Mortal Kombat 1 STILL Has An XP Problem in Season 2
I really hoped I did not make a video like this AGAIN but with Season 2 of Invasion here, we are still having big issues with XP gains. I am not a competitive player so maybe you can get good XP gains in Kombat League, but that's not for me. Last season, XP was the same no matter where in the Mesa's you fought. So if you were Invasion level 30 fighting level 1 enemies, you got the same XP as fighting level 30. This made it a little quicker to get XP towards Mastery so we could unlock all the items for each character.
In Season 2, XP scales to your level and the higher your Season level, the less XP you get against lower level areas. I maxed out my Seasonal level fast at the Wu Shi Academy buying the Dragon Bone and Dragon Horn and it was a complete waste of time, because now I am getting next to no XP from the Invasion mesas.
Whatever, the best XP this season is in towers, especially once you get the Seasonal Tower to level 30 and above. This is the play this season.
They HAVE to do better though. There is just no reason to prevent people from unlocking all of their mastery items.
In this video I show what I BELIEVE is the best path to get XP this season. If you have anything that is working better for you, let me know in the comments. I just want to do my part in helping this game be better and more enjoyable.

Thanks for making this video Jay, I’m the one who messaged you on Twitter about the progressive tower. One thing I didn’t mention is that currency gains also scale like the xp does, so you’ll also be earning more seasonal credits and koins from higher levels of the tower. I think the way xp is handled this season is a step in the right direction, but it’s definitely still an issue. On the bright side, the progressive tower is far more engaging and rewarding than last season’s strategy, but it takes a couple hours to get to that point. I kinda miss the character platforms from MK11, which were also a bit of a grind but felt way more natural and rewarding.

I have it up to level 21 and I see the XP is going up but still not nearly as good as just going to the level “Wrong Way” in the final Mesa so I have been splitting my time between them since last night when I started the progressive tower. Using the Windbreaker Talisman has helped make the towers leveling go quickly at least. Who would have thought the MK fighters weakness is being farted on?

@@nellyp2622 I would argue it’s worth it at any level above 30, but it becomes increasingly more more valuable the higher level. The XP gain increases exponentially, which can lead to ludicrous amounts of XP at higher levels. A great strategy is using a relic that lets you win on time outs, put all your points into health, and just jump around. If you time it right, you can even land a final hit when the time stops to get a brutality.

They're holding us back in hopes that we'll keep playing the game and trying to level our masteries. They know the game is extremely shallow with tons of players dropping out all the time so they're trying to keep players engaged as much as possible. I'm sure this will make even more people drop out though.

Exactly. But beyond that, they also want people wasting money on premium store items. If we could level up at a reasonable pace we could get dragon krystals and get the goodies. Instead they'll make xp gain a slog and try to fish more money out of people for this garbage beta game.

I actually don't agree with either of you that it is done as a means to keep people playing or that it will inspire people to spend actual money. The online pvp element is what will carry the game long term. I feel like people like me that play purely single player are in the minority.

Just play through invasions to get the skins and gear, then do the seasonal tower to grind xp for your characters. Find a talisman (I use the legendary Bloodmoon, but many use the Windbreaker or War Horn) that gives you the advantage. Once you feel like you pushed your luck in leveling up the tower (I stopped at level 43), quit on the last fight so the tower doesn't go up any more, and start over. At 43 where I am, I get almost 1600 xp for the win and over 1200 for a brutality. Over the course of the nine fights, you will go up at least two or three levels even when you hit the thirties! Also. You gain a ton of Koins and seasonal kredits. I bought everything in the seasonal store and have a half million to spare! Use it while you can though - they may patch this soon too!

