I just bought a 2018 earlier today. My very first Lexus. I have owned just about everything else from an S 63 to a Dodge Viper and a Ferrari. I had been looking for the perfect Porsche. Not finding that at a reasonable price I stumbled across one of the videos for this car and started considering it. It is absolutely gorgeous and pictures don’t do it justice. I may be in a minority, but my LC500 was one of the worst cars I’ve owned and Lexus, the very worst dealership. The car had various issues, was poorly prepped, needed 4 new tyres (odd for a 5000 mile car), had the usual fuel filler problems and had paint issues. These are a physically beautiful car with what seems strong build quality, but they drive terribly, especially the hybrid where the cvt and 4 speed auto boxes constantly hunt for gears, leaving you suddenly revving the nuts off the car for no apparent reason. They are also extremely heavy and ponderous with the worst multi-media of any car on the market, unless you get a new one with Apple / Android. Finally, don’t be fooled by the Mark Levinson hi-fi, it’s utterly abysmal.

This car is a beauty. It's definitely for people who understand that there's more to cars than horsepower and acceleration. Hi, first of all, I love your videos James, please keep them coming! Second, I wanted to comment on the dealership experience at Lexus, which often gets mentioned as one of the perks of Lexus ownership. I bought a brand new LC500 last year at my local dealership and it was one of the most gruesome experiences I could’ve imagined. The car was delivered with a bad paintwork which was noticed within an hour of ownership. Taking advice from my detailer and Lexus Owners Club forum, I have rejected the car. What followed was more than a month of intermittent lack of communication and playing for time to actively gaslighting me and my wife during interactions with the staff and some genuinely dodgy attempts to force us to accept the car. In the end I did end up with a new replacement car and I am indeed a extraordinarily happy with it. Regrettably, due to this experience I will never buy another Lexus as there is only one dealership in Northern Ireland. As it is, I have no regrets over getting the LC500 but I am already concerned what long term servicing is gonna look like.

my first experience with my lc was a C- at best than the next visit I sat on the service drive for an oil change and no one came I just left after 30 mind.... but after speaking with the Service director and getting a new advisor all has been great....I think part of the problem is there are so many other lexus models you feel like a number in the machine instead of the owner of a brands halo car.

I had a loan of one of these when they first came out. So nice inside, great technology. Mpg with hybrid was off the charts. Really composed and lots of grip. I had zero fun in it though. Had much more fun on way home in my then mx5. Hugely impressive and capable which almost makes it boring. It's an issue I have with most modern cars though. They appeal as devices but not as drivers cars to me.
@ApothecaryTerry2 жыл бұрын
Nothing will match an MX-5 for fun, to be fair, except perhaps a 306 GTi-6. The LC500h exists for only one reason- the GS450h was too expensive to build 😄 The drivetrain is silly though. Thing is though, it's as fast as the 10 year newer versions of an Audi S6 or BMW 540i, both of which I've driven this week, however it's far more reliable and better to own by all measures. It's also actually more fun to drive, more efficient and faster past about 30mph. Lexus know how to make a weird car, they take months to get used to, but once you do it's bloody hard to find a replacement. As it is, I own one car: a 981 Cayman S. I've spent 2 months driving cars non-stop in the search for a replacement and I keep coming back to the same conclusion: my previous car, a Lexus GS450h, is just better than anything I try. Shame I already had the best specced one in the UK, can't buy another dammit! I'm really struggling to buy a new car...I've driven maybe 30 cars and only the i30N has even stayed on my shortlist. I'm not buying the GS again though, already had the best specced one there is so a worse one feels wrong. That leaves the LC, which I can't afford...damn.

