Jamel_AKA_Jamal , how did you know I was going to ask where that shirt came from? That is awesome. Great choice of music too. When I first heard it something something years ago, I remember thinking “Wow! This is not like anything I’ve ever heard before!” Of course, I’m not sure that I even knew who Miles Davis or John Coltrane were back then, but I believe that it was the Grateful Dead that helped pave the way for me to discover those jazz legends among other great musicians.

The way the jamming in this song works is basically: someone plays something cool, the other members of the band hear it, they play around that theme for a minute or two, build it up to a crescendo, then disintegrate down back into "search mode". Truly a musical exploration. Thanks for the video. All of us deadheads are very impressed by this jump into the deep end, and we're glad you enjoyed listening!

I actually think that's why your channel is so successful, and that's why we love you. BTW, to hear tehm do a more straight ahead rock song , check out their New years Eve '78 Winterland Ballroom performance cover of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away". The mid -late 70s was when I was seeing them live and they were just phenomenal. Their best period, IMO.

77-80 Jerry was him transforming into legendary status. By 1981 there’s was nothing that man could do. I bounce around years like any Deadhead.. but man those 71-73 shows were unbelievable. The energy from Jerry and specially Bill with Mikey absent were phenomenal. In conclusion, the Dead are the greatest band IMO

Well this is indeed a surprise. When I suggested some live Grateful Dead, well you just dove for that big old fish in the room. Probably not the path I would have chosen to introduce you to the depth of what the live band brings to the table. But if you're gonna pick a Dark Star, this is a fine version to pick. Honestly I'd be more intrigued on your reaction from St. Stephen-->Eleven from the same disk. Not many people have the patience, to review/react Dark Stars tbqh. The lyrics are like two tent posts to hold up whatever the band wants to do. Each one is different. Yeah Dark Star is long. This is actually a medium sized one. 5/11/72 is a goliath. Odd note. 10/9 is a famous anniversary of this very song. In 89' they brought it back from a long hibernation. Weird that you picked the same day and month? Maybe you were meant to do this today. If it isn't painfully obvious, I'm a huge deadhead, and this reaction was a wonderful treat. Thank you. If I may, try 5/8/77's Scarlet Begonias-->Fire On The Mountain. It'll steal that face right off your head. The hole goes deep Jemel. So very very deep. I hope you come by for a swim sometimes. The water is always warm.

Hey there. You mentioned that when you were listening you were picturing a "dark star crashing..." One of the most powerful moments of my career chasing the GD around was on 7/13/84. It was at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA, and it was a Friday the 13th with a full moon overhead. Needless(?) to say, I was on a perfect dose of LSD, and was having a great night at the first of three shows in a row at this gorgeous amphitheater. The band had left the stage after the second set, and the crowd was cheering for an encore. The bass player (Phil) came out, and said something to the effect of "have a little patience, we're going to try something a little special tonight, one night only," and the crowd went ballistic. A short time later the band returned to the stage. I was up on the hillside, and there's a great view from up there during the day of the Berkeley campus, the campanile, and on out over the bay, and on a clear afternoon you can even see the Golden Gate Bridge. Anyway, we're all wondering what's up, and then it starts: the band is playing the most sought after rarity - DARK STAR!!!!!! Everybody is ecstatic, whooping it up, shocked at their good luck. It hadn't been played since 12/31/81, and this was the first one I was seeing. So they're playing through the intro, the initial cheers of excitement have died down, and then suddenly from behind us there comes a massive, sizzling shooting star. The kind that has chunks flying off, you know? Like fucking major! It basically bisects the sky over the amphitheater, and then courses down into the horizon over beyond where the Golden Gate Bridge is. Nobody down lower could see this (unless they happened to be looking up), nor could anybody on the stage, but you couldn't miss it if you were on the hillside. If you listen to some audience tapes you can hear the second roar of the crowd after the initial "holy shit, they're playing Dark Star" roar. And within about ten seconds of this blazing spectacle passing over head, Jerry steps up to the microphone, and sings the first line "Dark Star crashes, pouring its light into ashes." I kid you not. I just got chills typing that out because it still blows my mind that this happened. I was already a committed "deadhead" at that point, but this synchronistic moment just further cemented my obsession with them, and I also realized on that night that even the gods above loved the Grateful Dead.

