I tried a D3 around 2008 it was the best handling car on country roads I’d ever tried up to that point. There were a few downsides : the warranty was only 2 years versus 3 on a conventional 3 series; leasing costs were significantly higher than a well spec’d 320 d touring (guessing down to higher depreciation); every boy racer looked upon you as someone who wanted a race. A great car though.

That may change soon though as I have a real itch that needs scratching in the form of a Roadster S. Alpina styling is so subtle and classy, they do just enough to make their cars look cool without being lary and in my opinion the E85 derived Roadster S is a beautiful example of this. I would rather go for a higher mileage diesel than a lower mileage, simply due to the fact that the emission control systems in place in diesels (Catalytic converter, dpf etc) only really work when up to temperature, so driving them lower miles (also assuming shorter journey times) ruins these components. Higher mileage diesels are the way to go, and this looks like a fine example of such a high miler!

Selling B4 because the D3 is totally sufficient on British roads: 0-62 in less than 4+ secs, 173mph max, 516 ft lbs/ 700 Nm same torque as a Maclaren, comfortable, enough room for two grandchildren and two dogs. Alpinas are totally different from, and worth every penny of premium over, their BMW equivalents.

@s l they're built the same way, in the same factory by the same people. There are several factors: - Sulphur content in north American gasoline increases risk of injector and/or fuel pump failure - north americans drive the crap out of their cars, often without too much consideration. We also drive longer distances so cars get older quicker. Also our roads suck, unless you're in Georgia or something. - A different clientele compared to Europe buys these cars, often young kids who tend to modify and tune them. It's hard to find a clean, unmolested 335 (as an example, because I have one) with low km. - mechanic culture: while there's a lot of very talented mechanics that are very knowledgeable, there's also a big bunch of them who ended up becoming one because "it pays well". BMWs also need some special care sometimes and a knowledgeable mechanic should know how to prevent failures, bit just change a broken part. They are hard to find.

For context I've owned many M cars and Alpinas and currently own, among others, a D3 Bi-Turbo. Obviously tyre choice will effect things too, and the run flats that BMW fit are awful.

@@pjwesterby4485 yeah I kind of get that they are tuning the suspension to offset the large rims better but still if comfort is their goal why not tune the suspension for comfort AND go for rims with more sidewall? Crashy ride from oversized rims is such a big downfall on most modern cars.

I think we've suddenly found the brand of car created for James. It's just that it's taken all this time to find out. Makes perfect sense given all the negative comments aimed at cars that are....a little bit "too much" for the road, according to James. This is perhaps the sweet spot. And of course, it's nice to own something really quite rare.

Mine is on 292,000. Almost totally reliable for last 7 years, just one leaking diesel pipe at 290k a couple of weeks ago. I have had over 160 mph out of it. I love driving it, only gripe is i wish it had more steering feel like from an E91. If you get the cat and dpf unblocked plus deactivate the EGR it helps turbo responce low down and fuel consumption improves a lot. Before i used to get high 40s mpg on a run, now its mid 50s and even low 60s mpg is possible if you drive it at 65 to 70 mph in 8th gear. Which is incredible mpg for such a quick car.

Update mine is now on 325,000 (last year 292,000) Oil & Filter changes every 10k. I asked for the a gearbox and diff service at 300k. Not too expensive. Car has original gearbox diff engine and cambelt ! I always take care to let it warm up for a few mins before pushing it. I use premium fuel and quality tyres. Look after your car and it will look after you 😉

@@edword7195 They are, sort of... the company was declared officially bankrupt in late 2019 - early 2020 I believe and had its assets liquidated in mid 2020, there was a lot that was kept under wraps but when we were at the auction of their assets there was a collection of multiple, unfinished Bristol's (based on a Morgan aero chassis with a BMW v8 variant) that were up for private negotiation along with rights to the Bristol cars name and a few other bits. I can't say for sure who they ended up being sold to however I did notice a while back that an entrepreneur has taken on the brand and is planning to revive it. Its probably a safe bet that he purchased the unfinished cars along with the rights and is planning to finish them off. I've also seen various adds for 2021 continuations of the Bristol fighter on car and classic, that will supposedly be a 1:1 perfect remake of the original

I worked on this car back in the day when I worked at bmw Nottingham. I think I did 2 of the oil services and also some repair work, I think on the EGR system if I remember correctly. The previous owner was high up in sytner group and he basically lived in it. Edit: he was the head buyer for sytner group. There was always tons of European ad mags for cars in it and he used to car to hop from place to place to go view the cars all over the place

Breaks my heart every time I see one. About 8 years we were in a farmers auction deep in West Wales. One of these a alpina e39 b something saloon went through for £600 quid. I knew it was different but not being a bmw person I Didnt realise what it actually was. Anyway we didn't buy it as it had every warning light on but I drove it through the ring and it was lovely. Only that evening when I checked out ebay and classified sites I realised what we lost.. The wheels alone were worth more than the hammer down price.. Gutted.

Alpina is always better than m cars in my eyes. Alpina engines are based on BMW mass produced engines with strengthening in important areas, thus way more reliable than the M engines. Plus their suspension tuning is purposefully comfortable, matching the gearbox and engine really well. Also they just look better than m cars.

Bytheway, Alpina is simply what M was when my mother got her E12 M535i in 1981, it’s cool, fast and unique, it is what Mpower once was, that’s why you buy a Alpina, not to be a typical BMW nutcase but to drive it fast daily for work
