I would rather go for a higher mileage diesel than a lower mileage, simply due to the fact that the emission control systems in place in diesels (Catalytic converter, dpf etc) only really work when up to temperature, so driving them lower miles (also assuming shorter journey times) ruins these components. Higher mileage diesels are the way to go, and this looks like a fine example of such a high miler!

Alpinas are totally different from, and worth every penny of premium over, their BMW equivalents.

@luigicornelio75103 жыл бұрын
@s l they're built the same way, in the same factory by the same people. There are several factors: - Sulphur content in north American gasoline increases risk of injector and/or fuel pump failure - north americans drive the crap out of their cars, often without too much consideration. We also drive longer distances so cars get older quicker. Also our roads suck, unless you're in Georgia or something. - A different clientele compared to Europe buys these cars, often young kids who tend to modify and tune them. It's hard to find a clean, unmolested 335 (as an example, because I have one) with low km. - mechanic culture: while there's a lot of very talented mechanics that are very knowledgeable, there's also a big bunch of them who ended up becoming one because "it pays well". BMWs also need some special care sometimes and a knowledgeable mechanic should know how to prevent failures, bit just change a broken part. They are hard to find.

Now that I'm older and slightly more grown up, I can appreciate the sub brand Alpina much more. The BMW 3 Series for people who want more performance without buying the blunt and brutal M variant.

Breaks my heart every time I see one. About 8 years we were in a farmers auction deep in West Wales. One of these a alpina e39 b something saloon went through for £600 quid. I knew it was different but not being a bmw person I Didnt realise what it actually was. Anyway we didn't buy it as it had every warning light on but I drove it through the ring and it was lovely. Only that evening when I checked out ebay and classified sites I realised what we lost.. The wheels alone were worth more than the hammer down price.. Gutted.

Alpina is always better than m cars in my eyes. Alpina engines are based on BMW mass produced engines with strengthening in important areas, thus way more reliable than the M engines. Plus their suspension tuning is purposefully comfortable, matching the gearbox and engine really well. Also they just look better than m cars.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Alpina ever since my dad took me out in his bosses 635 Alpina in 1980s

I had two F30 320ds both company cars did 120k in each over 5.5 years so 240k in total. Had to change discs and pads on both but that was it. Now got a G30 530e running well also.

Whats the mpg like in the 530e compared to the 320d
@chrisburton46943 жыл бұрын
@@Taylor40667 first 320d can’t overly remember second one was the efficient dynamics version and 54mpg average was easy, 530e 44mpg is where I’m at. Company car tax saving was the changer for me

Imagine that engine problem had happened just after the warranty finished that would be real bad and huge amount of money wasted. But its an unbelievable car when its running fine.

i Have E46 B3 with 300K KM the enige ( and everything else) is in mint condition. Bytheway, Alpina is simply what M was when my mother got her E12 M535i in 1981, it’s cool, fast and unique, it is what Mpower once was, that’s why you buy a Alpina, not to be a typical BMW nutcase but to drive it fast daily for work

The B3 and D3 were available either in RWD or Allrad form, but seems like the latter was more popular.

Not in the UK. RWD only for both.

In the seventies, when Porsche Turbo had 250 hp, Alpina had 300 hp in their 5-series, and later in the eighties, it became 330 hp in both the 5 and 6 series. In 1990, they had 360 in their 5-series, and so on.

Never saw an Alpina in South Africa. I think there were some that were imported there, but they were super rare. I saw one when I was living in reading, just before moving to Fareham. Haven't seen another one since.
