A lot of creators sign away the rights to their creations to get them on TV. For example, John Kricfalusi was fired from Ren & Stimpy in its second season and they produced several seasons without him.

I'm guessing they took a shot of Beavis when he's usually standing on the right side of the screen, and just flipped it to put him on the left side, which would mirror the writing on his shirt. It's crazy how much more dialogue Beavis and Butt-Head both have in the first season. Nowadays, they're purely one-liner characters with occasional sentences. Even Courage started the same way. I can definitely see why Daria was interesting enough for her own show. She actually feels like a good contrast between the main characters and is willing to stoop to their level of humor. Pretty glad she got her thing.