@@ApothecaryTerry yeah it's a problem I find also. Don't get me wrong I absolutely loved the lc500 despite my criticism as you say it's a problem in most things now. If I had the money it would definitely be on my list as was very impressive car and lexus just build quality cars. I've always fancied an isf also. Driving engagement is my thing I've discovered. Haveing had access to a Tesla for a few years the acceleration thing wears off quick and I miss cornering fun which I've since realised is what I like. I would have an LC as a daily though if I could afford to.
@ApothecaryTerry2 жыл бұрын
@@thistimeimhere Totally agree on the engagement. I'm really struggling to find a replacement for my 981CS. I'm looking for something better at motorway miles, by which I mean wiithout ear-splitting tyre noise. Everything I try feels like a boat by comparison, I've narrowed it down to hot hatches (not surprising) and the i30N is winning although I'm hoping to drive a 308 GTi soon. Steering isn't their strength but I'm hoping it's good enough because the engine is a masterpiece from what I've heard. I need to drive another GS because I'm sure the steering in that had far more weight than the B9 S4 and G30 540i I drove last week, but I can't buy another GS450h since I had it in the perfect spec (everything on, tan leather). Might see if I can get a go in an LC just for laughs too- turning up in a Porsche opens many doors I've found! They don't know I can't afford an LC... 😄

I have absolutely no reason to keep mine (a hybrid) but when I see it on the drive I just think sod it and quietly tell myself there are no viable alternatives. Those that could be contenders will generate big maintenance bills whilst having questionable quality and reliability issues. Put honestly, this car is in a class of its own.

These are super cool cars, I was working for lexus when these came out and damn were they lookers. My only dissapointment is that they never made an F version of these like they did the ISF, RCF and GSF, That would have just made these cars that much more appealing in my opinion. Come to think of it, I had heard they were thinking of doing one, but it never made it past an Idea it seems.

Yes, they were working on the LC-F (they were even testing a twin-turbo V8) but they suddenly cancelled it. There's photos of an LC mule with bigger front vents and stacked up exhausts (that's a a characteristic of "F" models)

I bought my sonic red over ocre (tan) MY21 LC500 (base spec with Mark Levinson sound, semi-aniline interior and HUD) after first seeing your review when in the USA. It is fantastic, and 14 months on still feels special every time I drive it. Yes, the infotainment is “awkward” and the car is slightly too big all round but I recently toured the NC500 (do it!) over two weeks with my wife and it managed it with aplomb. And I didn’t see another one over the 1800 miles I covered. What a car…PS I’ve owned five Porsche’s which I also loved but this is definitely more unique.

Was planning on trading my C7 Z06 for one of these last year. Obviously not as raw or as fast as the corvette, but was looking for something fun that would run forever and felt special. Sat down to make the deal happen and was completely disgusted with the sales manager and walked out. It was a MB dealer, not a Lexus.

As a 3x Lexus owner, I genuinely would consider buying a Lexus just because their dealerships are such a stress-free experience. On the other hand, I one turned up to a Merc dealer in a damaged Peugeot and was asked "are you sure you want to buy a Mercedes?" No- it was for my Dad, so he bought a new Audi instead and I bought a Porsche. Merc can sod right off, snobby bastards 😄

Years ago we bought a RX400h from a local dealer, we kept the car for about 6 years and completely loved it. The problem we has was at one of the services we were told one of the rear callipers has seized and needed replacing. I did not beleive this got the car back and inspected it my self. All that was needed was to clean and grease the pins that hold the pads in place, the caliper was not seized, My mother in law liked our Lexus and bought a GS450h (she has now had this for over 10 years and loves it). She had exactly the same experience with her local dealer approx 70 miiles from our dealer. She took the car to a local independent garage she had used before and guess what he just had to clean and grease the pins. Love the cars but really don't trust the dealers.

We have the same (RX400h) that we bought new. At 120,000 miles, the pads needed replacing. The calipers were and are still working perfectly. We do live in an area where it never gets cold enough to snow, so corrosion from salted streets is never a problem.

I'd be the oddball in the Hybrid version, the idea of being able to waft about it near total silence in Beautiful Japanese GT car is extremely appealing. I currently Have a Toyota hybrid so the idea of a V6 "performance" hybrid GT is sooooo me. In Black, with the Tan interior.

I'll join you. As a former GS450h owner, that drivetrain is a work of art. To quote my ex-lodger, who incidentally flex Sir Alex Ferguson and Lando Norris around for a living: "damn, that thing PULLS" - yes, it does 😆 Effective yes, fun, not so much...but I've done fun, I daily drive a Porsche now. I wonder whether the V6 hybrid version is the sweet spot in the range. Only 0.3 seconds slower to 60mph, probably quieter , possibly more torquey at low revs , and about 40% better on fuel ( again according to the Lexus catologue ) . A lovely car .

