He was really something wasn't he? When I was in high school, Van Halen played at almost every weekend backyard party that I went to, but they called themselves "Mammoth" back then. An old school friend of mine married Michael Anthony ( bass player), and they are still married. Eddie was great even then, but we had no clue what kind of superstar he would turn out to be! Rock In Peace Eddie!

It's cool that you picked up on his signature guitar tone right off the bat. He was famous for tweaking his equipment to make different tones and he even invented and holds patents on a handful of guitar related items. He was a guitar genius in every possible sense and of course his talent was off the charts.

The greatest musician ever put on this earth. So innovated and talented that influenced every musician of late 70’s and 80’s and beyond. Didn’t mater what instrument they played. Eddie influenced everyone. Wow what a loss. He was a musical genius that only comes around once every century. So many great times in my youth listening to the music he made. Thanks for everything king Edward we sure miss you. RIP man. You’ll never be forgotten.

Jay Rah I love how you are so versatile when it comes to music. I'm a 53 y/o guy and I like a lot of genres of music and it's so refreshing to see others like me. Like you said... the guitar was not an instrument in this video, it was an extension of Eddie. To him, the guitar was like his right arm and he never learned how to read music. He taught himself how to play it. Keep rockin brother!

Glad to see you back Jay!!! Live Without A Net was the tour in which Sammy Hagar would walk the catwalk above the crowd on the floor without any safety devices...or a net. The concert video was shot in San Diego and I was there...on the first night. Those tapes were stolen so they used the footage from the second night. This particular video was recorded in Massachusetts. I have always admired EVH as one of THE most creative and inventive guitarists I have ever heard. Using a Makita to play? Plugging into a Hammond organ to use as an amp?? Quite the unique guitarist indeed, he will always be in my top 5 ever. I am really glad he and brother Alex switched instruments when they were kids, both excel greatly at their craft and we are lucky to have lived during this time. So breakdown: Most of this is just Eddie into his Marshall amps. Front half when he's playing "Eruption", only effect is a MXR Phase 90 with a really slow rate setting. 10:30 he uses reverb and manipulating his guitar's volume knob to make it sound like a violin. 11:55 is the intro to "Mean Street", which was Eddie attempting to incorporate slap bass he'd heard from funk players into his sound (he may have a Boss Octave for those parts, but I forget for sure). Underrated thing about Eddie's guitars is that most of the Floyd Rose tremolos were recessed, meaning they were installed a bit deeper and more secure into the body, which allowed him to pitch bend an octave up as well as an octave down.
@Briansgate4 жыл бұрын
adding in the info that also on that Cathedral part at 10:30, there is also a delay pedal. That's what is making it echo itself.

There is rock guitar before Eddie Van Halen, and there is rock guitar after Eddie Van Halen, period. He will be remembered as an American musical titan along with Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Jaco Pastorius, and others who revolutionized their instruments - and that's just as a player. He is also the first guitarist to cross-breed a Fender and a Gibson by installing a humbucking pickup in a Strat - he wanted the neck feel and and tremolo/"whammy" bridge of a Strat, but with that creamy double-coil pickup sound of a Gibson, and he chopped up a bunch of guitars to get there through pure trial and error. No training as a luthier or electrician - just a broke kid in his garage chasing a sound he heard in his head. The same way we know for sure that you can trace the history of hip hop turntablism directly to Kool Herc in 1970s New York, you can trace much of modern electric guitar design back to 18-year-old Ed sitting in his parents' garage in Pasadena surrounded by a pile of busted guitars, scratching his head. If you take apart a brand new electric guitar and see that the pickups have been sealed in wax, that's a technique invented by Eddie to control microphonic feedback - first done with a Yuban coffee can full of paraffin wax on a hot plate, dipping pickups in with a coathanger, and trying to yank them out just before the plastic pickup cover started to melt. This man not only changed the way the guitar was played, he literally changed the way guitars and amps were built. For a fascinating look into this history, as well as his American experience as an immigrant, you've got to check out the deep dive that the Smithsonian did with him in 2015. Set aside an hour for this, you won't regret it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5OVZ3dul6eNeJo

He wasn't an American ... he was born in the Netherlands !! My country !! 😉
@chrisw6473 жыл бұрын
@@richardtsandee8603 He "wasn't an American?" What a dumb thing to say. He might have been born in your country and had 50% Dutch ethnicity, but was half Dutch AND half Indonesian. He moved to the USA when he was 7, became a naturalized U.S. citizen with the rest of his family, and lived the rest of his life here, giving up classical piano to play rock, inspired by the rock songs he heard on American radio in Pasadena California. He spoke English with no foreign accent whatsoever. If you went up to him and told him he wasn't an American, he'd have likely been insulted. I have Italian, German, and Irish ancestry but I'm still an American. You can claim half his enthnicity & even his birthplace but he lived The American Dream and says so in the Smithsonian interview. I suppose this will be like Kitty Hawk North Carolina and Dayton Ohio arguing which has.the right to claim The Wright Bros. first powered airplane flight...was it the place where it was invented and put together or the place where it first flew? By the way, there is no "American enthnicity." All American ethnicities came from elsewhere, including "Native Americans" who crossed the Bering Strait 1000s of years ago. Eddie was no different in that respect than any other American since people started coming here. He decided early what he wanted to do, dedicated his life to it and became very successful at it, and he did it here, in the USA 🇺🇸

Back when traveling circuses were common, one of the big acts was the trapeze artists. You know, the swings up in the peak of the tent, people doing tricks, jumping swing to swing like 50 ft up. When the ringmaster announced the trapeze artists he would say "Here tonight, live without a net, is the" whatever family. Trapeze artists when practicing or not that good, had a big net to catch them so it wasn't as dangerous.
