That's the beauty of many KZbin-channels on cars, that you can subscribe to a few and then choose to watch the videos of the car-models you're interested in or of cars you like to know more about. And variety is what makes the world of cars interesting, ranging from old 2 CV's to the latest Ferrari-model and everything in between. To take a line from The Silence Of The Lambs, we covet what we see every day. In the early 80s, on my way to my grandparents house I would walk past an Audi dealership that had a row of coupes outside, ranging from base model to Quattro. I fell in love with them. In the mid 90s I bought one, a two wheel drive normally aspirated version. It needed, and got, new shocks, and I enjoyed driving it. I gave it to my brother rather than sell it. The only car I’ve still got a longing for is a blue SWB Series 2 Landrover with white wheels. My grandad had one when I was little and I loved it.

In the 70's Down Under in Australia - the GS was fairly rare... people were astonished at the comfort and space for 4 people plus luggage swiftly covering huge distances at 70-80 mph fatigue free... including stunning road holding, ride and brakes.... Maybe the best small car of all time... after the 2CV. A couple of hints. The single spoke steering wheel started with the DS in 1955, off-centre curve for safety and exceptional vision of the dash instruments. Before seat belts it would deflect you inwards and could not stab you... a regular issue at the time. Having driven DSs, IDs, GSs, CXs & 2CVs all with non self cancelling blinks, it was the best. Lift your finger each time you wanted them on or off. Fab in corners, roundabouts, lane changes.. best with the CX & GSA rocker switches...

James: Use ALL the revs does mean use them really ALL! I owned a similar GSA with the same 1299cc 65HP engine and drow it on the German Autobahn using all 8000+ revs the little turbine-like engine offers, averaging 175 km/h on a 4 hour drive! The car doesn´t have a rev limiter and the overhead camshafts boxer engine just likes to rev and revs like hell!
@saxon-mt5by2 жыл бұрын
Around forty years ago my boss was given a GSA as a company car. He hated it, didn't consider it a worthy car for his status, so he always drove it flat out using all the revs in the hope that he would break it. The car loved it, and was still going strong long after he had left the company!

Wow, hard to believe such an old car could take 8000+ rpm for a prolonged time, even if it is technically possible with so small cylinders. Sure the revcounter didnt have quite a bit of error at those revs? 175 is likewise equally fast for so low hp, but also technically possible if you had a tailwind and otherwise favorable weather conditions. Well done.

Drove my boss's GSA back from Heathrow to N. London back in the day. He didn't warn that the throttle tended to stick when pressed firmly to the floor - fortunately not a huge power output. There was a prog on TV showing converted GS being used in Africa with track stretched to equal the spacing of the ruts left by heavy trucks - apparently the air cooled engine was seen as a good thing given the climate.

I really miss the non-self-cancelling indicators on my old Citroens! Turning them off becomes a mindless habit and they are very light to use. On other cars, though, having to overcome a really heavy detente to turn the indicators on is really annoying, which explains why a lot of people don't bother. It's even worse having to do it twice when they cancel just by getting into the turn-lane. This also explains why people turn from the middle of the road, rather than bothering with the turn lane.

Back in '91, on a trip to the UK from Oz, a motor-noter friend loaned me his beat-up old GS Pallas; thank you, David! It was great fun in a Gallic sort of way (funny-French, in other words) but it got us around perfectly well, entertained us with its suspension, was comfortable and economical. I replaced the inevitable door handle (a weak point, those) and was a little surprised at how easy it was for me to replace in inboard front brake pads, as the existing ones were well past their use-by date. All in all, a fun three weeks!

I would love to have a flat four air cooled hatchback. I'd have to sully the interior with a stereo (and maybe a seat, if the squab was horrifically short. Can't abide short squabs - I have legs that are too lazy to support themselves!). But something like this (or a 2CV) would be lovely to tool around in, ferrying dogs and fetching sticks errr shopping and bouncing around enjoying the view while remembering how to drive something with 'character'. Heaven, for me, would be an Avantime with a flat four air cooled apparatus - probably with a laggy turbo and an auto box, just to make sure it didn't try to go all Nurburgring on me and kept to lolloping around, like a box full of people/dogs/personal belongings should. With character - not with Vectra. Also a Caterham/Atom for dry days (because I don't drive the Porsche in the wet anyway - might as well not have a roof). I'm 60, not dead!

