Not all young people won’t give it a chance, I’m 18 and I absolutely adore the LC and so do many others I know who aren’t bothered at all that it’s a Lexus because it’s the same company that made the LFA after all. The problem is of course that none of us could ever hope of affording it before it inevitably gets pulled from sale.

So I have a coupe (2020), purchased in June of this year as a CPO. This is one of those love it or not deals. I was sold on the brand after getting my wife a ES 350 and having the Lexus experience. After deciding I wanted to have a sedan as a daily driver (in the nice months, I live in the Midwest) because I have driven a F250 for the past 10 years, I looked at Porsche, Merc and BMW both briefly and a few others and stumbled back upon the Lexus LC. Some background, I am 55, married with older kids and could have gone a few different ways in this search. I had seen a total of (1) LC 500 in the flesh other than one at the Lexus dealership when purchasing the car for my wife, they are rare in my geography. When I weighed the goals and or needs it was more or less the following: something that is different, something that is comfortable and fun to drive every day, lower maintenance and something that will hold decent value. I did the usual KZbin and internet search/research and settled on the LC. In the short time I have owned this car I have no regrets, not one. Yes there is the goofy infotainment but as Jay stated, it isn't really all that bad once you get used to the quirks of the navigation. The power and flow of this car is seamless and even as a heavy weight it handles perfectly. It is a great GT car and one that I would match with many twice the price (DB11). I love driving this thing and perhaps not for everyone, I would suggest it wholeheartedly to anyone who asked me. I was at a car show this past weekend with the usual suspects, a bunch of C7 and C8's, a few Ferrari's, McLaren's, Porsche, and the like, 100 cars give or take, there was one LC. Very popular with the car nerds, of which I am one. One last thing, JayEmm and Savagegeese were both instrumental in my decision, I trust the information for what it is and made a decision based on the long term prognosis for NA V-8 engines and where the world may be headed. I make no other assertions beyond the idea that this car was held up to high expectations and in the past few months more than lived up to the challenge, thanks JayEmm for the reviews.

The Japanese sportscar craze is an interesting topic. Most of their existence had been justified within the 80s bubble economy, meaning manufacturer could invest a lot and gain small margins, and buyers could obtain loans for more affordable sportscars than Ferraris and Porsches. That's why their main market was Japan in terms of sales density. When the bubble bursted, prices went up and those already sold in Japan started being repossessed due to insolvency. By the 2000s the magic was over and they were selling just as much as they would have without the bubble. 2002 was the year in which emissions got stricter in Japan and that was the last nail in the coffin.

The catch 22 of this car. Nobody buys it new because everyone expects it would be an amazing value for a fraction of its asking price at 7-10 years time because of the charismatic engine and reputation for reliability. The few people that bought them new decide to keep them longterm because they are rare, reliable and special. As a result the day the production ends used prices skyrocket, supply is very low so the amazing value at a fraction of its price bit never happens. However early v8 lc's are already at mid 50s and they are really tempting. If people are expecting r230 or x150 levels of depreciation I think they are in for a bitter surprise. The market has moved on an these are much rarer and more niche products. Too bad about the wind deflector though an effective deployable always there solution would be expected at that level

The coupe is around 50% at 4 years old and seem to be falling a few thousand a month, they will hit maybe £40k in a year or so and slow and eventually plateau at around £30-35k, but a 6 year old one with 30k miles and 4 years of warranty for £35k or roughly 30% of retail still seems pretty tempting

The popularity in other markets is a bit academic because most buyers would rather pay more for a car thats right her right now than pay less for one on the other side of the atlantic and deal with the import hustle, plus the uk is rhd so that narrows the import options a lot

I can’t fathom why Lexus haven’t bought the latest gen IS to the UK, they sold really well but I think they put their eggs in the ES300h basket - which is a great car but far too big, the range needs a junior exec saloon

Never heard of that warranty plan. Is that only available in the UK?

That is a gorgeous car. The detail and quality is outstanding. Design theatre everywhere. As you say, £100k is a lot of money, and a catalogue of alternatives.

Having driven this car myself there are some key areas I disagree on. Wind is nowhere near as bad as you make it out to be. Climate control in the car is excellent at keeping the driver warm with the roof down. Also, the gears…hitting the speed limit = 3rd gear or more likely 4th, not 2nd. 🤷🏻♂️

Test driving one in the Uk next week. If I like, I will order one. Madness? Decadence? Yes,perhaps, but life is for living, and as I approach 60, I want to start to live life to the full while I can. Great review, as ever.

Like the look of it but that colour clash between the centre console and the rest of the interior would keep me awake at night long after I'd managed to forget that shirt!

I think it's the best convertible GT in the world right now... although the new SL is pretty amazing. Anyway, I'd choose an LC over a Targa, even. Only problem is I don't think I'd go for the convertible over the incredible looking coupe.

