I owned a 1985 CRX. Blue/Grey two toned. I bought it for $6000 in 1986 and my monthly payment was $112. I drove it through college and into my first couple years of marriage and sold it with 130k miles for $2300 in 1993. I went through three sets of tires, two exhausts, two clutches, and two timing belts. The car ALWAYS started in cold winters and NEVER let me down. I remember reading the articles on this car's build with a certain fondness. This video brought back a ton of memories.

Gas tank wired in by copper close hangars, Rear sway bar non existent, Semi passes you and you feel like you are drifting straight down the road, car leaning to the left but still driving straight. $2 in gas got me around 80 miles.

@@crisnmaryfam7344any car can be a pos if the person before you treated it like crap. Customers 2016 Chevy Sonic in my yard is a nearly perfect example. Theoretically it's less than 10 years old, fuel efficient, manual transmission.... Should be a good car. But it was beaten to death by tweakers. Smashed in the front, clutch burned up, creative stereo wiring that led to a lack of communication with the ecm....smells like an old gym bag. Yet my 92 Chevy pickup with similar mileage was kept in a garage for 25 years, never smoked in, perfect original paint, perfect running 350, immaculate inside and out.... because it was my grandfather's, and I was allowed to maintain it since 1998. I don't remember the story but it was in Sweden at a garage where my moms car was being worked on, red one, and holy moses did that thing go. I was a young teenager when I was in it, in like 90-91 I think, and it is one of the few cars that actually scared me. It takes quite a bit to scare me, I've been in actual rally cars driven hard and the Supra was like those but with extra hot sauce. Ah, the beauty of the FWD cradle design - whether it's in this, or a Twini, or Jay's SHOgun, or a Lotus...it makes the drivetrain so adaptable. Just cut a hole, insert the entire subframe, engine and all...then make up the little braces needed to attach them together. Replace steering rack with an adjustable bar...and you're basically done. Sorting the cooling is probably the biggest hurdle.

Red, White and Blue just like the original Miata. We freaked out and my friend put in order for one the next day. He wanted the Red, but took a Blue one because he would've had to wait longer. I would've bought one if I didn't already have a Rabbit GTI. I'm thinking people walk by it because it looks like another modded CRX. I think they would've appreciated a stock one without a body kit and custom paint or those hideous aftermarket wheels. Most people probably don't know the significance of this build or that it has two engines. BTW.. Isn't it amazing that they named the Civic after their CVCC technology? 😂

I read that article when it was first printed. Never imagined that car would reappear this many years later. Maybe 80s cars sucked but back then you could buy a clean muscle car from the late 60s and early 70s for cheap. Many people did…and then wrecked them.

I loved this car when C&D built it, but then I was a massive CRX fan back when they were new. It really was the Golden Age of car magazines.

So glad to see these little Hondas getting love and being saved, especially one so unique. Love that Jay knows so much about them and respects them for what they were. I own two right now. 1985 all original with 75k miles and a 1986 that has a K24 in it make it 220hp and 200ftlbs to the tires.

I owned a new 1985 Honda CRX 1.5 engine with 5 spd. manual. Very fun economical n reliable car. 6 months later, a 1985 1/2 black special edition CRX SI with fuel injection and power sunroof came out. What a screamer it was. I wish I bought this CRX SI BLACK SPECIAL edition, but the depreciation hit would have been too much.🤑 Does anyone remember Jackson Racing ?

My first Honda was a black fuel injected 1985 CRX Si. I bought it in '96 and did not know it was an '85 1/2 until a year ago. As for Jackson Racing, I remember reading an interview with Oscar Jackson in Sport Compact Car magazine in '98. He said the '88 CRX was the best year because of its rear suspension that was changed for the '89-'91 models. He had won several endurance races in his '88 CRX. My neighbor put a Jackson Racing supercharger on his Miata in '99-'00

Would loved to seen this CRX on your hoist. So completely functional. Other dual motor attempts have always seemed a work in endless progress to synchronize the dual control systems to function reliably. The noise was so stock sounding too given the differing pipe routings. Very functional for fun only, no room for groceries.😂

I had a 1990 CR-X, burghundy. Got it cheap because it was making a clicking sound when you would shift the transmission. Turns out the screw connecting the shifter lever was inside out and rubbing. Took it to a mechanic. Fixed it. He didn't even want to charge me. I did give him something for the work, and he became my mechanic ever since.

In 1987 I bought a blue/grey 1985 CRX that I drove throughout college. I later got a red 1986 CRX Si. The CRX was a surprisingly practical small car (I could cram all my worldly possessions in the hatch!) with great fuel economy that was sporty and tons of fun to drive. Owning that original CRX gave me a love of 2-seat sports cars. Today I own a few vintage Porsches (911, Boxster, 944) that I certainly could not afford in those days. I would love to take my old CRX for a drive again.
