Let's not forget the bang for buck with LS engines. BMW S65 engines are pretty rare and even a used one will cost you at least 6k, plus you can't much more HP out of it over stock without heavy modifications (stroker and/or forced induction). Plus every time something goes wrong the bill will be huge. I'm all for V8s but TBH for this car I think they might as well just taken a stock 1M and modded the engine, they could have gotten more than 500hp out of it for a fraction of the cost (just turbos + downpipes + IC + remap and maybe injectors).

The regular 2008 135i (depending on options) is a great underrated performer, which makes it even better because it's not flashy/noticeable as other performance vehicles.. but to those in the know.. that "year one of the 1" is a high performance luxury vehicle, even better than the 1M in 2011, because it's stealth, has a sunroof, large BMW brake kit (which no one really mentions, better than the M3 of that year) and it's the first of its kind. Bmw didn't make a commemorative book for all the 2008's for nothing. The car originally as it is no matter what options it has captures the essence of what BMW intended all along: small car, powerful engine. It's a great car as it is.. and if you want to modify your N54.. go ahead.. it can easily handle it. Now as for the build in this video, great job! Wow is that thing nice! Attention to detail! I would still rather have a smooth boosting inline 6 N54 engine, original to the car, that's my opinion and preference.. The N54 engine and the 6 speed manual transmission are not as weak as it's made to think (as briefly described) in this video. @6:04

Jay is notorious with digging into what's happening in the modern "Hot Rod" scene. Although I know his heart is old school and I sure can't fault him for that he still is into the newer tech as well. His 1966 Toronado build alone is a testament to that even thought it's probably close to 20 years old now. They put a twin turbo rear wheel drive V8 drive train in that baby back then. Now the E9X (I have the E90 myself) series from 2007 to 2013 or so depending on the model used the N54 twin turbo set up and now many years later those cars are selling for a price almost anyone can afford. Then for under $2000 or so more you can pump them up to 500 crank HP and beyond if you spend more for up graded turbos and a few other things. It's the bargain of the car world and I don't think there's ever been anything you could get that kind of power for that kind of money before. Yes you MUST keep up with the maintenance and there are troubles to watch out for but nothing that is catastrophic to the drive train at all. Water pump gaskets, injectors coils and spark plugs are crucial but nothing like Rod Bearings or engine work. The Transmissions WILL hold all that power as will the diff. The Auto trans will safely hold upwards of 650hp with nothing but proper maintenance. The Manual (The fact that you can get these cars in a manual is just AWESOME!) will hold power to the moon almost LOL. Around the 900hp mark without any mods.

Oh c'mon! That sounds like open pipes to me. I'll bet that thing gets an exhaust system double swap every two years when it has to pass smog.
@Markle2k8 жыл бұрын
***** He said he's from the SF Bay Area. The cutoff for smog is 20 years for meeting a specification on tailpipe emissions. You still have to meet an inspection requirement at title change (ie. is it installed, functioning) for 1975 and newer. The exact requirements depend upon the county where you buy it/register it. It gets slightly more complex when the car was originally sold as new in a non CARB-compliant state, but if the car is older than 5 years, not complex at all. Just meet DOT requirements . When I bought my 1959 Sprite in the late 80s, I had to have the crankcase breather repaired (hook it up). Didn't cost much at all (minimum shop rate for 1/2 hour). The reinspection cost more. Wasn't worth having the seller pay for it. Many states nowhere near California follow CARB rules on emissions, BTW.

Victor Davila ask the teams if they would rather have an na motor or a turbo motor. regulations forced the turbo motor. the teams hate the turbo.
@smminco8 жыл бұрын
*Victor Davila* that isnt totally true. F1 uses forced induction because they're limited to 1.6L, not because a turbo will stomp NA on a racetrack. many performance cars are going to turbos, not because they're better for the track, but because you can get more with less, and they provide great fuel economy. generally speaking with road cars, i'd take a well set up NA car on the track over forced induction any day (viper ACR is a great example). that said, all 3 of my road cars have forced induction, so i'm not saying i'm against forced induction.

I bet for what he spent an ls swap would have cost a fraction of what he spent and tremec makes a gearbox that's as strong as anything on the market.

LS swaps are more more boring that watching paint dry.

Its funny if he kept the n54 engine with a single turbo setup that would destroy any Bmw v8.

I'm sure the owner knows that, but it's clear that outright power was not the aim of this build. The owner wanted a unique car that was an occasion when driven, the S65 V8 offers that with its sound and high redline and it's made more special with the fact that it's a Dinan stroker engine.

This is the 1M BMW should have made from the beginning, obviously this one is way more track oriented but, the V8 in this car is awesome... This is like a 1M GT3 RS.. incredible!

the stock 135I transmission would hold that power just fine. One of my project cars is 2010 135I making about 500 crank, NO Transmission problems at all!!

I was hoping they made a typo and meant the M1. But they didn't make the typo... :( I'd rather see the M1 than some jumped up econobox.

Too bad he never tracks it. Doesn't show up to any of the track days with the rest of the local SCCA. Not at laguna, not at sonoma, not thunder hill. never been on a track.

ive done a few track days and honestly i dont much care for them. Id rather drive a twisty road in the santa cruz mountains than worry about crashing at wall-guna seca

+roywhiteo5 So you're saying you'd rather drive dangerously and illegally on public roads than take a track car on to a track for which it was designed? Ridiculous
@roywhiteo58 жыл бұрын
who said anything about driving dangerously? you dont have to drive 10/10ths to have fun
@Wildeheart798 жыл бұрын
+roywhiteo5 Why would you own such a track focused car to lazily cruise around the back roads? Equally ridiculous