100% agree! As an extremely casual player my only goal is to level up my characters and unlock the seasonal rewards. I went through the entire invasion from lvl 1 Omni Man and lvl 12 Sektor. I finished all of the mesa's and the boss sections and Omni Man is lvl 22 and Sektor is lvl 14. I was hoping that this season I'd be able to level at least 1 character through the season unlike like the last where I ended up upper cutting for an hour but that didn't happen. If NRS stopped worrying about players continuing to play and instead made the time that they do play more rewarding it would definitely keep the causal crowd happier. I'll probably end up grinding the gateway tower to 40 and level a character or 2 to max and maybe a kameo but after that I'll just wait till season 3 and start over again, the replayability is almost impossible, I just find myself constantly saying how many more seasonal koins do I need to finish the shop.

In one of Kollector's shops you can buy a "war horn" talisman that is "common" level so you're able to upgrade it for multiple uses and multiple charges, which lets you spam it the entire seasonal gateway tower. You can also upgrade the damage level. This is the best way to level up. You've got to do it this season because they're probably going to nerf it the next.

I really wish more of these main KZbinrs would address this issue. So that gets enough attention but they are too busy making KL videos for content and dry humoing Omni-Man instead of backing the community on issues we all want fixed so I really appreciate this video and like you I wanna unlock everything and I wanna play invasions and have fun in theory it’s a great concept but it needs some polish and they did make some good strides this season especially in the survive stages.

For anyone curious, I’ve calculated the xp scaling for fights above your level and it’s equal to (3x^2 + 60x + y), with x being the difference in level and y being base amount. That exponential component can lead to ludicrous amounts of xp the more and more you progress the seasonal tower

Another issue is the seasonal koin shortage. Ive 100% every mesa and im roughly half way through the seasonal store, if im even that far. Its kinda ridiculous to me, ive done everything there is to do in invasions and the only way I can get the rest of the seasonal skins is to grind towers on the gateway mesa. I think if you 100% Invasions you should atleast be able to buy 80-90% of the seasonal skins, then i wouldn't mind occasionally hoping on to do the timed towers, but to spend hours a day for weeks grinding timed towers sounds miserable to me, i dont even know if I want to put in the time just to get the mostly lame seasonal skins, but unfortunately im a "collector" and i want to get every skin lol.

It’s the life of the game. Once that character is maxed out, it’s over. They probably worry about people moving on and playing a different game, so they’re going to string her along the mastery levels as long as possible.

It's still a boring grind until you reach level 40, after that you start getting large amounts of XP from the seasonal tower, even without a flawless victory. I recommend dumping your stats into attack and bringing the legendary windbreaker talisman and fart on your opponent and low punch them, to kill them quickly. I've currently got the tower at level 56 and the XP rewards are massive.

If I’m playing with my main, it forces stat points on me that I do not want. I want a competitive fight, I do not want to be invincible. Having too much health ruins the experience all together. Buying the white core will only reset the extra stats, not the base ones that the game forces on you. Why is it so hard to let us control all the stats that our main character is receiving? If I want to set my stat points really low to make the fight competitive I should be able to.

7:35 My main goal of the game is to get the gear too, I loved the multiverse in I2 because the rewards, menu and modifiers were slicker and more fun. Also, they put the character intros in so I get to see them talk, I have 120 hours into mk1 and I may have seen a character talking start less than 10 times because I only play single player. I have no idea why all these character lines and animations are locked to a certain select screen or online only.

the thing that i hate about stats in invasion is that they will always be drastically worse than the opponent, dumping everything into attack still makes you do barely anything against titan fights and those getting to have infinity super armor so you just can't make them flinch ever is extremely anti fun

Hi just wanted to share my results i have been leveling the seasonal tower for a little bit and it's a pain in the ass until you reach lvl 29. From there it scales hard. Even if i don't always get a brutality and a flawless win i get alot of xp. I noted this after lvl 30 tower and each level after that. Right now my tower us lvl 44 and i get after every fight and if everything works according to plan. 2214 profile exp, 5313 character exp and 1438 Kameo exp.