Not driven one, but the LC500 V8 convertible is one of my dream cars, I simply love the way it looks and sounds.

Started looking at the lc500 coupe in the last few months and can't help but want one. Many of the reasons you state in your review draw me to it, unique drive train, quality interior, g'ness. There are a few used examples on auto trader around the 45-55k price. Sorely tempted is an understatement!

Honestly if I spent 100k+ on a fun, wknd cruiser like this I sure as hell would expect it to be uber reliable and honestly Lexus is the best in the business when it comes to that.

This will be the perfect used car in 3-5 years. I could see myself picking one up in 8-10 years time when I have the funds to do so. Provided that the values are reasonable (under $50,000) and costs like fuel and potential taxes aren't too high.

I’ve had my 2018 LC 500 for six years. I drive in about four or five days a week. The only expenses I’ve had are routine maintenance. The car still looks brand new and it still drives like a brand new car. It’s comfortable. It’s safe. It’s plenty fast enough for me. I learned how to use voice command so I almost never use the trackpad. I’m just wondering how many people can say that about a supercar they’ve owned for six years. Honestly, I look forward to driving it all the time. It’s never boring. It is literally, in my humble opinion a perfect car. Having owned many imperfect cars in my day, the Lexus LC 500 is by far the best car I’ve ever owned.

You actually made a short mention to the car stereo. I guess mentioning the "good" special luxury car stereos would be kinda cool. What's a road trip without your favorite tunes? That beautiful exhaust note. Lol .

Interesting review Jay. I especially like it when you wrung it out! Still, despite the fact that I am 70 years old I’m evidently not old enough to drive an old person’s car yet. This one has typical Japanese styling and I don’t like all that vehicular weight. It would still take a base 718 Boxster (which I own) over this car and save a “few” thousand. Anyway, nice presentation.

As for heating and cooling, it would seem your test car lacks the heated and ventilated seats and lacks the hot and cool air airscarfs--which make heating and cooling very nice.

Strange how it’s the best car in its class and probably every other class.
@videogazer801Ай бұрын
Jay is spot on though, as this car is sold in extremely low volume due to low demand. So, in the end, Jay is right about this car having a time selling by large scale. At over $100k, the LC500 simply doesn’t slot perfectly into any ‘niche’ persay, with so many other option out there that offer more tech and emotional satisfaction. Great review, Jay! 👍

One of the best GT’s of this century, and people are to caught up with numbers and tech these days to realise what a real quality and well engineered car is, truly sad, if I ever have the funds to buy one I would happily have an LC500 on my drive way over almost any other 100K car

Idk if I'm considered a young person, but I'm definitely not a retiree. 35 yrs old here. Placed my deposit for the 2024 convertible this past week-I wanted the updated infotainment system. I admit though that it was not a car I had considered until a retiree friend of mine, in South Florida (lol at the stereotype), let my wife and me cruise around with it, and it was an experience like no other. I like fast cars and knowing I could smoke the guy next to me (thinking back at my early JDM days), but at the end of the day, I'm not going to be tracking the cars that I buy. I was looking at the C8 Corvette, but soon realized that I was getting a Cobalt level service across these Chevy dealerships. 718s are too expensive in the USA (they're like 30% cheaper in Europe), and they're everywhere. I like driving something most people don't own. And bonus: it's a family car. I can fit my 1 yr old back there. The design is beautiful and eccentric, yet, somehow mature. A Corvette is bad ass looking, but I wouldn't say pretty. This car here is a Naboo fighter, and a Corvette is an X-Wing. I wish the red interior was an option with the yellow exterior though. I think the color configurations show that it's aimed at older people.

Well, I just bought one. Picking it up on Saturday. I’m turning 50 years old soon, and it’s exactly the car I’m looking for. A luxury sport GT convertible. I love the fact that not many people have one. It’ll be a unique car in the neighborhood, and not a dime a dozen BMW, Porsche, or MB. Cant wait to pick it up.

And that’s why I want one because most people won’t , I think these cars either coupe or convertible form are stunning . I just hope that I will still have a license when I can afford to buy a used one in a few years time . In a lifetime of car ownership and a current owner of a Lexus their customer service is the best I have ever encountered.

I own a 2011 ISF - best car I have ever owned and in its 10 year history has not had ANYTHING go wrong( still under warranty till 2022). I would go for one of these to replace it (not that I think I could ever part with the ISF) secondhand these are already down to £55K.... so tempting...

I quite enjoy James review of some of my favorite automotive delights. Although I may not see eye to eye with his quirky shirt choices, I do however agree with his appreciation for petrol powered vehicles and hope we can find a way to hold onto the combustion engine possibly using a more eco friendly fuel source. Cheers.
