Yes I know, it's a 5 year old video, I know this probably won't even get noticed, but I felt I had to comment. I have just acquired an A8L, 2006MY so a D3 4E version (series 2), 72k on the clocks, FSH. It has the 4.2 V8 BiTDI. I recently drove to Cornwall in it, 300+ miles from where I live, the only thing that stopped me going any further was the North Adlantic. I averaged 35mpg, I wasn't going mad, neither was I treating it as an economy drive. It's got good spec, £77,000 as it came out of the showroom. I have the sales receipt. I've had it since Febuary, and honestly I love it. I had to change 2 of the tyres last month, pothole got me, one punctured, one with a bulge in the sidewall. Despite them being 255/45 R19 100Y AO, they didn't break the bank at £187 each, fitted etc. Would I have another when I want to change this one, very possibly.

Great video,nice to see the A8 get some love and an objective review. One thing to correct is that the MMI system precedes and is far more intuitive than iDrive -its a pity that the now new generation A8 has reverted to touch screens :(( Own a 2011 A8 3.0T which I've had since nearly new and agree that it's an incredible bargain to get into provided that nothing breaks (fingers crossed it doesn't, haven't had any issues as yet with nearly 8 years of ownership and 110 000kms) and one can get past the cost of Tyre replacement (I've got the 20s and being Quattro it's preferable to change all 4 at once). Best wishes from Johannesburg

Another great review. I've covered many miles in three of them, all V6 diesels, and the overall impression is how brilliant they are dynamically. They're Incredibly capable in all weathers and feel incredibly secure. The downside for me was that the ride just wasn't good enough for a luxury car. In Comfort it floats along very nicely until it hits a pot hole when it then feels like you've just driven over a small land mine. The last one I drove was a LWB version and was better but still not brilliant. Talking of Ronin, France still does it better and my previous Citroen XM VSX was way ahead in the ride department. but the Audi was much nicer inside.

Definitely more used bargains! But also keep the shiny, expensive stuff too, we all like drooling over the dream machines too I’m sure. Incidentally I was bored and scouting around on AutoTrader the other day, and found a lovely Audi S8, 5.2 V10 with 96k on the clock, I think it was an 08 plate for a fraction under £10k. Incredible value to say you’ll feel like The Transporter every time you get in it. One very hilarious way of getting to your bankruptcy hearing.

I bought the generation before D3 A8 for a bit over 6k 2 years ago. Went for a 4.2 v8 TT D AWD which has 325 ho 600NM torque std (same as this one has been chipped up to) but the 4.2 can be chipped to 400hp 800NM. They dont rust (aluminium) are fast (relentless rather than 'quick') relatively economical, not flashy, nicely put together and immensely comfortable. The Bose system is remarkable too. Yes the £560 road tax is a bit painful but my depreciation is less than £500 a year. I'm always amazed at people losing 3k a year+ on their car baulking at my road tax figure! I would Strongly recommend an A8.

The 2019 with rear wheel steering and many changes inclduding different spec tires is more of a luxury ride, but feels a bit disconnected or loose . I have the settings at max sport but still it floats a bit like a older caddilac. . Overall its an improvement but this car was designed for confort. What you get for your money, is huge repair bill. If you can't afford it new or next to new, you're not going to be able to afford thr upkeep. And the car will end up being one of them bins that look good but in reality is shit. Basically people buy these old, put a private plate on, and make it look like they are doing much better than they are. While driving a car that deteriorates month on month.

Reddylion I don't know what Indias is like, but I wouldn't buy a new diesel now. (I'm a diesel fan). In the uk, there is a war on diesel, and diesel is going to lose. If you send decent money on a nearly new saloon in 5 years your not going to be able to sell it. Well not unless your almost giving it away. India may be different, but sadly here, diesel if off the table for anyone buying. We could use this to our advantage, and in 5 years pick up a very cheap diesel saloon, with the knowlage its not going to have a sell on value. Ie run it till it's dead.

The car has chip tuning. That's why you're so impressed with its "get up and go". That 250 hp 3 L TDI needs chip tuning on an A8. Because, in stock form, you get 250 hp only at the red line (4500 rpm) and you're never at red line in an A8 in normal traffic. So you're basically only using 180 hp in real life at 2600 rpm or 140 hp at 2000 rpm. Chip tuning it to 320 hp changes the character of the engine so it gives you 250 hp at 2600 rpm instead of at 4500 rpm. And that's much better. The turbine now gets to its maximum rpm much sooner and it's basically always on. That's why there's much less turbo lag. VW group can now get 240 hp from a 2 L TDI. So 250 hp from a 3 L TDI is too low. This engine begs for chip tuning. You really wouldn't be impressed with the stock engine tuning.

JayEmm on Cars Well my GF brother has 2010 S5 and i’d like to get a coupe but i also like the larger sedans. Seems like every S5 i find carfax always shows something that has been fixed or replaced with low mileage S5. i’d prefer the V8 A8

Is it true that all the bodywork, the doors and hood and everything is alluminum?

I believe so, they actually did a lot to try and keep the weight down

I’m now looking for a wafto-barge to go to and from Cornwall. This or S Class or 7 Series?
@JayEmmOnCars Жыл бұрын
S-Class for luxury. A8 for subtlety. 7 for tech.

JayEmm on Cars That's a shame. Could you do some more on the Excel, and maybe some other classic Lotuses? Aside from the first video on it and then you saying you're getting rid of it, I've not seen anything.

It went, that's why. A car I would definitely own again and hopefully might

The boot in the previous version is a hell of a lot bigger
@johntheman20066 жыл бұрын
ben ventura Yup. My D3’s boot is HUGE, in volume at least. I believe the later D4’s boots were larger, somehow.

John Medhurst They we’re indeed. As was the Facelift D4 introduced in 2014. The issue with the pre-Facelift boot was the electronics that are usually tucked away in the side panels were instead fitted to the back of the rear seat therefore impacting the available boot space! In 2014 Audi saw the error of their ways and relocated the modules back in their original location. I’ve had four 8’s over the last 12+ years starting with a D2 S8, D3 W12 and both pre & post Facelift D4’s. Awesome cars and you get such a lot for your money...
