I don't know why people always refer to the GS as understated car. It has huge road presence. I mean, you see E60/A6 at every corner, and we are so much used to these cars, that it's like you walk by a post. But you see a nice GS with beautiful rims and stance, and it's a head turner. Gorgeous car. Solid and masculine. Not blistering performance, but solid cruiser.

Whenever, I go into a Lexus dealership, they make me feel special. My father owned a Lexus LS400 for 21 years with no mechanical issues. I loved driving that car. The 6 speed transmission makes quite a difference too; the older, 5 speed cars can be thirsty. Mine delivers between 21 & 32 mpg around town and today I achieved 43·7 mpg on the motorway at 72 mph in cruise. This probably owes a lot to the way Lexus tuned it for me, but I'm certainly not complaining

I've got a 2006 GS300. Next gen engine and 6 speed transmission. Makes a huge difference! 25 to 31 mpg around town and driven smoothly at 75 mph on cruise on the motorway; a touch over 40 mpg! These figures are driver only, consumption goes up a little under load, (4 people and luggage). Always remember to increase tyre pressures for extra weight. I've owned the GS300 with the straight 6 and - thirsty! I've also had the LS400; by far my favourite. That V8 is incredibly smooth, and fuel consumption, whilst high, can be lived with: and it's soo worth the extra expense. Sadly, I have to drive a lot of miles each year, so I can't justify too much fuel cost. I'm always amazed at how cheaply these cars can be bought; the LS400 s are hitting high prices now, so it's probably the last chance to find a good one at much under £5,000. Good video Jay, you could do a lot worse than running a 2006 GS300 long-term, I think you'd be very impressed. All that comfort, with a close to 165 mph top-end and acceleration to scare a 911! That's a proper job.

Drove a couple of those when our LS400 was being serviced by the dealer in Ipswich. Yes, they are extemely nice and helpful people. By the way, the LS400 MkIV from 1997 to 2000 is also a bargain. It's the one with all the toys and the most power from the fabulously refined engine. It isn't any less economical than the GS either.

Own 2001 GS300, pushing 230k miles this week. Gonna ride it till one of us dies. Door actuators are not expensive at all, plenty replacement parts on the market. What will you get and won’t allow you to wait to fix is front suspension issues - soon as you get noise out of your control arms or ball joints - fix it right away if you do not want your wheel to go sideways on you while you driving 65mph. And the car is a good eater too, eats a lot and premium gas requirements as well. But worth it.

If you are worried about the door actuators or lights misting over you should just go buy yourself something else. Nothing is close to the build quality of the GS300/GS400s. The problems you will have is this engine has a timing belt. Change it out on time and replace the seals all around and all the wiring at 180k miles. Oil Control Valve for the variable valve timing needs to be replaced before 200k miles and when it has been replaced once every few years. The aftermarket OCVs are cheap and they don't last a long time so get the OEM if you can on that. But really the car is super reliable and with age you will spend money keeping it running.

It’s not true that all Lexus models are built in Japan. The LC, LS, LX, GX and GS are Japanese built without exception I believe at least for the US market. It’s the Tahara plant which is a legend for the LS, GX, IS, and RC. GS and LC are in Motomachi. ES and RX are built in Kentucky and Canada respectively for the US market. The build quality of the ES is very good even in Kentucky. The distinction between Toyota and Lexus apart from engineering is that Lexus plant workers are among the best people they have. They are trained to feel gaps down to a couple of millimeters. The paint quality level is higher than on Toyota even at the same plant. I am a two time LS owner and the cars give you a huge sense of confidence. They are built like no other car. That’s not to say that current models don’t have some faults and weaknesses. But the obsession with quality is impressive.

BTW Jay, the GS mkII is one of the few cars that's as good to ride in the rear as it is in the front. Everyone travels 1st class! Next time, sit in the back with the armrest down & let someone else drive :) I've driven them since 2008. 6 years & 100,000 (LPG converted) miles in a GS300 mkII facelift, then changed up in 2014 to a GS430 Sport (also LPG)...18" Oz Salina Wheels, slightly lowered & uprated suspension, sports grille & spoilers + HID's as standard. Rare car, only made by Lexus for about 18 months prior to the mkIII release.

Best car l have ever owned, now done just over 130,000 & runs like a bird, registered early 2005 l guess it was manufactured to order late 2004, this means it has a cam chain not a cam belt like later models, it uses a little oil which l understand is quite normal, l have it full serviced every year & apart from normal wear & tear is extremely cheap to run, if l wanted to replace this car l would not be happy unless l was able to change like for like, it’s simply the best, better than all the rest !!

I heard the paint is shite so probably will need a pro paint job and lacquered coating. However that's a good investment. Shame about the mpg as I have a bad commute into Leeds every day and it would bankrupt me at today's prices. Might take a look at the hybrid though

I had one of these back in the day, 98 R Reg. Rolled a bit in the corners, an e39 from the same era is a better drive, unfortunately the brake booster issue killed mine and made it uneconomic to repair

Recently owned that shape GS430... felt the engine and gearbox combination was excellent but didn't really gel with the rest of the car. The suspension wasn't as cossetting as it ought to be in a car like that and couldn't help but think an LS400/430 would be better. It wasn't wafty enough either - too much road noise. Plus, that bloody digital clock has no place in an interior in the early 2000's. That makes it sound as though I didn't like it, but I'd still have another actually! It'd even do 32mpg on the motorway.

Amazing how perspectives differ from the US. We have a Lexus GS300. Great car. Gas mileage is good enough. I certainly wouldn't call it a large barge. I drove a Lincoln Town Car. That was a boat. Now driving the Lexus CT200 and it is like a mini car but I love it even though I'm 6'4".

Just from the top of my head I doubt that basically identical cars as the GS300 and the Aristo were manufactured in different parts of the world. It just doesnt make any sense economically. So sure some Lexus may be built exclusively apart from toyota production lines (not sure one thing is better than the other), but apparently some are built in the same exact factory.

Yes thats awesome but where are all the replacement parts for this model,j.c.! Yes this was the sophomore crush of 98, almost unaffordable until as of recent..so yes def emo-related pickup but giving me same feeling/ gig my 93 gs3 gave me. Exhaust leak, temp gauge supervising(hopefully fixed) & that everloving smell of antifreeze (walnuts?)w/no leak. We pay 4-4.30 for 93 but i drive 40 mins to werk n back 5 days a week, thank gosh its not a salary/hrly. Im also an acura man moreso, where at Least i can snag a k series, which still calls for 93..

For a LEXUS they are a let down. Stupid cheap stuff goes bad. The radio display disappears, The rear sub woofer goes bad, the door locks go bad, Alternator went out at 124K. We are not talking a ford or chevy so things like this going bad at 100K or so is BS.
