Lovely car on track and fun driver in the Alp passes. Only flaw was the lack of steel nets protecting the oil coolers in the front. The basically just keep going left and you'll end up back at where you started. This is a great little route and one that's got a bit of everything in it. Where you do the last left turn to head back, this little back round is a peach. Tight and twist but one that you can carry just enough speed to keep it interesting, also got a nice yump in the middle.

Maybe I should let you drive my 997 GTS in the spring, I feel it's a much nicer road car than the GT3’s, far far shorter gearing,a nicer road use engine and better suspension. .1 PASM is dire. Gear shift also nicer than GT3 shifter. Plus wider track like the 991.1 RS and much lighter wheels. That gt3 needs a set of plush shocks and the cup final drive really to make it enjoyable for road use, be hard to get that car out of 2nd gear in the UK 😂
@MrMe-xc5zz8 күн бұрын
I’ll take the 996.2. It’s a little more track focused. The limited slip diff on the .1 997 got less aggressive when they introduced PASM. Both models have crap LSD’s but 997’s require a way more pricey rebuild vs 996’s. Meanwhile, the PASM tries to compensate the lesser LSD with rear brakes. So, you have to chunk the entire thing and upgrade to the 996 version to out muscle the PASM effect and get the true mechanical diff performance. For the money the 996 is just better value. Uglier, well, of course it is but who cares it drives like an animal.

Personally not a fan of the 997.1 (3.6) Engine is indeed the highlight with tons of character but you really need to keep it on the boil to get the thrills, below 4k rpm you barely call it a sportscar. Gear shift and pedals configuration is completely spot on, but the ratios spoil the fun - too long. And this is where it ends for me - handling is tricky. 997's front end was a disaster especially under acceleration and the rear felt like it was trying to follow what the front was doing in slow motion. I totally get why its got a strong fan base but if I had to go for a gt3 i'd get a 991.1.

Good review but with big que, it was the 991.1 GT3 3.8L (the only Porsche GT3 not to have a race engine) that had engine issues not the the 991.2 GT3 which has the 4L race engine, the 4L race engine is much better than the Mezger engine, much more mid-range, revs to 9,000RPM and pulls up to 525PS and 470nm. Both the 997.1 and .2 GT3/GT3 RS are exceptional. IMO peak Porsche generation is 991 e.g. 991 911 R, 991.2 GT3 touring and 991.2 GT3 RS. The latter being as quick as the 992 GT3 RS but sans the BS (ask evo to explain why the 992 GT3 RS was slower round Anglesey Coastal than the both the 991.2 GT3 RS and 991 GT2 RS in their own testing).

I have a 991.2 GT3 Clubsport manual and drove it back-to-back with a 992 GT3 on the same roads. The newer car feels bigger even though it also has rear steering, and the double wishbone front end that makes it faster on track is more tetchy on real world roads. I would not have one even if Porsche offered me a direct swap. I drove the 997.2 GT3 RS in 3.8 and 4.0 litre forms when they were new and prefer the 3.8 for the way the more over-square motor revs. I drove the Shark Werks 4.1 (based on the 3.8 RS) in the US a few years back, and despite its larger capacity the fact that it is both bored and stroked to a similar ratio as the 3.8 maintains the free-revving character but with 550hp and commensurate torque. You can basically drive one gear higher everywhere! For me the 997.2 GT3 RS 3.8 and 991.2 GT3 manual and Touring are peak GT3. Finally, the engine, chassis and aero of the much vaunted 991.1-based 911R feel one step behind the 991.2 GT3 Touring, which they are.

@@iankuah8606 Good comments and agree on the 3.8L in the 997.2 GT3 RS and never really got the love for the 997 GT3 RS 4L - interesting experiment and like you I preferred the 3.8 Mezger in the 997.2 GT3 RS. Also agree with your comments on the 992 GT3, I didn't like it, I feel they made it too stiff (wheel rates were too high) and then compounded that with having an overly quick rack which made it feel nervous rather than sublime. Big call on the 911 R Vs Touring, both are outstanding, I really liked the suppleness of the R and the zingy light weight fly wheel. The 991.2 GT3 touring is an all time great for sure.

Am I the only one that actually likes the design of the 996 interior better than the 997? I know those early cars with plastic dashboards were dreadful, but in a 996 Turbo or other car with leather it's quite nice and the design elements themselves with all the swoops and curves really work. On another note, one thing I learned from test driving more than one of the same kind of used car is not to draw too many conclusions about a whole model run from a single drive in one vehicle. I think something to keep in mind when evaluating a whole run of GT3s like this will be that for example with the steering weighting and feel there are factors at play like the age of the suspension, the alignment settings, what kind of tires the car is running, mods if any, etc. that can play into how the car may feel and handle. Looks like maybe this one is on PS4S whereas others may run Cup 2s or other sticky compounds in the warmer months? That will make a difference. So yes you can only report on what you're experiencing and feeling, but I'm keeping a bit of an open mind about the more subtle differences. Eager to see more here.

I had a Manthey 996.2 gt3, then the 997.1 gt3. I didn’t get another till the 991.2. The 991.2 was my favorite . I didn’t like the 997.1 wing Taco Shell wing vs the 991.1/991.2 wing . I much preferred the 991.2 front splitter. Plus it was $150,000 vs $275,000 for the 992. And while the metzger motor was mythical, the 9A1 in the 991 series is plenty strong. I didn’t like the flimsy oil filter of the 997.1 vs the big Mahle filter in the 991.2 The obvious weakness in the 997 gt3 is the manual transmission vs the PDK. Miss a gear in the 997 or guess the wrong gear and a Honda R type will leave you behind. The PDK solves that issue. The lack of torque means you must be in the correct rev range to take advantage of the power of the engine. Choose wrongly and you’ll be way behind. The PDK always picks the right gear and you’ll never lose to an M3

@@Driftuner N/A engines need revs to make peak power. I remember driving the Gordon Murray designed Light Car Company Rocket in the early '90s, and revving to 6,500rpm as you would in most fast road cars at the time. Wondering why not much was happening, and as the steering wheel rim blocked the top of the rev counter I ducked down and saw that the redline for the 143hp, 1,000cc Yamaha motorcycle engine was actually 11,000rpm! Using the full 11,000rpm this 385kg car went like the clappers!

You need to drive it a bit harder - it's a 911 so up near the redline is best. BTW - it's not as good as everyone says - it's better !

I’m sorry but at least check your stats. 996.2 gt3 has a much slower steering than 997.1 gt3 (997.1 were the first to have variable ratio). It’s such a big difference that the first time I drove 997 I was shocked at how much more responsive it felt.

To my ears the best sounding GT3s Are the more recent 992.2 of 2022 to present.. Is it for to retire 9000rpm redline??

Kind of expensive, the regular 996 Carrera you can pick up for around £10k.

@@AntoniusTyas Yea but it's 1/10th the price. I think most people could live with that? Or a Boxster considering it's a convertible which is pretty nice for a sports car.
