graph but I wouldn't call The God Particle's harmonics subtle, especially when driven the way it's asking you to drive it. To measure the frequency response of a plugin that's introducing saturation, to my best knowledge you should use indeed only the Hammerstein graph but zoomed in / scrolled up so you only see the top line with order of 2. Also, that eq curve doesn't really match with my ears. I'm no expert, I might be getting things wrong here.. ps. I liked your chain better than TGP! Really nice!

@panorama_mastering
@panorama_mastering 2 жыл бұрын
On a technical level; if you author it as the master; yes it's mastered; but a few notes to mention; 1. It was stated that it's a true peak limiter; however I was still getting overs registering on my meters when using the limiter (Not a big deal, but not sure how effective the TP limiting was working when I had the limiter engaged) 2. This is a mix bus tool to feed your mixes through; not a mastering solution.

Therefore it's a plug-in that reduces an entire chain of top down mixing to a single instance; in this case what other processes might be needed to complete the track in the mastering phase?
@panorama_mastering
@panorama_mastering 2 жыл бұрын
@@engineerproducer4654 Technically you're right; But as far as mastering goes; processes in mastering tools I employ have more resolution and flexibility in application; Fixed point EQ's, compression timing and saturation ties your hands in mastering very much; So whilst I see this as a great mix-bus creative soltion; a mastering solution it's a bit too limited as a all in one replacement;

@@panorama_mastering excuse my ignorance but I need to know something urgent: what is the correct digital mixing chain? In what order should these go, to complete a ''mix'' chain? Does this apply to all elements of the song? I would save life. If this ''all-in-one'' plugin contains the ''entire'' chain and you can't edit the compression parameters it has, the plugin limits you to a fixed non-editable ''compression'' for all elements. same values? for all elements?

People is like it's just, it's just it's just. I watched one million tutorial, tryed one million presset and plugin, and never get that pro sound that God particle give. Your chain match but I reconyze directly the God Particle one. More clarity, punchy low end, the high end it's not agressiv and don't mask anything like the second one. People like bright stuff, that's why even when there is mic comparaison they like the cheapest one. There is some secret sauce in this plugin. They said beyond super analog, you know your job better than me but I'm curious to know if your mastering with your best gears sound way better than god particle.

I respect that ! I understand where you're coming from too! My only qualm is in their marketing verbiage; "Beyond Super Analog"... that's just fancy words to sell something; The one thing I think they've nailed is the phase relationships of their crossovers on the EQ and the limiter itself; That said; I prefer the flexibility of my mastering set-up over using this and am able to get better results with more flexibility in my chain over using TGP I'm not saying that to discredit the value of TGP because as I said in the video; it's really an incredible mixing tool for engineers to have on their mix bus and mix into

This is like a cheat sheet you don't even have to read. Yes, it sounds powerful and 'of the time' on some things... but it certainly isn't creating new innovative engineers - it's promoting the status quo on a particular sound. I can imagine it being more effective on busses/stems. Speaking of 3rd order distortion, the Vertigo VSM-3 plugin is far more flexible and interesting as it includes even and odd harmonics and allows you to blend in both. And as for presenting a seriously peak-limited mix, what's the mastering engineer supposed to work with?

it's not really a cheat sheet, the marketing is just kind of off-putting to more experienced people. It's really a type of more advanced limiter that has some widening and saturation built in with sparkles to sell to noobs. But the limiter is really really nice... so much better than Ozone limiters, and at times better than Pro L2. The rub is that multiband section only has that one profile it's locked to. It works most of the time, but I've done mixes where the nature of the mix doesn't conform to that profile and then the god particle overcompresses the mids and ruins the mix -- in that case the pushing or pulling does nothing... you would need the option to raise the threshold for the mid band... which you can't do.

It's a simple way to check how a plug-in is oversampling; if harmonics introduced (let's say odd harmonics; 3rd and 5th order) like in TGP; then the 30k and 50k harmonics will sit outside the bandwidth of most common sampling rates; if that's the case; most plug-ins deal with this by oversampling to avoid inharmonic aliasing distorion folding back;

Pretty surprising by the way for a quick work done, but... where and how exactly to use it in my plugins chain?? didn't really figured that yet... And if you want to "know" what's happening under the hood (thx for youe video!), or get a bit more "control", it's... a bit too vague for me. Also... what you left out is that the center module that is at "100%" by default seems to add wideness and upper mid saturation the more you increase it. Also, the limiter is not just a normal limiter... it seems to use the three separate signals from the multi bands to do adaptive limiting on the three separate bands rather than the signal overall like the pro L2
