If they can bring in the options to select colour of leather and stitching then that alone will bring in a new level, not necessarily complete bespoke but at least offer more than black, cream, tan/brown…. While I’ve a provisional order down waiting for a Cupra Born I’ve got to say the DS4 E-Tense fully loaded is looking very tempting but I do t like either the slack or brown interior colour, if they’re going Art Deco influences then blue and green work very well (you know, like DS’s of old)

Your main issue seems to be with the concept of a plug-in hybrid. It’s not specific to this car. Plug-In hybrid work great if you usually do shorter drive and can charge it at home or work. Then you mostly drive on electric, yet you can still do the occasional long drive without the hassle of an electric car. It’s a transition solution before the fast charging network is well developed. DS is going full electric soon.

You are absolutely right , and on point there. My DS7 is with 2.0L HDI engine, and its doing its job great. Unfortunately they dropped that engine for a smaller one. I was tempted to get this exact setup , cause I do prefer gasoline engines instead of diesel, but all those talks about how bad was 1.6 petrol co-developed with BMW pushed me away. It would make sense for me cause i 80 % of the time do short runs home to work and back , and even closest city isn't that far for electric mode, but when You actually need to go somewhere like a 1000 km's away i can still use car regularly , and not depend on non existing charging network, or spending 5 hours charging the bloody thing. I think he made a mistake as we all do presuming that his needs are exact like the rest of us. In general its a great car , and compared to SQ5 he mentioned even close to compared equipment its double the price. Its a smidge smaller and very usable . You get a q5 level of car for Q3 price. A well equipped one i must say that looks far better. Drew all 3 of them in top level trims with 2l engines , and this just came on top by a mile for comfort , build quality and feel. If You want a sports car - this just isn't the one to look at. Its a premium comfort SUV, that can make a smile on Your face in a different way.

Since DS is the part of Stellantis now, I'd imagine a DS7 Crossback or DS9 with detuned V6 from Ghibli or Giuila QV with, say, 400hp tops, would have been ideal, isn't it? Pair it with 8spd auto, tune it for a more comfort-oriented purpose, and we have a winner. The problem was that DS cars are of FWD platform so that's going to be a bit impossible.

They don`t sell that good now anyway and Citroen was already in the company (PSA) before. DS Models already existed before the Stellantis merger. The most cars they sell are small DS3 Hatchbacks. That`s why they can also claim to sell more cars than Lexus in the region.

The PSA park assist works very well!! If the gap is tight it will desist, but for every other parking spot it works nice. If you commute in one of these and you charge you'll barely use any petrol! An uncle of mine bought a Tuareg R last year and while it doesn't have the better economy during long journeys, 340 days out of a year he uses little to no petrol. You may be right to say that for that use you could go electric but the advantage is that he can do very long trips, which he does on vacation not worrying about charging in the destination and the other main benefit: you can travel very fast which is impossible with an electric because you drain the battery

It might say DS on the tin buts it’s still a Peugeot/ Citroen when you lift the lid. The 1.2 3 cylinder engine you mentioned also lives in my daily Vauxhall combo life van it’s a good little engine with the turbo and 8 speed automatic gearbox it lugs the van about with no problem and my average mpg hovers about the 36 mpg. It’s not very posh inside like the DS but it’s a workhorse and doesn’t pretend to be any thing else. The DS with the 1.2 doesn’t sound a bad prospect. And save some cash over the car you tested.

As far as I know, they isn't any way you can adopt that engine on thesetwo cars, the platform hasn't been designed for 6 cylinders. That was true for the EMP2 v1 and v2, perhaps it changed since then, but I wouldn't bet on it. Anyway, DS should be 100% electrified (which means hybrid should still exist) in few years, so perhaps a hybrid V6, but sorry, it will never happen in europe, perhaps China.

I think this review has started to make me realise how much plug ins make sense for my driving habits at the moment. With a relatively short commute id never need to put any fuel in the car for my work commute, but then when I do longer trips every other month to visit family I don’t have to worry about range. The only question this raises is the one of petrol being sat - my motorbikes don’t like petrol to be in the tank for longer than about a month otherwise it creates a problem starting. I wonder if this would ever prove a problem for me using the ICE so little?
@NickLiang
@NickLiang 2 жыл бұрын
I have the E tense, the electric range is a lot less than what it states, about 25 miles as an absolute maximum with very efficient driving. If you make a single journey across town say 40 miles round trip, you will use the petrol engine for almost half of that. Also it has a very small fuel tank due to the battery, only about 35 litres, so you will actually use up all the fuel within a few weeks if you do a bit of motorway driving. Also driving above 60mph drains the electric battery, you'll get like 15 to 20 miles of range driving at those speeds

Agree, it misses the true “premium” mission on several points (the range topping 1.6 turbo is a massive one for me) but the range / consumption argument applies to every plug-in hybrid I’ve tried - including the German ones. IMO they are all good until the battery is depleted and then you pay a performance / consumption penalty for the additional weight. Maybe the 30 mile electric range at is a bit feeble but it’s pretty close to the daily average mileage in the UK so it does have the opportunity to minimise ICE consumption for many - provided you can recharge daily. You can go on the occasional long journeys and suffer with mediocre performance / consumption - but without range anxiety.

Those consumption figures are misleading yes but they are a big reason why manufacturers have to build plugins. For example here in Sweden it makes all the difference when it comes to tax and incentives. Idiotic according to me but... These hybrid terms are getting confused, the Corolla hybrid is a hybrid, not a mild-hybrid. That would be something like the Volvo V60 B4. Great review though James!