I'm at tower lvl 77 or 78 and i get 9,747xp just for winning. + about half for a fatality, almost double for a brutality. Flawless is beautiful

I bought the game on Friday and I been struggling to lvl up scorpion to get his mastery and I feel burnt out all ready I'm only lvl 23 and it so difficult to get xp I'm honestly feel like giving up with the game it such a shame aswell

The scaling is insane and so anti-player, it's wild. There is a way to I guess "cheat" it because clearly they are so behind on content and want us to slow down. The solution is to spam in the seasonal tower with a custom talisman. From the Kollector shops, get the common warhorn or windbreaker and then upgrade it only with the items that increase damage, recharges, refills. If you get the war horn at +300% damage, you just need to use it once (along with the recharge) you can use it through the whole tower and level everyone up. I'm at level 70 of the seasonal tower and by the end of the tower, no flawlesses and no brutalities, you go from character mastery lv 1 to 20. It's really not that time consuming besides the limits of buying the Kollector upgrades. I'm just leveling up everyone before they change the methods again.

There is a wonderful xp exploit in the living forest. We've Been Waiting is an endurance node and gives out waaay more xp than the other endurance nodes in season 1. :)

the mastery XP shit is really awful, it shouldn't take like 5 years of just fighting the same ai repeatedly to get all the character colors and brutalities. not letting you unlock the fatality 2 code by just doing it in a match is dumb too

I'm on seasonal tower level 86. With a fresh character & a forged War Horn talisman, a single flawless win with a brutality takes you from level 0 to 12! I'm now able to max each character within a single towers 10 matches. Crazy!

They fixed the exploit but not the reason people felt they had to do the exploit to begin with. It’s cool that they have a way to earn cosmetics for free but it’s counterproductive to make it extremely hard and time consuming to earn them. Like I’m an adult and I don’t have that much free time to begin with, and I certainly won’t use all of it just to play this one game. Why can’t some developers not respect the time of their consumers?

Thank you. This needed to be addressed. A drip feed looks like a gusher compared to this. It makes no sense why they do this other than to stretch out the thin game. By severely reducing how much XP you get for Masteries has got to increase player engagement and time spent in the game - and I bet those metrics are all monitored which can then be sold to advertisers like, "Look how much our players are constantly playing." -- I'd be willing to bet that may have been the mind set behind the AI battles in MK11

Why isn't invasion worth your time tho? You said you want to unlock all the stuff and there are a lot of stuff unlocked by the invasion boss nodes and chests later. I understand you won't get enough exp for it but you still unlock stuff you won't otherwise since they aren't in the seasonal shop or the shrine.

Just do the tower in invasions that keeps leveling up every time you beat it. Get to around level 56 and you will take in the EXP and level up super fast. Just don’t finish the final fight so the tower stops scaling, making it harder on yourselves.

Build up that seasonal tower.I ran Scorpion from level 15 to level 30 in about an hour and half today. And I only have my tower at level 43 - I've read other people having their tower run up to 100 and being able to max out Tremor in just three or four fights!

@@k1ngblackb0ii2 Let me know how you make out. I use the legendary Bloodmoon talisman to win the fights - it drops like 60 meteors on the opponent’s head - you just stand back and watch. I heard the Windbreaker works well too but I found that they didn’t stay in the cloud long enough and I was actually having to fight too much. The ultimate no challenge win, and how people are running their tower up to 100, is by building a War Horn talisman with extra damage, projectiles, charges, recharges. Basically you make a seriously OP talisman, click the button, and watch it kill your opponent in seconds, then collect your XP!

Guess I just max attack stats on OMNI and grind until I reach a decent lvl on seasonal towers. Then just get peeps up to perhaps 14 for 2nd fatality? Ugh … wish this was DLC to MK11 really. Might as well bring back the AI support for this like all the others.

For picking up the dragon horn (which only takes 3 to 4 purchases of that to max your invasion level) without the timer, just leave invasions and rejoin. There is nothing holding that in memory for the servers, so it'll automatically refresh. They may change that, but it's how it currently works.

