@Jamel_AKA_Jamal I really think you need to check this amazing human out... Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (22 January 1971 - 25 July 2017), also referred to since his death as Dr G Yunupingu, was an Indigenous Australian musician. Born blind Geoffrey was a multi-instrumentalist, he played drums, keyboards, guitar (a right-hand-strung guitar played left-handed) and didgeridoo, but it was the clarity of his singing voice that attracted rave reviews. He sang stories of his land both in Yolŋu languages such as Gaalpu, Gumatj or Djambarrpuynu, a dialect related to Gumatj, and in English. Although his solo career brought him wider acclaim, he was also formerly a member of Yothu Yindi, and later Saltwater Band. He was the most commercially successful Aboriginal Australian musician at the time of his death. Here's the link for one of his songs love and peace. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqetgYt3i5WYeJY

Rogerina is a cute girl. The problem is Americans don't understand British humor. Check out Monty Python, you'll see men dressed as women quite regularly. Also when he's talking about how Freddie gets into the role he's totally correct. Freddie was an entertainer and threw himself into every role. No one could control a crowd like Freddie. Check out the Live aid show, and others where he works the crowd.

idk, there has been a few popular crossdressing males. One of the earliest that comes to mind is Milton Berle. Others off the top of my head were John Candy, and John Ritter. But what do I know? I'm an American who likes British humor. Grew up with my father watching UK shows like 'Black Adder', 'Are You Being Served', and 'Mr. Bean'. With 'Are You Being Severed' My personal favorite. :)

I'm an American who watched Monty Python's Flying Circus on TV as far back as 1974, when I was in high school, and then there was The Avengers, in the 60's. I was a huge Emma Peel fan as a child. I remember watching To The Manor Born, with Penelope Keith, somewhere back there. So when I hear people talk about Americans not understanding British Humour, I can't help feeling that you are coming up just a tad short, in your research.

Freddie was a great fan of Ballet; the dance sequence included members of the English National Ballet and was based upon L'apres Midi d'n faune by Debussy. The crowd sequence of men in miner's hats was a nod to the coal strikes that were happening at the time. Altogether a great video of a terrific song, thank you for reacting to it.

Coronation Street is still on the television here in the UK 6 times a week (we have just gone back to six episodes per week after filming was suspended due to Covid-19 but have still been getting 3 episodes per week). I only learned by watching people like Jamel react to this song that it wasn’t Freddie’s idea! SIDE NOTE: Roger Taylor looks like Raquel one of the characters in Coronation Street in this video. Well to me he does anyway. 😂 You are very welcome Oscar.

kleinnel Wow! That’s amazing I knew that Corrie had quite a big Canadian following but I didn’t know that it went so far back. Thank you for telling me that! I have been watching since I was little and I’m 23 now... I have been watching ‘Classic Corrie’ after itv started showing all the episodes they made from 1990. I wonder how long they can keep that going as they show two episodes per day! We are on 97/98 now. I see that your Dad was drawn into it and probably started secretly liking it himself. It is quite a contrast isn’t it, it’s so fun and lighthearted, although at the time it was deemed highly offensive and unnatural. I personally love it, but maybe that has something to do with the generation I’m from although there were people who fully supported the video at the time.

It isn't. The song is written by bassplayer John Deacon, who was getting fed up with Brians compulsory guitar solo, so he put in a keyboard solo. Deacon wrote another one bites the dust, which was a huge hit with American R&B audiences in 1980. The cross-dressing in I want to break free, a mere four years later, was a bit much for the prudish Americans, which caused a downfall for Queens popularity in the States.

@Gavin Holt - From what I’ve read, John Deacon, who wrote the song, is the one who was getting tired of the compulsory guitar solo for Brian May, and wanted something different. A session musician whom the band knew, Fred Mandel, played a synth solo on the record. What John might’ve felt was ironic is that for live performances, Brian played guitar during the synth solo part of the song.

4:28 - That, my friend, is a synth. John Deacon, who wrote the song, insisted he didn't want guitar solos in the song, so they got Fred Mandel, a canadian musician who usually collaborated with Queen, to create and play a synth solo. Brian May only played the solo on guitar live.

A little backstory on this video. MTV started in 1981. Their big thing was that they would not be ruled by the sponsors. No censorship. Not refusing things they way radio was doing. In '84 Queen made this video based on a British soap opera title Coronation Street, the opening stacks, and the "characters" are straight from the t.v. show. The video hit MTV here and sponsors put pressure on the higher-ups of MTV. Before you could shake a finger they effectively "banned" this as leading to transvestism and such. The Brits thought we were nuts. The Mid-Western states freaked out and this was one of the main reasons that main-stream America turned cold on Queen.
