Rush Trivia: Their record company was ready to dump them after they brought them this album (Caress of Steel). They had instructions to make the next album more radio friendly or they were dumped. Rush, being Rush gave them 2112, against all advice, but it was a huge success. From that moment on, Rush were free to make whatever music they wanted, without record company interference. You could say, they defeated the Necromancer!

Gerard Rinaldi First time I heard Rush, When their second album was released, I knew I was hearing something new and powerfully incredible. Just 3 guys, the best of their kind and it blew me away. Not until I saw them play live in Cincinnati did I honestly believe it was just those three powerful musicians. It was similar to the first time I heard Led Zeppelin, their first album, I knew I’d never be the same. Life changing. Same with Pink Floyd and very few others. You can’t compare these groups, they are the best of the best. Now more than 50 yrs later, they remain the best of the best. Like I said, there are few others that I consider to be in this category. It saddens me to see these Lions if the industry fall as they and we get older. Fuck, I’m in Hospice care now with COPD. I’m not sad to go however, I’ve had an incredible life. And I’ve made arrangements to be listening to these amazing tunes from my very favorite groups as they “play me out”. ❤️💋💔 Annie in TN

Rush is one of those rare bands who could tell an entire, comprehensive story with clear beginning, middle, end, and conflict between good and evil, with nothing but an instrumental performance. And you'd be able to follow the entire story.

That sound at the break after the-"They bow defeated" is By-Tor coming to slay the Necromancer. Same sound is on By-Tor and the Snow dog. Those words rang true as critics and the label didn't get it. The resulting support tour didn't go well either. Ticket sales were down and the band coined the tour the "down the tubes tour". So with pressure from the label and a weak tour when they went back into the studio they agreed if were going out were going out in the biggest way, thus 2112 emerged out of a lot of frustration and angst. It was suspected 2112 wouldn't sell well either but sold like hot cakes. By November of 1977 it hit Gold at 500,000 copies and since has sold more than 3 million.

Because Peart produced unusual sounds regularly and Geddy had an encyclopedia of sound between keyboards, synthesizers and bass pedals, he was doing the work of about three different musicians PLUS all the vocals. One thing that could never be said of the members of Rush is that they are without talent, musicianship or skill! I love every note they’ve played. Period. And will sadly miss the words and brilliance of Neil Peart. RIP😔

As others have undoubtedly stated in the comments: The Necromancer is Sauron in Lord of the Rings. That was how he was identified in Dol-Guldur when Gandalf went to see if the evil of Sauron was rising again. However this is simply one of the references to LOTR and the song is referring to Alex, Geddy and Neil approaching the 'necromancer' of the record label, essentially saying that they want to do their own thing and By-Tor coming to save them can be seen as their music 'By-Tor and the snow dog' is what is freeing them from the chains of the record industry. I think you understood it pretty well, this is a super deep cut.

My heart is still hurting since Neil’s passing. Such a tremendous loss to his family, band mates, friends and fans. You are right in saying that Neil was a lyrical genius! I’ll just add that he was also a rock drumming genius. Rush believed that this album was the greatest album written at that point but the record company didn’t see it that way as album sales were not good. Mercury records gave them one more album to record and that was it. They recorded the album 2112 and the rest is history.

One thing you need to notice in many of Rush songs is the band changes the mood of the music depending on what is happening. The first half of this song is dark and gloomy but when the Necromancer is defeated, the music becomes happy and celebratory. The talent of these three men is unbelievable!!!!

Brother, from a life long Rush fan , having seen them in concert 3 times in Toronto (all at the Maple Leaf Gardens), can I tell you how much I envy you for the blessing of watching you hear Rush for the first time? I find it interesting that Jamel mentions "they bow defeated" and this album was almost the death of Rush. Instead of bowing to defeat, they essentially said "if we go out, we go out on our terms" and released 2112. I can't imagine what my life would have been like for the past 40+ years if Rush wasn't a part of it. So many songs take me back to a certain part of my life. Going through a playlist of all Rush songs from A-Z is like watching home movies of myself, jumping back and forth through the years. Welcome Jamel to the official Rush fan club! :)

The Fountain of Lamneth is a journey from birth to death... If you enjoyed The Necromancer, you will be overcome with emotion when you hear "Fountain"... It runs deep. One of the greatest epics from this era. This album came out in 1975.

Caress of Steel and 2112 are both masterpieces. Hearing one song from one of these albums is like looking at one section of masterpiece painting. They were produced to be heard from beginning to end. Thanks for doing this request! Psst... you have to listen and react to some old YES pre 1990. They will take you places you have never been. Start with Starship Trooper then maybe Siberian Khatru. Their playlist is lengthy.

Your interpretation of Rush is awesome.This was what I was listening to in the 70's and not many girls were into Rush then. For the last FORTY YEARS ( You have have yet to even touch on the body of work!) I have been inspired, amazed, and enlightened by every single one of their albums in one way or another. I love your channel and your grooving to one of my all time favorite bands Rush! Caress of Steel was the first Rush cassette tape I bought with my lawn mowing money in 1988 when I was 12 years old and I still listen to this and all their great albums today. To me, this song is the greatest rock and roll song ever made. Huge Tolkien influenced lyrics, big homage to The Who toward the end of the track. When 1 track can summon a range of intense emotions like this one can, it speaks of the greatness. RIP Neil Peart. RUSH FOREVER!!!

Jamal, I don't think it's possible to overstate how important from a cultural, humanistic standpoint, what you're doing really is. Way back in 1990 I was a stupid kid from South Dakota who found himself in the middle of the Sahara desert, in the US Air Force, during operation desert storm. I discovered this song, and subsequently the rest of this album, one magic day with a Sony Walkman (this was back in the day of cassette tapes) on a walk in the open desert. You are such an important voice in overcoming the generational, and racial, conflict that so pervades our nation today. Thanks for being so fearless and for allowing me to hear all of this music that I've loved for decades for the first time, all over again, through your eyes.

That “brooding in the tower” is still one of the most metal things I’ve ever heard. Rush is seldom tinged with metal, but Geddy’s delivery is black hole-heavy every time. I adore this record. The Fountain of Lamneth is my favorite song of theirs where Neil beautifully interprets the innocence of childhood, the hardships of early adulthood, falling in love, and ultimately unveiling ‘a’ meaning for life, all told as an epic journey.

Dude! This is one of my personal faves by Rush. I remember when I read about the Caress Of Steel album being written about and during some intense acid trips by the band, I dropped some acid back in the day and listened to the entire album. Wow! Such profound lyrics and ambience! Jamel, I highly recommend the closing track from Caress Of Steel, which is called The Fountain Of Lamneth. Those lyrics are sooooo profound! Love the channel, bro, you're a very perceptive, intelligent, open-minded dude, and it's cool to see my snow-dogs from Rush getting the love they deserve!
