James, you have a very valid point in that original patina on an original car is truly the desirable option. The realistic problem is that they are now 67 years old and the parts and the cars are getting scarce . This guy's car is really well presented and about the only thing I could think of that would really jump out at me is that the Subaru water-cooled engine doesn't have the air-cooled clattering noise and I'm a bit more attuned to that than some folks might be. I used to sell BMW/VW/Subaru in another life-time and a manager that I had previously worked for stopped by to check out the WRX. They were just coming out at that time. He was a "big-time" Porsche fan and owner. While we were on the way back to the shop, after a rather quick run through a local canyon twisty-bit he commented that it really sounded a lot like an old 356 because of the similar boxer engine, it just didn't have the air-cooled rattle. He certainly liked the power though.

The boxer engine was patented in 1896 by engineer Karl Benz who called it the contra engine. Subaru paid Porsche allot when they chose to go for boxer engine's the first Subaru engine's where mostly German ( Porsche ) engineered. This is a Replica anyway so why feel fooled........... The guy did A GREAT JOB!!!! Personally think people should respect all the hours sweat blood and probably tears just to build this beautiful car! that was bad luck, and also it might have been a lotus...... as he had a lotus eleven on order, but they changed the brakes on it from disc to drum as they didnt want to give the americans that technology so it took longer to get the car ready. and thus we'd be talking about a lotus that did it, and not a 550 if they hadnt done that.. and also a porsches a professionals tool and they do not work well with people who do not respect the car and its limits, and what do americans do all the time, take it to the limit and break it. as overall you have to respect the car, and look after it, especially on a porsche as its slow in, fast out all the way, otherwise most of the weight breaks away, and once you get that down their very impressive cars. its just the reverse of an american big block muscle car, which takes abit of getting used to.

Jedidah Fire so here is an actual definition of a replica, note the last sentence you must feel pretty dumb now huh: Background: On Dec. 4, 2015, lawmakers in Washington, DC enacted legislation allowing low volume manufacturers of replica vehicles to sell turn-key cars to their customers. The historic law expands customer options. Enthusiasts can still build custom cars and construct kit cars on their own. However, they will also have the option of buying a replica just like any other new car and driving it off the lot (or from the factory). Definitions: Low volume manufacturer: a motor vehicle manufacturer whose annual worldwide production (including by a parent or subsidiary of the manufacturer) is not more than 5,000 motor vehicles each year. The company can sell up to 325 replica vehicles in the U.S. each year, with no limit on the number of incomplete kit cars that can be sold. A replica vehicle is a vehicle that resembles the body of another motor vehicle produced at least 25 years ago (’32 Roadster, ’65 Cobra, etc.).

That is a cool, little car. Those things always looked great, and it's lovely to see such a good looking replica. I'd love to cruise around in that thing all day. The Subaru 2.5L is a very nice engine, good power, reasonable weight, quite reliable, and pretty bulletproof. Some may jab at headgasket leaks, but that was an early model problem with cheap gaskets. Once they went to the metal gaskets, the problems don't exist. If you stick with the old MAP based setup, it's very simple electronically: MAP and air/fuel sensor is it for control, and cable throttle can be available. It doesn't get much more basic. Plus the Subaru ECUs are open source tunable using free software, both NA and turbo applications, making the platform highly attractive for aftermarket applications.

As a 'restomod' fan and a Subaru fan, this video resonates with me! For sure I am one of those 'Philistines' who went for this car in its day because of the styling on the body and the dash. I loved the floor mounted gear shift. Everything was so 'clean' and so functional both inside and outside. For me, the body and interior are 'timeless' classics. Having a quality way to keep those aspects of the legend on the road is inspiring. I would try to find a way to 'restomod' this design to Subaru's full-time all wheel drive because I like the security of control that the setup would bring to having more weight in the rear. 'Real' Porsches had twitchy rears in the hands of us less gifted drivers.

I ran a Chesil Speedster in the UK for 10 years. It eventually ended up with a Suzuki Hayabusa motor in the back married to the original Beetle box. That meant 2 gearsticks! Select forward on the Beetle box then over to sequential..or the same in reverse! It was crazy. Stack instruments, Honda radiator, vented discs and coil over shocks. It went like the clappers and sounded awesome. Rev limiter set to 10.5k! The idea was to run it for a while to get the measure of it and then make the necessary improvements, which was going to include turbos. That'd given about 400 hp! But sadly, in the hands of a friend when we were at Le Mans in 2006, it bit the dust. We slid sideways on to a Citroen. Result not good. I spent 9 days in a coma and 63 days in hospital! lol! I should stress this wasn't the car's fault. It was driver error.

I agree it would be fun, but the complexity level would skyrocket. As he said, the 5spd takes significant work and imagine trying to get proper air flow to an intercooler and fit all the piping under the rear hood... I would just build out a nice 2.5 and be happy with 200hp wheel. You can build a 2.5 pretty easily to 200hp, many 2.5rs rally cars are 180-200hp. Add short gearing and it would be a blast! Use all the power all the time and not have the complexity and heat that a turbo will bring.

I cannot stop watching this one. I plan to order one next summer, after I pay off my 911. I always wanted 356, but the current cost and no a/C (friggin hot) keeps me from searching for one. This JPS version takes care of all my concerns, and makes it a no brainer, all for around $40k!!! Rather enjoy this as a daily, than an original master piece, I couldn't park anywhere (or leave it alone).

Jay - as you might already know, $800 for a car in 1967 is ~$6k in 2016 (adjusted for inflation). i think your brother was smart to buy one, and not so smart to sell it as you know what $6k gets you today!

Always loved those Speedster's! I guess, for the extra performance and the extra comfort, I'd settle for this, as opposed to the Original. It looks fantastic!

I would have to strongly disagree that the engineering has not been figured out with the flipped ring gear on the Subaru transmission. SubaruGears has this swap completely dialed in

...which begs the question...could this replica be done as an AWD car?

There was plenty of room in that engine bay for a turbo...

thejerg It's not just the space, it's the heat a turbo would make and trying to cool that without modifying the body for additional air intakes.

Ian Hobday Agreed, this car just needs a decently build 2.5. At 1700#, a 200whp engine would be VERY fun, a turbo ruins the experience, especially on a car that is so light and just does not need the extra power and complexity.

Jay needs a booster seat !!! A while ago I saw a car blowing up behind me - all sorts of spew and then I realized it was Jay in one of his steam Hoop-Dees making the steam and racket. Hilarious. Used to see him at Autobooks store here in Burbank/NoHo on weekends before the ownership (and vibe) changed.

Yeah of all the Subaru motors to use, WHY the EJ25D? The EJ251 SOHC motor was more plentiful, more reliable, and is easier to work on, and makes the same power.
@slowlearner9848 жыл бұрын
Had that motor is a buggy. You only blow head gaskets if you overheat it and cook the heads. Treated properly they will do half a million miles.

Marauder252 he said it's nice to have the weight up front. You have to have good balance, it's not all about having as little weight as possible

Marauder252 really. is that what you got from that. besides a place for his family to gather for an emergency you must have missed the part where it was said little extra front end weight doesn't hurt.

Porker is the word used by many referring to the overgrown VWs. But seemingly a very nice little Hot Rod, and the Scooby do in that state of tune is near bullet proof if serviced correctly. The VW transaxle though will be a bit suss!
