I have the Leisure Arts book on African Flower Motifs and I watched half a dozen or so tutorials before I found yours, and I have to say you were the most effective. I admit at first I was a little put off by your sunny disposition (my fault; I'm a dyed-in-the-wool cynic who lives on sarcasm and pasta) but I have to say your explanations, pace, and technique helped me get the African flower hexagon down in less than 40 minutes. Brava. Thank you. I mean it. Sometimes it just takes finding the right person to make it all click. When I first learned to crochet a little less than 1 year ago I probably watched 20 "magic ring" or, as you call them, "cinch circle" tutorials and for some reason it was not coming together properly. Then I found someone's tutorial and it clicked, and now every adjustable ring I make is like second nature. So thank you for being the one who clicked for me on the African flower. I've long wanted to make these and always thought they were complicated, but you broke them down into easily digestible pieces and now the whole thing is a "cinch" (see what I did there? No? Moving on...) I've been spending a lot of time in waiting rooms lately, and these are sort of perfectly sized for that length of a wait. Anyway, I subscribed to your channel, and now that I've gone on to watch more of your tutorials/walk-throughs I thought I'd come back to the original video and express my thanks. I hope you keep up the good work and never lose that sunny disposition :D

Hi Candice! Thank you for taking the time to write! I'm so pleased you powered through my sunny disposition LOL (seriously, my husband loved that LOL).

Well, you had me smiling by the end so I figured I'd let you know I appreciated your tutorial. So many people are quick to complain when something's wrong, but reluctant to praise when something is good, so I make sure to leave positive feedback when it's warranted :) I have a question though. I'm making my pile of African flower hexagons for a lovey I saw (this one: chaosandchopsuey.wordpress.com/2016/06/05/baby-on-the-way/) and they're all curly once round 4 is done. I even frogged half a dozen finished hexagons - which pained me - and re-did them, stitching looser this time, but after round 4 they still look more like pre-stuffing biscornu than a motif (they lay flat 'til I do the spike stitch round, which makes them curl). Will they flatten when I whip stitch them together, or do they have to be wet blocked first? I'm using Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn. I can't and don't use acrylic yarn because it seems to irritate my eczema, making my hands flame red and dry. Cotton is much more gentle and doesn't cause those problems. I'm used to making amigurumi, which do not need to be blocked. All made thus far have been with cotton yarn, whether it was thread or Sugar 'n Cream yarn. I'm still new to crochet and I haven't encountered this problem before, and you didn't seem to have it with your [presumably] acrylic motifs. Help! It looks like I have a pile of really colorful Pringles when I should have a flat stack of motifs, and I'm getting really tired of re-doing my work. :|

Hello Jayda!I watched a few videos of crocheting but, you're one of the best teachers out there. Love your humor! I like the way you explain everything so well and repeat what needs to be done, I need that kind of repetition. I started crocheting about a month ago and I know the basic stitches. I'm trying to learn how to make the hexagon motif because my sister started working on an afghan about 12 years or so ago and she passed away without finishing it.I thought I got rid of her motifs and yarns but to my surprise I found the box in one of my closets after I started crocheting and it just brought tears to my eyes. Great video! And I love this pattern. I'm leaving the rest of this comment as a help to myself because everytime I start a new flower I have to watch the video. 😉 6:27 magic circle 6:45 round 1 chain 3 then add six sets of two double crochets into the magic circle with one space in between 13:44 round 2. Work new color into a chain one space. Chain three, double crochet, chain two, double crochet so two sets of double crochet, space two, two more double crochet six sets of these into all chain 1 spaces 19:02 close round 2 20:10 round 3 slip stitch down to a chain 2 corner, chain 3, DC 6x for a total of 7, chain 1 for spacer 26:16 round 4. Add a new color, start right after a chain one spacer (at the top of a double crochet) with a single crochet. Single crochet into seven stitches then add a spike stitch repeat all the way around don't forget last spike stitch. 33:03 close round 4 34:31 Round 5. Change color. Start at the top of the spike stitch with a slip stitch and chain three. Double crochet into the next three stitches on the fourth stitch double crochet twice into the same stitch then continue to double crochet to the next spike stitch. 41:27 close round 5