I get the idea with PHEVs that the engine isn't particularly efficient if you're not sitting at low revs in high gear, and the battery range is negatively affected if you're not pottering around town between 20 and 30mph. We know that when both are combined, it can make for good performance, but this of course exposes the lack of range and the extra weight of the vehicle. HYbrid4 would be an alternative, but then again, we all know how fashionable diesels are. Instead of chasing headline MPG figures, wouldn't a mild hybrid solution (and its reduction in weight) plus a bit of honesty hurt so much?
@jasonrobards7695
@jasonrobards7695 2 жыл бұрын
If England gets them please review the COFFEE 1 from WEY from china. It has a 150km battery range as a PHEV. Now dont expect Panther like performance however that is probably not the goal of a PHEV. A google search of average trips made show that 97% of all trips are less than 100km. SO at 150km range you almost have a BEV withou the huge cost. I would estimate in the UK around 30-35 thousand pounds or around 55K in Australia. Jason

That's the thing with establishing a new premium-brand, isn't it? In order to succeed, you have to immediately do everything right, as you are serving a more demanding customer. A good attempt doesn't seem enough. With their latest models, I can see DS thriving in a few years time, though. The benefits of plug in-hybrids are a little lost on me too, personally. It makes sense perhaps if you drive short distances a lot, but in that case you're more likely to buy a smaller and cheaper car, no?

@@socalguy829 Does it, though? Should manufacturers create a false of value by offering an arbitrary engine measurement that says almost nothing about sophistication? What's the most sophisticated 1.6 in the world and what's it for 2.5s? That 2.0 or 2.5 you desire is going to hit you hard on road tax and insurance without adding any sort of comfort or performance unless kept absolutely the same otherwise. All you pay for with a "premium" engine size is NOTHING. The space for fuel to be injected and expanded into. It's not even a larger dildo, it's a larger void to fill. Requiring more metal to make into a decent apparatus. Costing you more. But not giving you anything. You'd have loved the emperor's new clothes. Only really smart purple could see it. What's the point of progress if you need a 2.0 or 2.5 liter engine to power a premium mid size car, in 2022? So crazy arbitrary. When at the same time Mercedes gives itself the greatest engineering nightmare ever promising hypercar buyer to actually use an F1 1.6 engine when for that car they had better started from scratch. My first car was a 1982 1.6 Astra Lux. I usually got at least 40 mpg. I have a 335d and that hits 40mpg over the last 3200miles. Why on earth would you consider a Citroen for very similar price to the 335d touring. That’s all it is a Citroen dressed up. Like another comment. It’s a flash watch with a cheap eta movement.

Cause it isnt a Citroen dressed up. Its Peugeot chassis of new 3008/5008 underneath , and i get over 50 mpg in my 2l never less than 45 mpg. But compare X3 with ds7 and You will get totally different result , 2 l in highest trim is about 30 % less then BMW, and DS7 wins by far with equipment .

When launched, this could be specced with a 2.0 diesel turbo. It seems that PSA have dropped the legendary 2.0 HDi which is what made the most sense, when the DS7 was released, I would recommend it. Now? Not at all. Hybrids are utterly pointless. Either get an ICE or get a full electric. Hybrids are the worst of both worlds.
@Xerxesro1
@Xerxesro1 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, these hybrids are too compromised, especially on bigger cars. Anyhow, they have done so because they have to comply with fleet-wide emissions. How the Germans can get away with still offering 3 litters, I don't know.

@@Xerxesro1 the Germans manufacturers have relatively new engines; the 1.6l Prince engine in this DS7 is from 2006 (its been evolved to meet latest regs). Engine tech has moved on a long way since 2006.

@@TroyHR123 You are missing the point. Just because it's based on the older one it doesn't make it old. This one has twin-scroll turbo and variable valve lift. Besides, it won best engine of the year 1.4 to 1.8 award for 8 years in a row.

I never understand why a French Automaker wants to be german. The ultimate flaw from the right off. Citroën, Mors and Voisin look into Citroëns history some incredible. 2cv Bauhaus levels of design, the 1955 DS19 Gothic inspired styling amazing out the box engineering. Citroën has an amazing history why make a sub brand? And again why try be German jeez. ?! Make a statement do not follow convention, out the box engineering and pure artistry. Squishy squashy suspension and a good dose of pragmatism in design. Maby I might take note. I personally dont think there is any substance to the DS Brand. I am a passionate Citroën enthusiast owned a 59 2cv and a 59 ID. I am 37. I like german cars but as a time served mechanic I dont like the built quality lack of under body seam sealing etc. The Germans are really skimping in certain areas. Overrated.

I also had 2 CV's 7-8 of them , Diane , and a lot of German and Italian cars, . I simply went in open minded . Liked the design , size worked for me for this moment in time, and price was right for almost all equipment . They are not trying to be German, they just wanted to be more exclusive , and i think it worked. Substance for a separate brand or not , I think it worked.

You can get so much car for £50k second hand. Why bother buying new? Esspecially when all it will get you is a 1.6 4 banger. People don't see it like that though, they want a brand new car even if it's a bit shit. You could buy a top of the range Jaguar XJR for that kind of money.

Citroën; which spawned DS when it was part of PSA, and now Stellantis, has lost all respect from me in the early 2000s. At that time already, PSA has all but forgotten how to build exciting engines for their buyers, or exciting chassis; they would have had a HUGE opportunity to correct that with their runaway rally success (at the hands of a certain Sébastien Loeb) but alas: no 4WD, four pot turbocharged Xsara to be seen; nor a C4 or DS3 after that. And look at their lineup today. It's, truthfully, pathetic. Had they not lost the shift to EVs, I'd have some respect for them... But no, not even that. And the attitude of their CEO really does not help.
