I think he's thinking of all the fingerprints and road dust on the black trim panels and the quilted bit inside the hood. They probably even wiped down the aluminum and chrome before they started filming and Leno was just still feeling nervous about it. I would be willing to bet that he wants to steam the guts and detail everything under the hood whenever he shows a car just because the guy seems so passionate about the collection and cars in general. Still, I think we all know they wouldn't be out of place at any car show. Hell, some of the stuff that putts down the road at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit some years is 75% rust and 25% grime

After all is said and done, I love this car. All of what Jay says hits home and my other favorite is Tim Allen's "COPO" Camaro. Balance, purpose, beauty, and reliable function are all key. Almost a dream experience would be to "be" in the garage and feel what guys in the day felt at the time. Growing up in the 70s, later had a '74 Z-28 with a bored 402 from a Chevelle SS and a Hurst 4-speed that had a mismatched flywheel and shook itself to pieces but it was fast and loud... I was young. Graduated to a couple of 5.0 Mustangs that were fast in the day. My favorite was a '91 Notchback for 11k off the floor. Went to Formula 350s and hopped them with SLP as the handling was and is still great with WS6. My '05 GTO was the most underrated, understated. At 400hp with the tricky 6 speed, it sounded awesome, had torque to spare, got great mileage on the highway, was comfortable, and reliable. A true sleeper. Jay, you are a true Vehicle Philosopher Supreme. My heroes have expanded beyond George Patton and Carroll Shelby to include you. My late Dad had a collection of Kodachrome slides from car shows from the 50s when the cars were only 20-30 years old. I cherish them. Preserving history guarantees the feeling never dies. To VHP!!! May you live long and happy.

I always loved the Monteverdi, from the first time I remember seeing one in Classic and Sportscar magazine, here in England, when I was a kid. I thought they looked fantastic, and with that big Chrysler lump up front, (I've always been a big fan of American muscle cars too), what's not to Love. Like Jay said, you were getting all the advantages of a big torque, big hp and reliable American V8, but with handling and comfort of a European GT. I also remember you could pick up a good usable example for £10-15K back then too. Oh, how times have changed. It's crazy to see the prices of a lot of these type of cars now, which, until a few years ago, were still accessable to the average person. It seems that a lot of Jay's cars were bought many years ago, and what an investment. I know his collection is purely about the love of machinery and driving/riding and not about profit, but I'd love to know how much it's worth now, compared to when purchased. His McLaren F1, and the Miura he got for free, although it had a seized engine, are just two examples, which are now worth an insane amount of money, compared, to say, a couple of decades ago.

Benito M Gómez Contrary to popular belief, it’s never been confirmed if that whole spat between Ferrari and Lamborghini happened. I dunno why it’s spread around like it’s confirmed truth. It’s a plausible story imo, but we don’t know what exactly happened, if anything at all. Lamborghini’s origins are murky. I’ve read that Bob Wallace, Lamborghini’s test driver, said it never happened, and that Lamborghini thought he could make money from this venture.

Yes I would like to see the SM as well. Super cool car. I've see some really cool four doors and convertible versions of it in an auto-show not so long ago. Really nice.

Really enjoying getting through all your posts. Your love and knowledge for these cars is very obvious. Maybe there isn't a Gordon Keeble in the US, but if you've never checked them out it's just the same ethos as this Monteverdi.

Who wouldn't like to see Harry Metcalf and Jay Leno visit each other's garage?
@johndavey724 жыл бұрын
Harry would graciously concede that Jay's collection is probably the best private collection in the world. But l think if you got Iain Tyrell to talk Lamborghini then l would give the advantage to Iain. But Jay is passionate and knowledgable about so much and it doesn't stop at cars.
@davidsinclair34674 жыл бұрын
It’s subjective. If your interests are bookmarked by 60s sports cars, 80s nostalgia and the latest press cars only, then Harry, Iain and a mere fraction of Jay’s fantastic productions will entertain and educate you; but for me Jay stands head and shoulders above all other YT enthusiasts because of the diversity and depth of his interest in all vehicles however new or old, however many wheels and however popular “in the day”. Keep up the great work all !

Many thanks, Jay. I remember seeing beautiful Monteverdi cars in the R&T and C&D as a kid, and thinking, wow, they look so cool, what are they? The funny thing is that I was lucky enough to see many of the well known super exotics of the day up close at dealerships in suburban Philadelphia. But I never saw a Monteverdi, and I always wished I had. It's really nice to see such a pristine example on the road. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say thank you for keeping the faith for all of us who remember the incredible cars of that era.

How to be a supercar builder in the 70's: get in an argument with Enzo Ferrari pointing out the flaws of his cars and build something great fueled by anger. Ask Ferruccio.

American Power Meets Italian Styling: DeTomaso Pantera (Jay has one of those too)
@lovethesmellofracefuelinth73744 жыл бұрын
Yeah they are most definitely pretty raw and in your face, whereas this is more of a refined touring roadster and bet it's awesome on the open highways. The 440 is a better more powerful motor than the 351, and is a gorgeous machine all around. They are both very different and is kind of hard to compare them, but what red-blooded American car guy wouldn't like the Pantera. Especially an American Italian like myself, and are both awesome machines in their own right

Profile possibly. Had a ‘63 FV II, and grill/headlight assembly totally different. Borrani wheels and Mopar 383/TorqueFlight also similar. Time frame matches too and was completely reliable with dead-silent high-speed motoring. Some described it as ‘high-powered bank vault on wheels’ not unjustifiably. No, zero, body roll and door closure with satisfying ‘click’ and Chrysler speed shop crate motor (stock).

Ya just gotta love Jay Leno’s regular gearhead guy next door demeanor in his videos. Would love to meet him someday and talk shop about his collection. And what better way to disconnect from the strife of 2020 for a little while than to binge on Jay’s Garage? I always learn something new with each episode. Thanks Jay Leno for sharing your passion and knowledge with the world.

Oooh, Grand Touring. Don't hear those words much any more, but in my youth . . . When do we leave Jay, on that grand tour? Like others I never heard of this vehicle. You've got a great eye for the hidden gems and your segments always please. Thank you, it means a lot that a guy with so much will share with us who don't, and with your down to earth, non-boasting style. In my opinion you're one of greatest guys that America ever produced. You are an American treasure. Thanks again.