This was from a brief period when Grateful Dead had two keyboardists, the inimitable Ron "Pigpen" McKernan and Mr. Tom Constantin, whom I once had the pleasure, honor and good fortune to meet and talk to for about ten minutes, a great dude. I liked this reaction. Dark Star is deep in the heart of the Dead experience, and is not exactly beginner Dead. Since you so often focus so much on lyrics I wasn't sure you would get this one. I am glad that you were able to let Jerry take you for a ride. I saw it happen in your face, today you learned something real about The Grateful Dead vibe. Grateful Dead concerts were a social event, not just a music festival. It was common knowledge that LSD was prevalent. The Dead just jammed for 20, 30, 40 minutes. They set the tone and the audience responded. They "controlled" everyone by the ups and downs of tempo. They would rarely play the same songs in consecutive concerts. They also encouraged people to do bootleg recordings. "Deadheads" would swap tapes. There would be ads in trade papers and magazines by people who offered to trade live recordings because no 2 concerts were the same. This song is off the live album, "Live Dead" released in 1969. Jerry Garcia was the group's lead guitarist and sometime lead vocalist. He was addicted to heroin and he OD'd a few times before the White Horse eventually provided his demise. Quite a player! I was able to attend 2 Dead concerts (1981, San Diego and 1983, Virginia Beach, VA). And if any of you are wondering, I'm an old school hippie chick🐥 and yes, I indulged! "What a long strange trip" it was both times!! 😉✌👀🧜‍♀️🌈☮💜

While Jerry Garcia unfortunately became addicted to heroin, he smoked it (did not shoot up) and never OD'ed on it. He did not die from heroin (which he stopped using prior to his death) but from a heart attack related to diabetes and smoking cigarettes.

It wasn’t heroin that killed Jerry Garcia, it was all the cigarettes and ice cream. Paraphrasing Bob Weir after Jerry’s death but you get the idea. The latter part of his life gets distilled down to “well he was a heroin addict”, which does not tell the complete story.

I love punk and hip-hop mostly but will always have a special spot for the dead. Saw them at Rich Stadium, Buffalo in 92, and still feel blessed. Garcia was one of a kind. You know when a track is over 10 minutes you’re gonna head some genius along the way. The smile on your face is why the band is one of the biggest selling live acts of all time. Jerry’s guitar tone is just ... beauty.

This is my GREATEST SONG EVER, if you can even call it a song. It's more like a symphony, with complex themes that are developed, recede, intertwine and then reappear. I'm so glad you got to listen to this. But this is one song you really must listen to many times to fully get it. I hope you do. I remember my first listen. I got so little out of it compared to what I get now, "knowing" the piece and anticipating what comes next if you know what I mean. As you noticed, you can listen to just the just the rhythm guitar or the organ or the bass (especially the bass) and they are all playing their own thing. Yet they all come together with the lead guitar (Jerry Garcia) in this swirling sound that takes you away. I loved the comment someone made "The bus came by and Jamel got on!" Jamel, if you don't know exactly the full meaning of what that is a reference to, check out this other incredible song by the Grateful Dead - "That's It For The Other One". It's another trip, literally. Start with the album version off of the Anthem Of The Sun album. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that one!

Jamel, I'm all smiles sitting here! I've been asking you for this since I discovered your channel. This is the song that sent me to 100's of Dead shows since 1978. The Dead started playing Dark Star in 1967, and at that time it ran about 5 to 7 minutes long. During 1968, it grew in length to 10 minutes, 12, 15, 18, 20 plus minutes. By early 1969 when this was recorded, it was hovering around 20 to 25 minute. The band slowly discovered this was their vehicle to go anywhere musically, or at times non-musically. It could be soft and sweet or angry and violent. And that's what pulled in the early Dead Heads. Eat some acid and let's see where the band takes us tonight. It was an adventure that could bring on any number of emotions...just through the music. At the time this was recorded, they band consisted of two guitar players, two drummers, two keyboard players and one bass player. And the trust between all of them could take you to musical places you never knew possible. Thanks for this Man. There's plenty more Grateful Dead to be explored. Shall we go, you and I?

A friend gave this album to me in 1971. He got it for X-Mas and he couldn't stand it. I listen to it about 1-2 times a month....still! Haven't seen Larry in years, but I still thank him for turning me on to the album.

I am 57 and a Deadhead for 40 yrs now. Saw them live here in germany in 1990. Thank you for inviting us to this trip, @Jamel_AKA_Jamal! I love almost all their songs, but "Looks like Rain" and "Stella Blue" are my eternal favorites! I have a double CD set which is a cut-together "endless" version of "Dark Star". The 2 CD set is called "Grayfolded", 1 hour 45 minutes of Dark Star cut together from snippets of many different DS live versions they played over many years. Just wonderful!

There live music is very rhythmic and melodic, it pulls you into a trance, i was fortunate to see them in the mid-90s before Jerry Garcia passed, I was never a real big fan growing up until I seen them live and witnessed the whole culture that followed them, a very unique experience!
