Fun fact : "godparents" were meant as caregivers if both parents pass before the child is of age along with being the spiritual guides of them. But it's not always like that now. As someone that dislikes kids, and is married to someone that also dislikes kids, no, he will not be a good dad. I can guarantee myself I would be an awful parent. I don’t think that’s what Godparent means anymore. Legally, parents designate someone to be the emergency guardians of their children if something happens to them. Godparents are more symbolic than they used to be, and more like a way for the parents to give some special honor relatives or close friends. My husband and I are Godparents to our younger niece (we hadn’t even met when the elder was born) but my SIL’s brother and his wife were made the designated guardians, because they already had a child and were older and more equipped to take on more. Godparents may be considered responsible for making sure a child is raised in the religious way the parents want, but that’s about it for responsibility.