I learnt to drive in a GS and had many in the past so,advanced could remove the engine with just a trolley jack.I used to take out the headlights to reach the front spark plugs!! Usually as much oil on the outside of the engine as on the inside but they would always fire up first time or crank using the starting handle -happy days

Ah, the plucky Giselle, what a cracking little car it is too. I met Ian at the northern social and he is a true gent. Wonderful atmosphere at those things; if Carling did car meets ;-) Keep up the videos and hope to see you at a HubNut social some time next year. KZbin has created a wonderful community!

That’s why the festival of the unexceptional is great. I took my Raleigh grifter along last time I went and it got a huge reception 😀😀

Interesting bit of trivia, the chevron was based on a thing that Andre saw while visiting Poland and got inspired by that

Great video as always, but I have a conundrum with channels like HubNut, Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels, and Lloyd's Vehicle Counseling, all of which make great content that I enjoy. There's a sense that because for the most part, they dismiss modern cars (not without valid reasons), they'll celebrate cars which were never meant to be anything but basic transportation. Jay, you provide the perfect balance of New, Modern Classic, and Classic Car content. I think the rest of the channels would look down on a car that was made post-2005. Whether I see a Ferrari F8 Tributo or a E28 M5, I will have the exact same excited overreaction, despite seeing countless KZbin videos on both of them. I love supercars, I love Modern/ Full-On Classics, and I love the cars of my childhood, so I won't be wedded to any type.

I think Ian appreciates modern cars for abilities and road manners but eschews them for their lack of individuality, quirkiness or just personality. He can't tinker with modern cars so theg lose any attraction they might have to him in favour of a bland 80's rotbox that was considered crap when it was first made and is still considered crap by 95% of people.

@@andrewlaw They were crap when compared to other things of the time, but now you get in them - with decent modern tyres on - and they are completely different. They don't weigh anything and feel like they were made to be thrown around, the smaller size makes them easier to place on the road, unassisted steering has a load more feel, and the throttle peddle actually feels like there's something on the other end of it. Yep, they rattle and you really don't want to crash in one, but a Fiat Uno 45 is a lot more fun than you remember it being! Fiat 126; 30 years ago it was pointless, but now i kinda want one and wish we could still have simple little boxes like them

@@chrisdavidson911 Think you're remembering them with rose tinted spectacles. I've had Morris Ital's, MkI Cavalier, MkI Accord, MkII Granada's from the 70's and they were all average at very best. I worked at a car auction for 10 years so I've driven virtually anything available for the UK roads in that time. Yes there are exceptions but they are well documented (Golf GTi, Audi Quattro, Cosworth Fords and my personal favourite the 205Gti). The one thing that unites them is they are all sports orientated and give you a buzz when you drive them. Sure a little Uno, Maestro, etc can be fun as a short term prospect or occasional driver but their shortcomings soon become more hassle than it's worth.
@chrisdavidson9112 жыл бұрын
@@andrewlaw Yeah, nobody ever drove a Morris Ital and thought it was good. You've completely missed the point.

Unlikely to get to a Hubnut meetup but was great to meet Ian when he took my Bravo for a spin in NZ. Variety is the spice of life and both your channels offer plenty. Find the 'behind the scenes' life of KZbinr stuff interesting too. Thanks for sharing that aspect and not the 'influencer ideal' so many pretend is their life

The GS was a good car about from the rust, but rust was very common in the days of the GS. It had some fun things, the suspension was wonderful, self leveling, adjustable height (just a lever next to the driver to adjust it), able to drive on 3 wheels if you have a blow out etc. The body shape is pretty cool even today. There was a cmatic option where the gear lever operated the gearbox and clutch automatically... you just move the stick and it changes. The brakes are ferocious, they basically empty the suspension pressure into the brake cylinders.

One of my friends said that the engine on mine sounded like an angry sewing machine, which was fairly accurate.

Do remember that they sold 2,500,000 of them! And their other quirky products sold well too! Their problems stemmed mostly from bad timing in that the huge development costs of the CX were incurred at the moment of the 1973 oil crisis and the it was “good night Vienna” and Hello Peugeot!

On Ian's channel, there is a video with the early and later GSA side by side. I prefer the earlier one as all the chrome makes it for me, and prefer the dash too. BTW that heater control with the mans head avec chapeau is the same as in our Dyane. You couldn't get more French...I mean, can you imagine the Germans putting a hat on a symbol!

We had a 1.3 GS at home and travelled all over Europe with the family and tonnes of camping gear in it. It even put big cars to shame when it went off road. The suspension was epic, as was the sahara beige color.

Good review. And yes, I am one of those people who subscribe both to HubNut and JayEmm - and I enjoy both. It's a pity you two guys didn't do a like Q & A when you swapped cars - may I suggest that next time you meet one another, that you do this?