It seems like the only way to level up is to play the Kombat League. As a person who rarely plays fighting games and hasn’t played a NRS game since MKX it sucks. I want to be able to play the game and not have to fight online just to get the same XP. I shouldn’t have to do a whole boring gimmick in invasions just to gain a xp that people get in KL.

I reached about level 42 in the progressive towers, and if you win the match, it’s roughly 1400 on completion another 1400 for a flawless and 1300. If you manage to get a brutality half that for fatalities, which is more common. I have a relic that says any damage I take goes to my super meter instead which is scaled by your defensive stats then I proceed to time them out with over 10,000 HP Omni man My stat points have Max HP only with the occasional extra point or two from ambush encounters

If I remember right level 41 has energy beams, so save the tower consumable that ignores all projectiles for that one Meteors are close second I stopped getting skins after the low 30s

Invasions grind to unlock skins is boring. The MK11 tower ystem was way better. Lets hope they make invasions shorter, more engaging, and better balanced in XP gain. Also remove the XP gain consumables, what a bait to waste peoples time. Just make sure people are getting enough invasions level as they go so that is not needed, and add powerful unlocks to help the less skilled players (which I guess is the reason for those xp boosts to exist)

I hit level 70 just from replaying invasions due to boredom and my XP isn’t moving at all for any character when I’m in towers. It’s hard just to grind to get the XP up. I haven’t even hit mastery with any character yet.

I'm on level 70-odd now and the exp is insane, I get 3/4 of lvl 34 to 35 in one fight. The habits I'm learning are definitely terrible, level 64 is an outright puzzle (the blood tornados that fill the opponents health are ridiculous) and brutalities are becoming illogical. I've mastered the top row +3 kameos and I think 8 roster. Could've done more but you have to start having fun somewhere.

Purchase the War Horn talisman from the Kollector in the Rampart Mesa (specifically the Kollector up on the battlements). The talisman at it's base is meh so purchase forge items that increase: - damage - number of uses - attack frequency - recharge Then when the match starts flick the right stick and sit back while it does the work for you. Kameo Kung Lao's 2nd brutality when timed right is the best to use

seasonal tower on level 35-40 gives 1000-1200 xp, level 45-50 1500-3000 xp alone just put in the work to get the reward

Challenge tower is by far the best way. Just keep playing it and when you get to level 34, you start getting ridiculous xp. Keep doing Brutalities and use the windbreaker talisman.

Saying Invasions is pointless because you cant spam easy fights is silly. Within Invasion there are skins and gear that you can earn. Just be ause they stopped one form of spamming xp doesnt mean they dont want you to gain xp, it means they want you to actually earn it. Like you said, it actually made you a worse player doing that! Now, i agree that with so many characters and having so much locked behind a mastery wall really sucks and i dont know the solution, but thye want people earning what they get and feeling rewarded for dong so. Me - I'm spamming a level 43 tower and getting mastery with every character before they "fix" it again!

I have been playing MK since the first arcade machine came out. I despise the concept of leveling and feel it has zero place in fighting games. When they did it in INjustice 2 I was angry about it and hoped they wouldn’t carry that over and force me to “level” Sonya. Once you have a “level cap” the next thing you know they raise it for the ultimate edition to make you grind even more. Fighting games are for punching people across the arena not grinding.

I understand where you are coming from and there is definitely validity to what you are saying. With that said, for people like me, leveling my characters gives me a sense of purpose since I know I am never going to be good enough to be successful online and I don't want that stress in my life lol. That's why I am advocating for making all this shit easier. I don't think they will lose anyone they weren't going to lose anyway if they unlock everything. I agree with you completely that the game pushes forward with people like you that just want to punch people.

What talisman did you use for that high damage ?

