Thousands of these and the previous GT ended up in New Zealand and were super cheap for most of the 2000s. My last one was $800 for a GT with 250,000km on it, Didn’t blow any smoke and apart from a slight crunch on third gear ran like a dream with nothing but oil changes for maintenance. Sadly they are pretty rare now and starting to go for silly money

Another great review! Love how Toyota just use the same part across models, the wiper and indicator stalks, window switches and isolator switch are the same in all my previous 3 Toyotas and the starlet. Thought Toyota were introducing new parts for old models so hopefully they produce parts for these too

Great to see you review the Glanza James. My very first car was a 1997 Glanza V that I imported myself from Japan way back in 2004. It had a few mods on it when I got it like Livesports bodykit, Bride seats, rear seats removed, full roll cage lovely SSR Spec-C 15" wheels and a few other bits. Of course since it was my first car and the whole JDM tuning thing was very popular at that time, I of course spent an absolute fortune on the car, eventually bringing it to about 250hp. I still haven't car, its been in my garage since 2009. Hopefully whenever I can get enough money together, I will eventually get it back on the roads again. They are a brilliant car. Oh and a little hint for the owner of the car you reviewed James. If it came with an LSD from factory, it should say it on the sticker on the inside of the drivers door, or possibly the passenger side (its been a long time since I've checked). Worth having a look anyway.

I had the Unicorn of starlets, the Starlet GT turbo quad light. Only made them for one year and imo is the best starlet. Sold it for £3500 in beautiful condition back in the mid 2000s. Crazy what these are worth now. The famed soft clutch was the big failure on these and that the bonnet scoop would flood the spark plugs in heavy rain.

@AliceC993

I've always noticed that about older compacts like this, they always feel a bit quicker than the numbers would indicate. I'm in the US so naturally we don't get anything fun here, but I own, as an example, a 1999 Corolla with a 4spd automatic. Quite possibly the most boring car you could imagine, however... 120 hp, from a non-VVTi variant of the 1ZZ-FE, and a kerb weight of about 1100 kg - it's surprisingly fun to drive! It handles _far_ better than you would expect for a commodity economy car and it's not as slow as you would think. The biggest problem is the extremely long gear ratios, but the very wide torque band makes up for it.

Great little cars. I've had two - a pre-facelift and post-facelift, both white near-fresh imports with only a couple of modifications (cat-back, induction kit, aftermarket BOV). The owners club / forum is the best resource for information on these cars. Fun fact: the Lo-boost mode is controlled by a little vacuum solenoid in the engine bay, any by default actually restricts 1st and 2nd gear to Lo mode, so those gears actually only use ~115bhp - this can be bypassed by rearranging a couple of lines on the solenoid, a 30 second job, it removes the functionality of the 'Lo' switch but gives full 135bhp in all gears.

So I first drove one of these back in 2001 (no licence but thanks JDM mental step dad at the time who basically let me live me gran turismo dream with all the cars you had) and to this day having driven type R's and leon cupra R's ... this was simply more fun! It's a little rocket!!! I've not watch the video yet 😅 I got so giddy seeing Jay and this pop up I was like NOPE gotta spew my opinion! So first off they're so fucking nippy! And I don't mean swift sport nippy I mean RS2 killing nippy, the handling was so precise! Suspension was hard but manageable and being 6ft 6 I was relatively comfortable in there! These cars are a gem! A true undersung hero that was in an era dominated by the old Civic Type R and that mental Talbot sunbeam lotus messed around with!