A truly beautiful creation inside and out and totally unique. But...I think we can agree it's not a sports car. GT yes. Sports car no. I cross shopped one a year or so ago because I was so taken with its looks. It was between it, a Jag F-type SVR and a Porsche 911 Turbo. I wanted a true sports car so it really didn't stand a chance. But wow, what an interior and what styling, really amazing. One of a kind.

Porsche badges = no depreciation, which is why I bought one. Lexus depreciation seems to have totally stopped recently though which is great in a way. Good because they don't lose value, bad because I can't afford to buy one of these! I want an LC... Disclaimer: I'm a 3x Lexus owner so might be biased, but I've driven many, many cars and those Japanese nutters know what they're doing. As I say too much: I'm not sentimental, I don't think they're good because I buy them, I buy them because they're just that good.

Another great review. Thank you. Beautiful car, and always makes me turn my head when one woofles by. The one factor that was not touched on though is the image, however unfair it may be, that the car is considered by some to be a geriatric Porsche replacement driven by seniors. Having said that there are a couple of the old SC430’s in my area, Buckinghamshire, driven by “blue-rinsers”, but there is also a gorgeous electric blue, 22 plate, one owned and driven by a young 30’s exec type, up the road from, so maybe I am being unfair and that image is changing? Love your content and always click on it when I get a “bell”. Keep up the hardworking and diversity.
@Beer_Dad19752 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's unfair for sure that Lexus are seen as a "safe but boring" alternative, given they have produced some absolutely fantastic performance cars over the years - if in very small numbers. Even my humble and fairly common GS460 has an amazing N/A V8 in it - from factory it's shackled with a very quiet exhaust, but that's easy to fix, the transmission is a bit senile in anything other than manual mode, but other than that they are an absolute bargain if you want that N/A V8 feeling, and built so much better than anything you'll find out of Germany the same age.
@MrZennerd2 жыл бұрын
I can see your point, but personally i never judge a car by it's image because it can be very misleading. And this guy proves it, he was among many others who thought that this car is too boring and not exciting enough and only driven by seniors. Until he drove one and everything changed................... . During the testdrive he realized how biased he was all because the misleading image. Here is the LC 500 review from the nice gentlemen and he is a Mercedes AMG GT-s owner. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3qUlnWQiLidqtU

Hi James; every Lexus I've ever seen you review - you've loved, praising the excellence and being more than fair with what I'll call the "quirks". No car is perfect. I've had a variety of Lexus cars, from an early IS200, an early GS300, a 1989 LS400 and so on. I'm now on my 7th, a 2006 GS300 SE-L, It's a phenomenal car; super comfortable, silent, utterly reliable, ridiculously fast! And surprisingly economical. However, it's time for a change; I've looked closely at around 40 different makes and models of cars - and I've come to the conclusion that only another Lexus will do. I'm going for a 2008 LS600H-L. It actually ticked more boxes than I had boxes to tick. I don't need or want a sports car, (I still race, and the track is the best place for top-of-the-limit speed), but I do drive pretty briskly, I believe the LS600H-L will fulfill all my needs as a daily driver. Maybe a Lexus would suit you too. Great reviews, thank you for all of it.

An excellent on point review of this car! I bought a black 2022 coupe two weeks ago. Pics & videos don’t do it justice. When I walked up to the car at the dealership I was in awe of its size and styling. I could barely find 4 coupes for sale in the entire state of California. Concept car looks, luxurious ride, beautiful purr of the naturally aspirated V8, undeniable Lexus quality, definitely value for money-and if those aren’t reason’s enough then I love the fact that in Cal where you see every exotic luxury and sports car, that this car is as you say “criminally overlooked” and therefore so rare that heads turn and cars follow me. Why fidget around with the infotainment when you can use the Dynamic Voice Command to tell the car what you want (phone,audio, nav, poi’s) and the climate concierge feature means you don’t have to try and adjust the settings while driving.