So invasion is only for 30days? I thought it was 6 weeks. Leveling up to 35 is jus to long

I just did the seasonal tower using the war horn talisman got the damage to just over 600% and went to level 71 on tower even without brutally or flawless exp is almost always half

I leveled all the characters I really liked all the way up to their second fatalities thank god. I did the whole second season of invasion with Omni Man, and still had to do more to get him to 20

No please don't waste your time trying to get those herbs or boosters. All you keep from a season are koins for the shrine. Everything else...herbs,boosters,talismans,relics,invasion level gets taken from you. I wasted so many days last season to collect boosters and herbs and it's all gone. And you are absolutely wrong. NRS does not care and they don't love their players...What they love is our money. That is all they care about. And the Progression Tower gets really difficult around level 45....I made it to 48 and i cant' beat it further. But please don't waste your time on things you can not keep.

Game Design wise ( especially Free 2 Play) its to increase player retention/longevity. Is it fun for the content we are getting, nope... not at all

SF6 has been out almost 6 months ago and has way more players than MK1. Making the mastery grind slower is one of the only ways they can think of maintaining the few players they have

All good points, but nothing was mentioned about the company maximizing profits, which is the whole point of the non-sensical migraine grind in MK1. We have seen the "maximizing profit" plan grow in MK11 and I'm sad to report, for those who haven't figured it out yet, will be the norm going forward. MK1(2) got hit and we can expect the same for MK1(3) (if there is one). There really is no point to play the company's game to maximize their profits because like MK11 all the goodies in MK1 will be automated when consumers stop spending their money on MK1 or if the company gets bored of updating MK1. It's best to just pay for the base game and wait for DLC to sell for dirt cheap or just wait for everything to sell for dirt cheap if you have impulse control. Regardless of the consumers happiness or sadness the company will always base their decisions on the sales numbers. So, if consumers don't pay, then there will be no game or DLC. Case in point, it's a lose lose situation for consumers either way. If none of this matter to you, then by all means, keep being happy with what you paid for.

Levelling up the seasonal tower, even “afk” feels like a grind in itself, and that’s before it gets good

It makes me grateful that I went through and got everyone to Mastery level 20 before the season ended in my spare time. Kitana and Mileena were the only level 35s I completed. It's real demoralizing knowing they acknowledged the complaints and took this away from us.

I understand all of your efforts here but unfortunately MK1 does not deserve to get grinding too much.. Every idea in this game including whole invasion single player content, mastering characters online modes everything except the story is so wrong and felt like huge downgraded when it's compared with previous tittles. I just hope this year Street Fighter 6 gets best fighting game award which deserves so much than this half experience game and NRS takes some lessons from this. ( Which i don't really believe, they mute even comments on KZbin or twitch streams..

Well I think they nerfed the quick xp because they want everyone to be at the same level and for you to have to grind through the game to unlock skins is more rewarding that way plus they want you to spend more time in the game so that you don't jump to other games and possible spend money there 😂

They did this because of last season with the xp you get from endurance mode so they nerf it this season so now you when your a high invasion lvl you get less unless you fight a higher lvl invasion 😂

Leveling up is actually super easy with this seasons challenge tower as others have said. I have the challenge tower to level 53 and basically gain a whole level per fight. I managed to get everyone’s dragon Krystal’s in a few hours.

I did the same I did in first invasions and put all my points to attack on my character once I got towards the end of Shang Tsungs laboratory and after that every match my health would drain really fast on every match so 0 chance of flawless victory and the xp gains were a joke

I hate that online u get little to none XP even if u lose but win one round. I the kind of player that wants to learn all characters but it will take so long to level them up

I only play mk1 invasions for the xp exploits otherwise I wouldn’t touch it

Worst mk ever!!! I pre order it i was so exited and after i finished the story mode and invasion season 1 i was bored i wanted to practice all the characters but with all the bugs and low of content im not even playing it and now with season 2 i wanted to pick up the game again but this slow pace xp im done with im happy spider man 2 is great and im only at 35 % of it so mk can stay s... my D.
